GameStop: "the flood gates are open for PS4 system reserves"

I went to my EB/Gamestop today to preorder the PS4. The rep told me I was #73. He thought this would be chaotic and that Sony had promised that they would deliver the amount of consoles needed. He also mentioned that they had already started production and should be ready to launch as early as September.

I have never purchased a PS console at launch, my only concern is hardware malfunctioning. Their track record is that their 2nd revision is much more reliable and even sleeker/practical in design.

All console track records are like that.

As I posted earlier:

Actually it might sound strange but I expected them to do it all along.
They "allowed" Xbox to announce first, caught them by surprise. We all know the PR disaster which may not have been caused by it but there was panic by MS and it showed.
They "allow" MS to launch first (MS=fall vs Sony=holidays). Maybe they will hit the stores early October.
Maybe not but it might be one of the last moves on this well played game of chess of Sony vs MS. The previous situation was Sony had a check on MS, MS pulled a castling.
Will Sony's next move be a checkmate?

Can't execute a castling when checked in the real chess game, not allowed, IRL you can

Well my launch 60gb and my fat 80gb are still both going strong, but I also take extremely good care of it though. Of course hardware malfunctioning is possible, but it's not like there was some systemic issue with the console. Get an extended warranty if you are feeling insecure.

Your team did the costing for it, there's nothing in it that is complicated to produce right? 28nm is mature, TSMC typically achieve 80% yields on the process. GDDR5 chips of the correct density might be the only impediment?

If that's the case I don't see any problems with them aiming for stellar numbers out of the gate....or am I missing something?

Yes, in product terms I think 5-7m would be a regular sized launch of a big product. It could be done. In console terms, no one has ever done it because of the tech that is normally involved. MS launched with an almost experimental GPU in the 360, Sony did launch with an experimental CPU in the PS3. Before that PS2 needed a lot of specialist manufacturing capability, EE+GS was actually made in house at Sony and required Sony's semiconductor's business to invest a shit load to get production up to speed, and back then Sony never really outsourced so the shortages lasted for almost a year while capacity was brought online.

Now with TSMC making the APU, Hynix and Samsung making the GDDR5 RAM and Toshiba making the HDDs and Blu-ray drives, the PS4 is the first real outsourced console, which means they can place big parts orders and let the suppliers worry about delivering.

There is some word now that GS may be closing down PS4 pre-orders with XB1 pre-orders.

IS this true?

No, confirmed no by my manager friends at FS. I'm tight w them because we used to work together. No communication received stating this(for ps4), at least. They did not mention the XB1, but I assume the same

Couple quick questions on System Reserves, can I just go in and put 20 bucks down on a system like a game? Can I reserve a system by itself or do I have to get one of the game bundles?

In store at GS(don't know about other stores) you can do system by itself, but I think it's a hundred down. Not sure, I full paid mine, so.. Someone would need to confirm

Quick aside: It's ironic that Toshiba is the one making the BD drives now, considering that Toshiba was the proprietor and champion of HD DVD back in the day.

It's all just business, it's not like Sony and Toshiba are mortal enemies, they've worked together before the whole BD vs HD-DVD war, it's almost like warlords in feudal Japan.

The PS4 is nothing like the 360 or PS3 when it comes to ramping up production to launch. It has nothing like Xenos in it that was huge and ran hot for its day. It has nothing like cell and bluray drives are easy to make now. The assembly in china is extremely fast these days. They are going to have a few million of these things out in the market place this holiday season.

This is true. Foxconn has mastered industrial engineering, production ramping and the like to an unprecedented level in the industry. Shipping 30+ million units of a top-of-the-line cellphone in a quarter is no big deal these days. Samsung's S4 ramp target was 10 million units shipped per week.

It's all about business, in PS3 launch Sony and Toshiba were rivals with Blu-Ray vs HDDVD and partners in Cell's development,

Ugh, that is just brutal. Goddamn...

I know. I just mean it would've been really hard to imagine around 06-07. It's kind of like Sonic being on Nintendo consoles.

EDIT:

Wasn't there a rumor around then that suggested that Toshiba was considering constraining Cell supplies to Sony due to the format war? I don't think it ever came to pass--much like Samsung supplying iPhone parts for years.

Well Sony shut down Optiarc earlier this year IIRC, so Toshiba are one of the few companies left that make high quality BD drives.

how do you know? I preordered one on amazon too minutes after the conference but all mine says is before December 31st.

Do you have a launch edition PS4 or standard edition?

Yeah you should have a launch edition. I preordered mine like a week after their conference and they sent me an email saying it was upgraded to launch edition, and to change it to 2 day shipping to recieve it when it launches. This is off the US amazon website.

yeah, no doubt. also sounds like there is a possibility this will affect amazon preorders. if gamestop gets all the stock, what happens to the people (like me) that preordered the first day on amazon. if i have to wait because sony doesn't want to piss off gamestop, i will not be amused.

If you have a launch edition on Amazon you're probably safe.

Why are people pre-ordering after RROD and YLOD? By now people should know to wait and see what hardware problems crop up before buying. Besides, it's not like pre-ordering guarantees that you'll get one at launch.

That is a valid point.

Also, you think if I pre-ordered a bundle, I would be more likely to be guaranteed to get mine should their be a shortage? I also pre-ordered this morning so I think I should be well in the queue that I should be okay in either case.

That's what the warranty is for. And I have a launch edition, so yes I'll get one at launch.

YLOD was only between 3-7%. These boxes use less power. Xbone is cooling overkill and PS4 is vented to hell and back. Cooling in tight spaces has advanced a lot since 2005 thanks to 100W laptop GPUs. I'm not worried.

Can this be done with Consoles bought at Gamestop?

Did the warranty help early adopters of the 360 who got the RROD? Didn't Microsoft drag their feet on even acknowledging the problem?

The original 360's didn't cool properly not because of technology, but because of design and that could easily happen again.

So can we expect at least five million units by the end of the year, worldwide? I think Sony was aiming for 2 million PS3's between Japan and NA at launch.

Because it's 2013 and manufacturers know what they are doing with lead-free solder now.

The PS1 had hardware problems, remember having to turn the thing upside down? The PS2 had hardware problems, remember the DVD drive not playing games?

If I had told you in 2006 "Don't worry, Sony has learned to make Optical drives properly". Would it have saved you from a YLOD?

The XBOX had drive problems too and if I had told you in 2006 "Don't worry, Microsoft surely knows how to design hardware better now". Would that have saved you from RROD?

All I am saying is that after last gen, I would think people wouldn't be so quick to jump on first run hardware. It may not be overheating this time and it may not be faulty optical drives but it could be anything.

Anyway, I am done, do what you want with your money.

Understandable, though the 1st model PS3's held up pretty darn well, for the most part. These should hold up better, since the bulk of the parts are pretty darn conventional.

Yet despite all these things I honestly don't think gamers care lol.
RROD was massive on unproportionate scales yet MS did pretty well.

Watch dogs is a day 1 title isn't it? And Ubi have confirmed a date 19-22 Nov.

Hey, gamestop, you can sell all those units, if there is a shortage, we will just let Europe, Japan and Brazil without the PS4 for a few months. :(
