No I didn't realize any local circuit city was doing a midnight launch around here. Which one are you referring to?

EDIT: Oh shit just checked the website Rockville store..hmm thanks for the heads up. How early do you think folks will start camping there? I am tempted to swing by there after work... let's see I'd get there about 6.... vouchers handed out at 10... could go home catch a nap then come back at midnight....

Umm... don't you get the absurdity of this? This is a thread about them overestimating supply to begin with. Why would their estimate of "all preorders filled before Xmas" be any different?

That isn't even a question they can reasonably answer... it's completely out of their control.

I just called my GS. I was 8 of 12 when I pre-ordered, but now they say they're getting 16. Something tells me the employee I spoke to was stupid. I'll call back in a few hours to ask again...
 
manager will know how many units he's getting circa 3 today. i was fifth in line, and he thinks i'll get one. but an employee took one of the preorders, and i bet that bumps me to six. most hilariously botched product launch ever? possibly.

I just noticed it like 20 minutes ago so I guess it was pretty recent. I want to call my GS but I'm afraid of the answer I'm going to get.
 
I'm #10 at my local store, so I'm probably going to have to wait a few more weeks. It sucks, but it's hard to get too upset considering that all I'm missing out on is Resistance and Taladega Nights in HD. I'm not so hyped that I can't wait a few more weeks for that.

I don't know what Sony intends to spend on advertising leading up to Xmas, but it begs the question of whether advertising a product you're unable to sell is money well spent.

According to what I've heard, all GS/EB stores in the Cincinnati, OH area are set to receive exactly HALF of the promised units. F*cking half.

Oh god this news story apparently gets even funnier!

Gamestop/EB is now scrambling trying to figure out how this news item got out already, as it wasn't suppose to come out till LATE this evening. I just got a call back from my asst mgr because his district mgr wanted to know where the news item was posted for that reason.

A comedy of errors...
 
scenario 1- Sony gave GS an allocation number a while ago, they took preorders based on it, then Sony lowered their allocation, leaving GS customers screwed.

scenario 2- GS took preorders based on how many units they thought Sony was going to give them, therefore screwing their own customers.

Until we know which of the two possible scenarios happened, there's no way to tell whether this is a Sony or GS screwup.

Sure, Sony could delay the launch until next year and put 2 million units in the market at once. Or they could come to market now with 400k and get the rest in as fast as possible. This only hurts those people who are too jealous to stand the fact that maybe someone else has something and they don't. People need to quit being crybabies with the attitude of Hey, if I can't get one, why should anybody else be able to. Suck it up and maybe you'll get lucky, maybe not. Jeez...

Well, I had a pretty good idea this would happen anyways so Im not terribly excited, what I dont understand though is why EB allowed everyone to choose which system they would like?
I mean, what if each of the 16 people at EB preordered 60gig units and the store received 10 60gigs and 6 20gigs, looks like either way people were going to get screwed out of a launch unit, or atleast the one they wanted. Seems like pretty common sense to me but oh well. BestBuy or Walmart/SamsClub, here I come.
 
Called my GS back, talked to the same guy... he hadn't heard the news yet.

It's a good thing I have no plans to purchase any PS3 games until late 2007 and held off on Blu-Ray movie purchases until I watched TN on Blu-Ray and King Kong on HD for a comparison on my TV.

Still sucks to be missing out on day one though.

holy ****, same thing happened.
I talked to the person at my local ebgames just a minute ago on the phone. I told her about the gamespot news story and she sounded kinda mad, she was asking me all these questions like where did you hear it, what employee told you that we were getting 16 units in a month ago, telling me all this stuff about store policy that employees are not supposed to tell things like that. She was asking me wtf he looked like, and im no snitch so I told her I forgot (not trying to get somebody fired for telling me how much they initially were planning to get).

but shit im ****ing worried now. she said she would call the reserved customers within the next 1-2 hours to let them know.

By that accounting then, GameStop is getting 75% of their pre-orders filled.

Well, as I said, all stores around here are having their shipments cut by 50%. It seems to vary per area.
 
I think I'm going to make a stop at my store on the way home and see what the hell # I am and how f*cked I am.

I'd be willing to bet it's scenario 1. The 360 launch was such a PR nightmare for them, there is no way they'd just guesstimate PS3 launch numbers.

If they did just guess... wow. Just wow.

oh yeah it sure does suck missing out on day one considering all the games are inferior to their 360 counterparts and the only good game is resistance hahaha
 
I called my Gamestop and they said that as far as they know they should get their full allotment of 16 units. One thing I found weird is that they only had 8 preorders. I asked since I was number 4 if I should worry and he said that if something does happen he expects to get at least that amount.
