GameTrailers GOTY Awards 2015

These people have garbage taste when it comes to music. That's a fact. Undertale and Hotline Miami 2 not even nominated? AssCrud wins? CoD is in the running?

yo I don't care about COD music usually, but you can't go wrong with Jack Fuckin' Wall.

Well, they were one of the few with brains enough to include Heavensward. Literally blows my mind that because it's an MMO it doesn't receive many nominations.

Is the Assassin's Creed soundtrack really that good?

My personal favorite is Ori and the Blind Forest, followed sharply by Life is Strange. But from this list, Bloodborn was great from what I've heard and The Witcher is pretty awesome as well.

Worth checking out?

Ben Moore has GREAT taste

The old hunters deserved it if not for the weapons alone the bosses, new areas and lore implications just make it a treat to play. It was phenomenal from start to finish.

Just saw the latest awards. Really happy to see GT giving SC2 some more love! That's now best strategy and PC exclusive. Bit surprised Heavensward didn't take best expansion but good competition there.

I don't get how Assassin's Creed Syndicate won for best soundtrack, let alone was even nominated. There's not a single memorable piece of music in that game. Unity had a better soundtrack.

The Witcher 3 on the other hand, I don't know how you can deny.

These guys at Gametrailers can be safely put on ignore.

Sounds kind of like a situation where you'd win either way.

And it's almost refreshing to see backlash to Bloodborne winning something over Witcher 3
though I do root more for Bloodborne.

I'm not really upset haha, but I feel Hearts of Stone is one of the greatest expansions ever.

I don't really follow Gametrailers too much anymore apart from the stuff posted on GAF, but Bloodworth has great fucking taste.(except for Fallout) He didn't play it much though so I'll give him a pass on that dubious inclusion :p

Brad Ellis has a nice list too.

Most disappointing game had to be an easy pick. Even though you could see it coming, it was still a THPS title. It's shocking in just how bad it ended up being. The lowest rated game in that series before THPS5 was THPS4 at 94. THPS5? 32.

Always nice to see BB get recognition, but in a way I'm even happier that they threw so much love towards Legacy of the Void.

I'm going to be honest, I was a bit annoyed and disappointed by a few things in terms of how the awards were run.

Racing: I understand that these are time sinks but it's disappointing that this entire category got snubbed considering how many racing games were actually released. On the whole it was a mixed bag (NFS, Forza 6, Dirt Rally, Fast Racing Neo, Project Cars, F1, etc) but it's unfortunate that an excellent and much improved racing title like Forza 6 fell by the wayside as a result.

Best Soundtrack:
Ori and the Blind Forest and Halo 5 had excellent soundtracks and yet aren't even nominated. I know Daniel acknowledged the Ori thing but similar to Forza and the racing category it's a case of a well regarded game soundtrack being outright dumped for some vetting reason so I don't agree with that decision at all.

Best Expansion: Forza Horizon 2 had the Fast and the Furious and the Porsche expansion packs so it was certainly worth at least a nomination for this category. Hell even Drive Club had a lot of additional content but it seems like racing games never quite make the cut.

Best Microsoft Exclusive: I agree with the remake rule but the whole platform exclusive vs console exclusive argument is questionable since there are going to be a lot more console exclusives in the future from Microsoft and Sony.

I'm curious as to whether this category will be revised in the future but omitting Ori (and probably Screamride) on a technicality didn't sit well with me.

Best Platformer:
Mario is one of the all time great platformers but Mario Maker's more veered towards creation like Project Spark or LittleBigPlanet's level creators. Yoshi's Wooly World or Ori were outright pure platformers so I don't get why any of those won that particular category.

Purely opinion:

Best Trailer: Despite some disappointment with the final game the E3 2013 MGSV Red band trailer was an amazingly well put together. Good storytelling, great music, and most of all it gave me the "I NEED THIS GAME" resonance that Hideo Kojima's trailers tend to give me. The Final Fantasy 7 remake trailer was good but it was more of a well dressed fan service trailer, I would have understood if it was combined with the PSX footage but it wasn't. MGSV as an overall package showed gameplay, thematic content, and sold it's features all while teling it's own mini story.

The personal picks portion is all based on personal preference so I don't have any issues with their opinions on what they thought were the best games they've played. However similar to the Eurogamer GOTY thread it seems like the GT staff more widely uses PS4/PC, and Wii U as opposed to the Xbox One which explains oversight of some of the platform's games in these awards videos.

Yeah, it sucks, but I didn't have a chance to put more time into some of those games, and I'm not just going to pick a winner blindly just because we "have to" give an award. You have to remember that there are only 9 of us, only 4 of us that do reviews, and I'm the only one really playing racing games, and I'm also managing everything everyone else is doing. A lot of the games just came out at awful times for me too. Project Cars came out right when I got The Witcher. I tried to pull a review together, but then I had to plan E3. Dirt Rally I was expecting to tackle next year, and then Surprise! early access is over and the game is "done" now. Likewise, Fast Racing Neo came out right about the same time, and for both of them, my time was sunk into putting all the awards together.

This isn't any issue with how the awards are run, we just don't agree. I listened to a lot of music, and yes, I played Ori too. Love the Ori soundtrack, love its implementation, it just didn't make my top 5.

Best Expansion: Forza Horizon 2 had the Fast and the Furious and the Porsche expansion packs so it was certainly worth at least a nomination for this category. Hell even Drive Club had a lot of additional content but it seems like racing games never quite make the cut.
We had a massive pile of expansions that didn't make our top 5. I wouldn't put either of these above many of those.

Best Microsoft Exclusive: I agree with the remake rule but the whole platform exclusive vs console exclusive argument is questionable since there are going to be a lot more console exclusives in the future from Microsoft and Sony.

The PC is a competing platform. If it wasn't, we would at least see some late ports of Halo and Forza. Ori came out on the PC day one, several of us played it on PC. We have a PC Exclusive award too, and the same rules apply across all those categories.

Halo 5 got a lot of love. Ori had a lot of love even if you felt it should have had more nominations. And Rise of the Tomb Raider just wasn't as popular among our team as some others.

I can understand the issue of lack of manpower for the racing game of the year, it sucks but understandable. The other stuff basically comes down to opinion so I'll agree to disagree with the nominations.

The Xbox One exclusives category is still a little too strict for my liking though. Xbox has long been extending it's reach to PC so with Windows 10 being more integrated into the ecosystem and the 360 not getting much more new game support it's becoming more of an an extension of the console. I don't know if you guys are going to take any of this into consideration for the next awards show but Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, Ashen, Street Fighter 5, Firewatch, No Man's Sky and Fable Legends will all basically get disqualified from their consoles unless they're picked up for other nominations.

I can see disqualifying Ori due to it's release on Steam given that it's outside of the MS ecosystem but the last few awards shows for the Xbox category at least have had some disappointing omissions.

The reason the multiplatform award exists is to pick up those games that aren't exclusive. I realize it is a bit of a crowded pool to come out on top of, but so are some of the genres and categories like best multiplayer.

We'll of course adjust as we see fit. One thing we did with the cross-gen was change the categories from single consoles such as PS3 and PS4 Game to PlayStation Exclusive and Xbox Exclusive, combining the consoles under a single umbrella. And we used to not even limit platforms to exclusive games, so one game would sweep its genre, and then three platform awards if it was released on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

And you did the right thing.
It's so ridiculous when people consider "console exclusive" as anything more than desperate PR bullshit.

I play mostly on PC, so hearing something it's "console exclusive" to one platform is hilarious, like the PC is not a platform they're actively competing with, or something.

PC is in a sort-of competition place. Otherwise Ori would not be on PC, because that is fully funded by Microsoft so they deserve the credit to fund it.

I personally think platform awards are stupid but I agree with the end result. For whatever reason there may be if the game exists on that platform or bundle of platforms exclusively they should count for that and nothing else.

Well, the Tony Hawk series has been a joke for at least the last ten years. Tony Hawk Ride was an abomination, and all attempts to reinvigorate the series have been horrible.

Hotline Miami usually relies on licensed music, which should be at least be judged in a separate category (if at all).

And that shot at Assassin's Creed makes zero sense, since the series has had some amazing soundtracks in the past, and this one was done by Wintory, which won best soundtrack for Journey even on GAF.

Nah it sucks :p
