Seeing Kyle so hyped for Digimon during the stream and him yelling "digivolves to" every time was such a joy. Hope I can pick up the game in the next few days.

Ben's patented rants

He should have a show called Annoyed Gamer

Wonder if he can do a welsh accent well, might have to take up smoking too

Also, them watching Game of Thrones but not Vikings, is shameful.
Vikings is amazing, GoT has become mostly shit.

Truth. Vikings is consistently good, GoT has become boring for over half the season because nothing fucking happens.

Was that not a sincere post? I love that so much of GT is centered around actually enjoying games and general positivity, but it is nice to see someone who's actually invested in these things go on an articulate diatribe about how something is complete horseshit. There are definitely plenty of things out there worth getting angry about and going in on. Hell, the only other game-related video content I watch, Jim Sterling, is pretty much exclusively that.

great side bet, btw

Aw I didn't mean it like that man, sorry about that. I was just echoing the sentiment on how you gave another good speech that you always bring to GT Time. The Annoyed Gamer was just a silly reference of days long past.

Didn't mean to offend :/

Oh, no worries. Nothing to apologize for.

I think 'The Articulate Gamer' would be more appropriate. Ben's got the passion of Huber but with the analysis of Bosman. Best in the Business imo. GT MVP. Plus it seems like he discovered the fountain of swag in the past few months. Dude is looking sharp as a motherfucker.

Ben and his rants are usually nothing like Marcus Beer and his old show. Ben takes time to articulate his criticism and tries to make sure that you understand where he's coming from, whereas Beer's show was more like "this shit happened, it sucks, fuck you whoever is responsible for it! Fuck you and die!" With Ben you have this calm person who gets more and more frustrated the more he talks about an issue. It gets to me every time.

For sure, Marcus was always "out to get you" as well, which is different from something you'd hear on GT Time. It was always, "ooooh this scandal happened, can't wait to hear Marcus go after this guy/business."

Also, while we are on the subject. Back when Annoyed Gamer was still around, I looked forward to every episode. It wasn't until some time after starting that I realized Marcus was saying the same thing over and over, so I stopped watching. I think it being a weekly thing kind of hurt it for me because I was expecting the tirade, so it lessened it's impact. Stuff like that ought to feel almost unexpected.

- Bosman is bang on about Bioshock. He said in a previous TFB that it was "a game that made people feel smart when playing it". It's still true today. The game would've been better if you slowly found out that "Would you kindly..." was a brainwashing technique and you could begin to defy the game. He's right that the setting is wasted on Bioshock.

- Borderlands is the worst mainstream franchise. I fucking love how Brad is just telling Bosman off for liking Borderlands 2, like a disappointed parent, hahahaha.

- Brandon didn't really fight his corners that well. "If you didn't like Bioshock, don't play System Shock!" Also, it becomes quite clear that he likes his story fed to him and isn't a huge fan of ambient storytelling. He does have some fair critiques about Kingdom Hearts though, I still love it though.

- TLOU is amazing but it's overhyped. It is not the be all and end all.

The handshakes at the end were great.

Interestingly enough, that's kinda where I am with Jim Sterling. I still enjoy his Jimquisition every now and then, but it's not something I can watch and follow week by week.

I agree, I think the weekly formats really hurt both of them as yeah, there's bad things in gaming, but probably not enough to rant/whine every single week.

He makes good points every now and then but for the most part I see him as a self-righteous man-child and lob him in with Angry Joe. It's easy to be critical of big companies when they don't have a face.

Marcus Beer just came across as someone who was tired of the way the industry worked and was very nitpicky, it's the way I see Jeff Gerstmann going. I think Beer had a better understanding of the industry than Sterling or AJ.

To be honest, I just play Bioshock because it's fun and interesting to explore. I think the story is entertaining as well, I never really felt smart playing it. The Would you kindly twist didn't make me feel smart, I thought it was fun but there's nothing particularly intellectual about it, and I didn't even see it coming, so I don't quite get how I was supposed to feel smart there. These games are like fun rides at a theme park... Rapture was like a huge haunted house underwater, just a really cool setting to explore. The combination of guns and plasmids felt fresh (and still does today), and the story and atmosphere had good immersive qualities. I think Kyle is actually just a hater. We all do that sometimes... we see something we don't like for a variety of reasons and we imagine the people who like it are liking it for irrational reasons.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Fantastic countdown this week. Found myself agreeing with a lot as I never got into Bioshock as it felt too contrived and "I'VE GOT A BIG BONER" in Shadows of the Damned made me want to somehow stop Suda51 from ever making games again (and it looks like my secret mission has succeeded!).

And oh god do I love when Brad Ellis becomes Ragin' Ellis. Him schooling Bosman on why he should be ashamed to like Borderlands was amazing, especially after Bosman's insane Link to the Past hate.

Lmaooooo, "fountain of swag" got me. You right.

Bosman killing Super Metroid means he jumps Martin Shkreli to the position of 'worlds biggest heel'.

Potentitally unforgivable. Ever since they took Bosman's eyes, he's been a changed man.

was robbed.

I dunno if 2 white guys is enough to figure this one out though.... I think we need 4... yeah, 4 white guys trying to figure it out.

But even Until Dawn and Life is Strange are very limited? At least not so heavily different than Telltale or especially Heavy Rain. At least Until Dawn does a great dress-up, though.

I'm a little late with this reply but I've been busy.

Well yeah, they're limited too, designing a truly open game like that would probably be a nightmare and result in a super short game. But I think both games do a much, much better job of making both the small and big choices feel like they actually matter.

In Life is Strange, they do this by creating a more intimate and personal story, setting and cast of characters and give you the ability to rewind time to see both scenarios initially play out. So if they give you a choice, you can take a look at the different reactions and that makes you feel like you're making an impact on the story. And while the choice may only impact a relationship between two characters, the fact that it's a more personal story makes those changes seem important. Then when they give you a choice that actually seems really important, it's because it IS important and it has an impact on the story, not (Life is Strange spoilers)
j/k Kate dies anyway lol
.

In Until Dawn, on the other hand, they give you stats on the relationships between the characters and you can see them go up or down depending on your choices even in small conversations. Then during the game, different things can happen based on those stats. That also helps dress it up as you say, as it makes it seem like there's a lot more going on in the background than there actually is.

Compare that to Telltale's games where they love to say things like "so-and-so will remember this" but there's usually no noticeable change to future conversations, or worse, the character is dead 5 minutes later. Or when they give you what appears to be a BIG choice but then the exact same shit plays out regardless, often times almost exactly and other times, playing out the story but with a different character playing the exact same role, even though they're very different characters (Game of Thrones spoiler),
Royland/Duncan is the traitor!
. It sucks and I'm sick of their poor and formulaic game design, even in their good games.

Everyone should check out the latest episode of GT Live with Firewatch, it's a really great show. Made me want the game even more and it was just a fun episode to watch.

What if I think I've already seen too much of the game?

Was Elyse really that huge of a creative input for ManUps? The ending of the newest ManUps really got me thinking.
I think it was pretty equal. But I think she provided more structure that Ian would ever do on his own Which is fine. I'm loving the free and loose man ups version we have now. It needed to be different when she left.

The real question is when will they have Elyse on as a guest on GT Live?

I think the jokes were probably split pretty evenly between Elyse, Ian and Kyle.
What in that ending got you thinking about this?

The ending made me think about how much the show has changed and how little effort Ian (this is not a poor reflection on him, running a show is very difficult when doing it alone) seems to be putting into the show compared to when Elyse was there. The video, I think, was actually a direct response to that. Almost a lament to what the show used to be, if that makes sense.

Finally got around watching their top ten.

Of the games i played, i think they made good points, even Kyle with Bioshock.
Bioshock (including Infinite) always come off feeling so fucking full of itself, it's kind of funny.
And Kyle is absolutely right about both the "Would you kindly" and the Little Sisters, could you be more overtly, and cheaply manipulative than that? Just very crass shit.
I did enjoy the game overall, because of the cool world, though.

Also, Ian made some good points about Last of Us i think, i think it's a great game overall, but it's less clever than people give it credit for.
The game design is pretty straight forward and basic, and it gets around some common problems in not exactly elegant ways (chest high walls, companions being invisible, yellow highlights), plus the story has good moments, but it's got a lot of cheaply, and childish aspects to it, too, too many to ignore.
It also underlines more than Uncharted does, how gameplay and story can clash together.

I disagree with him that any story needs to be about player choice, and i disagree that it's an escort mission (it's not, BECAUSE your companions are invisible) and i found that LORE, Souls quip, unnecessary.
Last of Us has plenty of lore you discover through files and pieces of paper (not unlike Souls), it's just a more traditional and predictable lore (classic pandemic plotline) but it's there all the same.

Also, Brad against Borderlands 2, and Ben against Knack were clearly the highlight of the video.
That plane crash analogy was amazing.

the last of us is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) videogames i've played in my 30 years or so of doing this shit.

for me, its taken story telling in a video game to a new level. i found myself so invested in the characters. i wanted joel to live so badly when he got spiked. i wanted ellie to be safe and make it to the fireflys. i sat down to play half an hour and then joel got injured and you took over as ellie and she was fighting to save joel and i was fighting to save joel and then i was fighting to save ellie and i played the fucking shit out of the game for a few hours longer than i expected because i had to save them.

i loved how rewarding the story was, especially if you took the time to read the notes and letters. one bit in particular really added context and atmosphere to the world they created and was that sewer base. the letters explained how they found this place. and as you went on, it described what was happening, you saw the water catcher, you saw the nursery for kids, and then you see the bodies and how shit went crazy for them. i dunno, it really fucking added to the feeling of this world to see it and read about it as you went past it. 99% of the time it would have just been a forgettable tunnel with some enemies but it provided context for the bigger picture.

also, the pacing was incredible. one particular moment, after barely making it through the underground tunnel, which i inched my way through, holding my breath because of all the boomers and clickers, i felt like my heart was going to explode. then we get out and start heading up towards sunlight. and theres no enemies. and we are running. and ellie is shouting. and there is a fucking giraffe there. and it was amazing and carefree and unexpected. and i pet it. and it was exactly what my heart needed after the tunnel zombie fuckfest. and i just stood there for a few minutes on the roof watching the sunset over the city as giraffes roamed around eating on trees. and i was like, dudes,
we made it.

we fucking made it. and for that moment alone, i love tlou. i love it, i love it, i love it.

and now every narrative driven game i play will be compared to it.

The only reason TLOU gets praised so much is because the story is "good" for a video game. It's not amazing, mindblowing or otherwise interesting. It's the zombie apocalypse and shitty and fucked up things happen and it affects people, good or bad.

But because it's a video game and video game stories are usually garbage, it's suddenly the best story ever written by a human being. Like, come on, read a good book or watch a good movie. It's really not that special.

Unless, of course, it's "unfair" to compare video game stories with books and movies.

its not an unfair comparison but its surely a stupid one. books and movies are passive forms of media. i've never had my heart racing reading a book like i have playing a video game. and its because the player (theres your first clue) actually has to drive the narrative as opposed to a director of a movie or an author. thats the entire point. one is interactive. the other is passive. its actually really fucking hard to create and build a believable world AND then put into it the story and have it set out in such a way that the player discovers it and has ownership of it. its why some games get criticised for being 'on rails' or just QTE movies. no, the story of TLOU isn't entirely ground breaking (though i'd argue its not as heavy handed as you guys are making it out to be). but in the context of the medium, i dont feel anything has come close to delivering an experience within an interactive world that is as compelling, well paced, or discoverable, as naughty dog has with TLOU.

and i haven't even touched on the multiplayer which has no right being as good as it is.

That Kill Your Babies segment was disgraceful. DISGRACEFUL!

I though it was a great idea, but I wished they'd saved it for when there were more people there, Kyle and Ian got a bit too collaborative about it. Also using IGN's list was maybe a mistake as there was a lot there that they weren't invested in.

And maybe raise the stakes by having the goal be that the game that wins gets streamed the following week.
