But seriously, it is the best game of this year. Arguably, the best of any year.

Give it a rental over the holidays. After about 5 hours or so, you'll become.... one of us! One of us! One of us!
Pfft. Ok, I loved MGS but MGS2 might possibly be my least favorite game of this gen(either that or ICO). Based on that, will I enjoy MGS3? Blink once for yes, twice for no.

Also, I consider the whole eating thing horseshit gimmicry and nothing I've read changes that viewpoint. If the awesome gameplay is gonna be interrupted every 10 minutes for a 5 minute codec chatter or cutscene, then I will say that this game sucks. Also, if the plot is purposely dense and twisty for it's own sake, I will hate it.

So? Am I gonna love it or not?

The first few hours are storyline heavy, but from what I've played, it's very light on story/codec elements past maybe the first 4 hours. I'm very pleased with it, and I didn't enjoy MGS2 at all.

Codec chatter is practically non-existant compared to MGS2.

But you'll probably hate it, just given how you speak of it right now.

Pfft? Blink once for yes, twice for no? Well, you've certainly got the condescending dick routine down.

Let me change that previous recommendation. Don't ever play the game. You won't like it. You're not missing out on anything.

New totals for MGS3, Half-Life 2, and Halo 2 up to Peter Porker:

MGS3: 502
Half-Life 2: 422
Halo 2: 420

Last time I counted MGS3 only had a 40 point lead over Half-Life 2, but that's double to 80. Also, Halo 2 has cut the difference between it and Half-Life 2 from 20 to 2.

Damn, what's that I smell? Xbot damage control?

It is one the best games ever made so when people actually play the game they realize this. I would say it is fairly safe to mention GA is a bit hardcore and would pick up more games than the avarage person and play this great game.

MGS2 disappointment + November death release + KoA marketing the hell out of Rumble Roses instead (Good job KoA you sold 45K of Rumble Roses in November!) hurt MGS3. Not MGS3 itself. You can go to various boards and figure this out.

Make no mistake about it, the first couple hours IS cut scene/codec heavy. But this is basically the prologue and helps set up the rest of the game. After that, the game really opens up and puts you in control. Some cut scenes can be lengthy but they come at the right times after you have a long gameplay session. Pre boss cut scenes are pretty short too. No more long winded speeches before battle for the most part. Some of them are a couple lines and that is it the fight is on! Maybe the cut scenes are as long as MGS2, but don't forget these cut scenes are spread beyond a much longer game. Your mileage may vary, but it took me 11 hours to beat MGS2. It took me 23 hours to beat MGS3.

The story is very tight in MGS3 and there aren't any huge twists and turns. In fact, it helps explain some of the convoluted BS in MGS2.

1. GTA: SA
2. Halo 2
3. Chronicles of Riddick
4. Ninja Gaiden
5. MGS3
6. KOTOR 2
7. Rallisport 2
8. SMT: Nocturne
9. Kingdom Under Fire
10. Psi-Ops

Honorable Mentions: PM2, Katamari, X-Men, Outrun 2, UT2004, Joint Operations, Gradius V, HL2, Fable, Full Spectrum Warrior, Otogi 2

Basically, outside of a few top picks I could have made several different lists.

Sorry but any list that has a Kojima codec fest at no.1 after 4 pages of voting isn't worth participating in.

And besides, the fact that 2004 - The Year of the Xbox, means the Xbox vote was always going to be split...while PS2 only had 2 remotely decent games in the entire year - even then, any PS2 owner who puts MGS3 over GTA:SA needs a fucking lobotomy and should never be allowed to play games ever again.

Excuse me for bringing this up, but was I the first one to use this scoring system for ranking games?? I remember doing one of these for Xbox, PS2 a loooong time a go the same way :D

sure whatever you say jackass.

Metal Gear Solid bashing has become pretty tired and uninspired lately. I guess we can attribute this to the fact that overall MGS3 diminished the role of the one aspect gamers hated about MGS2 (codec) while enhancing the one aspect gamers loved in MGS2 (gameplay).

You haven't read a couple of post or played the game have you? Didn't think so.

Holy hell. About 5 minutes into updating, I get a call to go to work. Later tonight, I guess. :\

All front page lists have been added though.

1. MGS3- 10 points
-
-
-
-
6. Halo 2- 5 points
7. Tales of Symphonia- 4 points
8. Kotor 2- 3 points
9. MGS:TTS- 2 points
10. Paper Mario 2- 1 point

Wow, i havent played a lot of games this year.

1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
2. Mario Vs Donkey Kong
3. Gradius V
4. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
5. Katamari Damacy
6. Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

I might update my list later.

A lot of the big games this year are still waiting for me in my backlog, or I yet have to get them. So my GOTY 2004 list will probably change when I get done with playing those games (sometime next year), nothing will top MGS3 for me though, I'm sure.

Bitch, please.

All right. I've got Tuesday and Wednesday off. I'm going to rent MGS3, and give it a play through. I generally trust Mr. Bob's taste in games.

Game probably takes most people between 17 and 23 hours, Triumph. So be prepared ;b

Edit: Also, don't use thermals at all unless you're a gaming pansy. Makes the gameplay much more interesting/challenging.

Your post makes so little sense that I am shocked I am actually dignifying it with a response, but here it goes. Xbox vote split? People are posting top ten lists, and are free to place as many xbox games they want over MGS 3, but the majority choose not to. Most who have played MGS 3 would agree that it is an excellent blend of style and substance, and the pacing of the cutscenes is absolutely perfect. The cinematics, and story-telling aspects are so beautifully done that anybody who has any respect for them will send it to the top of their list without a second thought. You are entitled to your opinion, but undermining someone else's is asinine at best.

Oh Cockles, I think I hear Bill calling for you from the bedroom again.

Please, the MGS3 hate is getting really old, people. And as you'll see, the majority of the forum doesn't think like an Xbot, sir. Updated totals for MGS3, Half-Life 2 and Halo 2. Missing: the so called year of the Xbox. (Up to Interlude)

MGS3: 548
Half-Life 2: 430
Halo 2: 449

Amazing! While Halo 2 has surpassed Half-Life 2, MGS3 has almost a HUNDRED POINT lead! Xbots say what?

That is exactly how it should be. If only everybody could put their console alliances aside and enjoy MGS 3 for what it is.

Only two "remotely decent games" the entire year?

Boy, that is some good crack. I think the phrase you were thinking of were "only two games that appealed to me this year."

Man, you guys are really doing a great job hyping MGS3, and from the way you guys are talking, it's not just hot air. Gonna have to try and find a PS2 to try this game out.

Although im sure MGS 3 is a great game, I dont own a PS2 :( . The gaming trends on this forum are skewed to the Japanese style games as compared to sales in the US, no one is picking any sports games ?

World of Warcraft and Sid Meier's Pirates deserve more love.

"The gaming trends on this forum are skewed to the Japanese style games"

There is a strange and sometimes disturbing fascination with Japan on this forum.

Eh...shut the fuck up. After the first couple of hours there are pretty much no codec conversations, unless you decide to call people on your own.

It must really be hurting xbots that Halo 2's getting owned by MGS3. Hehe!

So tell me...... why are you posting in this thread again? SOUND THE ALERTS! TROLL INCOMING! :lol

Anyone who played MGS3 will recognize it's greatness, and that's showing. Great job everyone, we're leading by almost 80 points and that's the way it should be!

LOL. The Xbot's last resort to damage control MGS3's acclaim is that it's a "Japanese style" game, and that it's only getting praised because of the "strange and disturbing" fascination with everything Japanese.

Just updated the top three again (going to add San Andreas to my count today. It's high, but looking at the way it's been scored I don't think that it has a chance of being the top three at present, but I might be wrong.)

MGS3: 562
Halo 2:454
Half-Life 2: 440

Over a hundred point lead for MGS3! Again - Xbots say what! Prepping for more damage control.
