GB/GBC/GBA Collecting Thread

Which ones? As for decent falshcarts (that are available, I'm not talking M3 Perfect Lite of yesteryear) that have RTC and good compatability for GBA there really isn't anything that comes to mind, unless I'm missing some new manufacturer/storefront.

Ah yeah, if we're limiting it to currently on the market new, then you're right.

There's none with expandable storage apart from the supercard (crap) and the ez flash IV.

The others are vastly overpriced, difficult to obtain and can only store a few games at a time at max.

Really, the best option right now is the ez flash IV v2. Which is why the Everdrive is so sorely needed.

Right, that's basically what I was saying. I remember way back in the day I had the M3 Perfect Lite which had RTC (I ended up picking one up again a few years back just for nostalgia) but ever since I got Rudolph's tool rocking (and found all the old saves I backed up from my carts with the M3PL from back in the day) I've wanted to easily take my collection with me on a Micro but as Mac user with limited access to a PC (and the god awful interface of the EZFlash IV) I couldn't be ready for an ED GBA more.

Really would like RTC and it would be KILLER if it had tilt build in since there's no way for me to easily take Wario with me...

Ah yeah, if we're limiting it to currently on the market new, then you're right.

Right okay so I didn't miss some new hotness. And as for less prep, all the other ones I am aware of tend to require Windows right (i.e. no drag and drop which is great for OS X users)?

yay, my glass screen lens replacements arrived!

good times
Oh my word. These look stunning. I'll have to fish out my front-lit GBC to see if mine has one of these.

Swapped my spice case in my backlit unit to this. Love it.

WOW. I have a backlit glacier one that I got from Peagles a couple of years ago. It's awesome, but I'm jealous of this blue.

Yeah, I love the TRU Midnight Blue, although I think a third party case has similarly come out (I believe the (R) next to the Nintendo logo at the top is just a circle on third party cases).

Also, BIG NEWS!
CfThFGyW4AEt_TC.jpg

I would gladly throw away my EZ Flash IV for this upcoming Everdrive GBA (I wonder if it'll be a bigger cart with tilt in addition to reported RTC?)
Hooray for the GBA Everdrive! Though I wish it was the size of a standard cart.

Rich, is that a frontlight mod for the GBC? It looks stunning.

Nope! Just good old sunlight.

I actually did do the loca mod on another GBC, but I wasn't impressed.

dsc_0945w8f7m.jpg

I had a couple of air bubbles, but managed to press them out after that shot. Either way, I wasn't too fond of the washed out colours as a result of the front light nor the fact that the plastic light panel reduced the sharpness of the screen.

I sold it, made a profit. The guy who bought it was very happy with it so that's good.

For me, the GBC is fine as it is - it's the perfect outdoors console. Nearly all handheld devices suffer in sunlight - not the GBC. It's beautiful when in that situation thanks to the reflective screen. The backlit consoles though? Fucking impossible to see in direct sunlight.

So my GBC is basically my console for outside during the summer. Good times.

Yeah i have the same feelings, i thought it might have been the LOCA i used that caused the screen to lose its sharpness but if your reporting the same thing then i guess its just a side effect :(

It's due to the rough/textured side of the panel. Definitely has a detrimental effect on the sharpness of the LCD imo

The kits for the GBC really aren't great. I've got a frontlit mod that is very similar in quality to the original GBASP (as it uses the same orientation of frontlight, and the same light itself) and it's pretty fantastic.

Been interested in a pocket or DMG just for kicks, but at this point I'll just get a SGB2

It's a shame the GBC kits aren't very good. I want a GBC, but I also tend to play handhelds in the dark at this point. Wish those clone systems didnt have the issues they do have.

Guess we can just blame Nintendo for changing up their screen manufacturing at just the wrong time.
There's kits? I just used parts from an AGS-001.
Yup. Even the standard AGS-001 mod isn't great, though, due to the orientation and lack of loca (usually).

According to some folk on reddit and some other forums, a backlit GBC solution is being worked on

Hmmmm
One such individual /u/the_8bit_kingdom if I remember the name correctly is the modder I mentioned leaving the scene for a while. I'm not sure who else is working on it.

Regardless, unless they get them manufactured, it'll almost certainly just be a poc. You essentially have to rip apart the layers of the screen all adhered together just to access the place needed, and then replace a piece and somehow adhere them all back together. Nontrivial is understating it.

Yeh I never use my frontlit GBC, too washed out.

I concur, probably the biggest disappointment from all the mods I've done. I remember being so excited to fire it up and was like, meh.

I think it's the screen itself which causes a loss of screen sharpness that is the issue. If it was as crisp, the front light wouldn't be too bad.

You mentioned having "a frontlit mod that is very similar in quality to the original GBASP (as it uses the same orientation of frontlight, and the same light itself) and it's pretty fantastic."

Is this the same as the kit linked above that isn't great?

I obtained a modded GBC and I'm pretty disappointed by the curved vertical lines above the LCD itself. Colorless banding, effect of a polarization filter? They appear and shift as you tilt the GBC and I'm reading this is normal of all AGS-001 frontlit screens. I keep losing focus on the game and my eyes refocus on the lines above it. Distracting. :(

Edit: tilting the left side of the GBC minimizes the odd properties. So these screens turned on their side for this mod explains the vertical lines? When they were meant to be less visible horizontal lines on an SP screen that was always angled away from your face?

Hmmm...this is interesting. My GBC frontlight mod was done a few years ago, will have to switch it on sometime soon and see if I have the same issue.

It was done by the guy that runs this site:

http://www.gameboymods.co.uk/

...but he doesn't mod GBCs or GBPs anymore, unfortunately.

This is the mod I was referring to: http://imgur.com/a/WEM7f#0

The verticle lines are from the orientation of the light, yes. However this is a flaw that the mod I linked shares, though it far less pronounced.
Oh what happened to 8bit kingdom? I remember seeing his name/stuff around the place

so I got a usb power cable from ebay that's built to work with the GBP and GBC. It works flawlessly - and solves any power issues that the GBP has with the everdrive.

only issue is that my pocket has a replacement LED. It's awesome when on battery...but when powered via USB/mains....uh...

dsc_1209fvsjt.jpg

it's hard to get an image of just how fucking bright it is when mains powered. It's enough to blind someone. I don't want to remove it, so I guess I'll just have to put a sticker over it for these occasions

Hmm I still have a broken DS Lite that works. The hinge had broken on it and one of the shoulder button areas is fully exposed. How hard would it be to convert it into a GBA machine? Is the bottom display as good as the top one?

Well.

I just went to the local cafe for a coffee, took my pocket with me. Got a phone call, put the pocket into the case I have, on the table, and took the call. Looked away for what must have only been twenty seconds and when I looked back it was gone.

There's no CCTV, and the staff didn't see anything. Not too happy. Someone must have walked past and swiped it.

Edit: this sucks, my backlit GBP was awesome :(

That really sucks. A life of growing up in the city has taught me to besuper vigilant and never have my stuff out of sight or out of hand for any amount of time. That includes being aloof on public transportation near exits where thieves swipe and run as doors close so they can't be chased. A lot of scumbags are out there actively looking for opportunities to do the exact sort of thing that happened to you.

Yeah

I live way outside of the city though. Thought I'd be safe with my stuff in the town here.

Not gonna take anything else out like that again thats for sure.

I wonder if the cunt who nicked it thought it was a phone or something!!?.....must of had a shock when they took it out of the case and saw the GBP!, it it was a youth they probably wouldn't even know what it was!

You didn't have your EverDrive cart in it did you???

Nope luckily, it was Tetris. Thank fuck

And yeah, I doubt they knew what it was. Sadly, it will likely be thrown away or sold for pennies. And yeah they likely thought it was a phone or a camera.

I mean I guess I only spent £50 on it to begin with, but that was an insanely lucky deal - the only other one I can find on eBay right now is £85. And I had a perfectly good one earlier too. Sigh

But yeah at least my Everdrive wasn't in it. That would have rocketed up the loss to £130!

50! That was an incredible deal. I'm having one custom made and altogether it's going to cost quite a bit... north of $100.

I was actually really impressed by the blue shell and contrasty blue screen of yours, and mine will end up looking about identical. I believe there's an ocean between us so don't get any wrong ideas if I post a pic and it looks very familiar

Oh nice where/who is making it for you?

Also, Rich, more than the £130 you'd lose with the EDGB are all the saves you'd lose!

When my parents place was robbed and all my GB stuff was stolen I was devastated. It was nice to find the backup saves I'd made with my M3 Perfect Lite from back in the day, but even then it wasn't quite the same...

Next up I'd like to pick up a black GBP that is backlit. I had a black GBP for years and loved it. Although the DMG colored one is pretty nice too hah.

An eBay seller, gamerhop79. He had some really nice looking DMGs and a pretty detailed description of everything he does with the system: bivert, full recaps and refurb, new solder points, remove old flux, new parts, etc. I took a chance on one and it's excellent as far as I can tell. I contacted him aside about doing a backlit GBP and we worked it out.

8 hours ain't bad...

Nowhere near the color or DMG but I could cope. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I played through the entirety of Links Awakening on my GBP and only had to recharge them once. And even that was not out of necessity but just in case.

Bear in mind though that a backlit GBP (not biverted, far inferior backlight) I owned years back lasted about half an hour. I guess it was just badly modded.

Anyhow. I may have a new GBP sorted thanks to the same guy who did my DMG...who happens to live right next to my town. We shall see!

It's weird playing a bunch of DMG, backlit or otherwise, these days.

The batteries last so long you completely forget they need changing sometimes. The backlight starts getting spotty etx and I'm like 'oh man is my console dying' and it's like 'nope just dead batteries'.

Whereas my PSPs and 3DSes feel like they need a charge every time they are used.

It's funny my Sony handhelds seem to need charging all the time and drain completely dry even when not in use, but my Nintendo handhelds can sit for years and still have juice left in them, it's weird. Even my n3DS seems to last forever before it needs a charge, not as good as my GBA but certainly better than the damn Vita.

Alternatively, the Vita sleep mode is incredible compared to the crap that is any 3DS model lol :(

Are there any batteries available for Sp models ? My original console just can't keep the charge anymore, after all those years.
