Gears 5 Review Thread

Come on, games scored with a '10/10' have never been considered to be "perfect".

That's my point! 10/10 should reserved for something that is absolutely flawless and with little or no comparison. I mean, I'm absolute head-over-heels in love with MGS3 but I wouldn't give it a 10/10.

Don't just assume people who don't love it don't like the series, or xbox. That's ridiculous. And honestly, I've never seen a single member of the press who gives a crap about console wars.

I gave Gears 1 0/10, but found Gears 5 to be incredibly disappointing and dull. Save for the last hours though, they were pretty spectacular.

You gave the first game of the series...a 0 out of 10. You're not an actual reviewer are you?

abit disappointing the score is pretty much same as Gears 4 since the Gears 5 beta itself was miles better than Gears 4 (which i liked anyway), but i dont expect reviewers to understand or even score based on MP

Nothing deserves a 10.
Every game I've seen that had a 10/10 score was revisited at a later date and seemingly the consensus had changed. RDR2, GTA V, even Breath of the Wild. MGS4. Super Mario 64, Metroid Prime....blah blah blah. The whole hype and honeymoon period has enough longevity to influence these reviews. If I had it my way...I'd have advertisement then a free 1st level or maybe a set amount of time of gameplay for the masses. That way people can still make an informed purchase decision. Embargo the reviews until a week out. Then let everyone reflect on the experience together.

You're welcome.

No, a 10 out of 10 doesn't mean a game is "perfect." That's nonsense. No mere human effort is literally perfect. Michaelangelo's Pieta is one of the most beautiful sculpted works of human hands, but it could be slightly more beautiful. When we say someone achieved a "perfect" 10, we mean they have hit the highest mark on the ranking scale. In other words it is perfect in the sense that no better score could be achieved. It doesn't mean no greater effort was possible. This applies from Olympic ice skating to videogames.

I like the way IGN describes their 10:

10.0 - Masterpiece
Simply put: this is our highest recommendation. There's no such thing as a truly perfect game, but those that earn a Masterpiece label from IGN come as close as we could reasonably hope for. These are classics in the making that we hope and expect will influence game design for years to come, as other developers learn from their shining examples.

There is, of course, no expectation of (impossible) literal perfection to achieve this rank. For IGN a game achieves this rank when they see it as a "masterpiece" of developer effort, destined to be considered a "classic", that will influence game design for years to come. That makes perfect sense to me.

I wanna know if this will run at 144fps on PC. I doubt my rig can hit that but I would be happy with 90 to 100 fps. It's 60 fps on the X and still looks this good. This is gamepass for PC as well right?

No. There is no forgiveness for mistakes made on the Internet. Especially math and grammar mistakes.
Tell that to millennials texting in hieroglyphics on a regular basis. Its sad to see it seep into their educational papers...it's like it's own dialect almost.

I really struggle nowadays with the constant tonal shifts in Gears. They want you to take it seriously, yet the next moment something super campy and goofy happens. I loved the first Gears, so maybe that's what I'm always comparing it against.

Pretty much what the videos show. If one likes GoW 3-4, this looks like that.

After GoW1... less hard shooter and more campy action adventure, by GoW3 to me it kind just went into dumb Territory for my tastes, I still played GoW3 a ton but its just got goofy. (Cliffy lost his shit in 3, imo)

Fuck off Vawn. I won't repeat myself

You won't? There's nothing I can do to get another "Fuck off Vawn"? 😰

Also, calm down. You made a pretty funny mistake and double-downed on it. Just playing along.

I actually like the tonal shifts, as you call them. I think they can all fit inside a fun package. For example, look at the Princess Bride. The film has romance, goofy silliness, drama, comedy, action, etc. One minute the hero is comically rolling down a hill, shouting about his undying love and then fights silly giant rats and the next Inigo is confronting the six-fingered man who killed his father in an emotionally impactful scene.

I like that Gears has the range to go from Rambo bro-action, mowing down 30-foot spider monsters, to Dom's emotional discovery of Maria. (I don't like how Dom killed her, that was evil, imo. Years later Cliffy B said it was his commentary on the whole Terri Schiavo scandal [a woman who was starved to death]. I fundamentally disagree with Cliff's views on end of life issues, apparently.)

While we are counting mistakes, it's "doubled down" not "double-downed."

Thanks @Mista but:

1) never really trusted specs reccomandations, more often than not they are useless (control being the last example)
2)even more useless if they don't even say what "reccomanded" means...1080p60 frame max detail? 4k30frames? Anything in between?

But gears 4 on pc was probably the most optimized game i ever played so i hope my rig can take care of gears5.

That's interesting I didn't know that about the Maria scene. And I can totally see your point. A part of me wishes I could appreciate that kind of writing, but I just don't. It's partly the reason I don't find The Avengers enjoyable. It's kind of alienating lol

We will be doing the Twitch creators rount table today on Twitch at 1030am pst with some composers from games and some comic book writers and will be discussing Gears 5 a bit during it if you want to tune in. Not sure if that is shameless tooting of horns but pretty excited to come off of Gears 5 excellent soundtrack and talk to writers of games soundtracks as well.
