Genuinely scary moments in gaming (horror or non-horror)

Horror is hard to achieve since games are all about giving you control and empowering you to do cool shit

What games or moments in games actually scared you, even for just a moment?

They were jumpscares, so you can maybe say they were a little on the cheap side, but during the early parts of Resident Evil 7. Pretty much anytime I would run into Jack, I would yell out loud. Bastard always just knew how to sneak up on me when I wasn't expecting him.

The very first intro cinematic in RE1

The first time you encounter the Trex in Dino crisis

Seeing croc for the first time in arkham asylum

The screen shake as a tank shows up in Left 4 Dead

The school in FEAR

The fucking dogs jumping in that window hallway in RE1

mostly every part of alien isolation

Outlast......

Regenerador..... Absolutely fucking not

Doing a blind playthrough of RE7 in VR was the absolute peak horror experience for me. I wish I could’ve experienced something like that again, it was so incredible.

I think in the same way adrenaline junkies like jumping out of planes, I wanted to feel fear, and immersing myself in a VR survival horror sim was as close as I could get. There really were moments throughout that game where my senses were tricked just enough to make me feel like I was being attacked by a monster. The first few hours of that game my heart was absolutely pounding, my body sweating, and at time adrenaline kicked in. And I loved every moment of it.

Turning around the corner in P.T.
This. And what's great is this game is truly only intense playing it. I remember my wife and I playing it alone in our house, surround sound up loud. Beside us was a long hallway that was pitch dark. My wife thought I was faking that I didn't want to turn the corner. I handed her the controller and she apologized immediately. She couldn't even get around the corner.

Such an immersive experience.

Another "had to be there" game is Eternal Darkness. Some of the stuff they did in that game for its time made me freak out. I didn't know about the weird stuff with the TV it would do. I remember the TV turning off and I got up to figure out what happened. Then it blast back in with some loud noise. Scared the crap out of me.

I’d get creeped out in gears where you’d fight the bezerker who’d one hit kill you.

You got to used to the game mechanics, where everyone will get stomped first time encountering it.

The creepy part is running around but you can’t see behind you swiftly due to gears weird roadie running and third person stodgy movement. So you had to act fast or get rammed from behind.

bloodborne - nightmare of mensis // eeriest level in all of gaming and the moment you enter it you know something is deeply wrong with it.

Alan Wake 2 - Amusement Park level

Half Life 2 - standing on a roof top and watching the pipe shakes frantically while an alien climb on it to attack, never knowing when you’ll be get jump on

Tlou p2- hospital/basement

Silent Hill 2 remake - Blue Creek Apts // You literally take a step in to a nightmare and the whole game changes immedietly. It was the first time ive seen in a game where even the walls were creepy.

The Evil Within - First few hours at the asylum

P.T. - every second

Visage, The old woman chapter, when she's creeping by the door frames.
Resi 7 VR, all of it.
Crimson Snow, when she bursts through the door.
From The Darkness, hiding under the bed and that little bastards head lowers down.
Alien Isolation, all of it.
The Mortuary Assistant, that creepy old cow peering out of cupboards can get fucked.
Paranormal Activiy VR as a big pussy this entire game scared the fuck out of me.
The Exorcist: Chapter 3 Deep Skin.. I had to attempt this multiple times due to that mannequin scaring the hell out of me.
To be fair I have a phobia of been chased so anything that has chasing in it like Silver Chains or Trenches: World War 1 Horror

The Scarecrow sequence in Arkham Asylum was very unsettling, even as an adult.

Silent Hill’s constant downward spiral into a worse and worse nightmare was done masterfully. It’s still with me, 25 years later.

The dogs in OG Resident Evil is still the top jump scare. Absolutely nothing could prepare you for that. For years I still jumped off my seat at that part every time, even if I knew it’s coming. It’s really the moment that sells you on the game.

The 7th Guest deeply disturbed me as a teenager. After that one, I never wanted to delve into the FMV horror genre again.

I've mentioned it in other threads also.

My worst scare ever was in the old adventure game Scratches, the scene with the mask behind the door. I almost lost consciousness.
That game has another huge jumpscare in a basement....

There should be a sequel in the works called Asylum. Could be released next year.

The Shin-Ra office blood trail sequence in FFVII was unsettling back in the day I recall. The suspense coupled with the music gave it an undertone of an unnerving atmosphere.

Resident Evil 7, wading though the neck deep water in that fucking nightmare of a house. Moreso a claustrophobic sensation on top of that.
