Genuinely scary moments in gaming (horror or non-horror)

Like jump scares or the content was so disturbing to a point where it shook me to my core and left me frightened?
I was thinking more the latter, since jumpscares are

The first Uncharted and how the cursed were introduced to us the players (even Nathan/Elena would dismiss it in conversation when they saw clues). My memory might fail me here but I think it was the bunker chapter, where I thought it got a little scary, the background music, environment and everything. I thought it was pretty well done and thought to myself ND would make a great horror game. I had a friend who was playing through the game after me and he pretty much stopped playing once he got to that chapter and when I asked him why, he said: "It got too scary" and I had a laugh. Anyway, man... good times.

I would replay it but have been hoping for a remake or remaster to go through it again fresh but it's the one game they won't do that with! Ugh lol

EDIT
Side note, I loved the twists in the games but unfortunately when the main stream audience (really, everyone else) got into the series they complained too much and ND didn't do anything with that in UC4. People forget they are playing games sometimes I swear... if those were in the game because of Amy, then I miss Amy! Bring her back and have her work on UC!

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Silent Hill definitely gave the sense of dread.
Probably PT, same thing.
And for those saying Resident Evil 7 in VR...how did you play the other games mentioned, it's so tame to the point of laughable at it attempts.
And the family are mock worthy.
I found RE2 to be more unnerving in that respect.

Haven't been back to Narcosis since I got charged by what looked to be a squid and it smashed through my diving suit visor. Doesn't sound much, but it was in VR.

-That opening mission in mega man legends. Good use of just silence.
-First nightfall in Hyrule Field in OoT really got to me as a kid.
-The first two EA Harry Potter games, PC & Xbox.
-Finding G-man in ravenholm in HL2
-SOMA (all of it)

Krellian's Lab in Xenogears. You find out about the human experiments happening. There's a lot of thematically scary dialogue too if you speak with the experiment subjects.

This is why I don't like horror games in general. It's always the same overused tropes again and again.
- Creepy old lady
- Creepy little girl
- Creepy rednecks
- Creepy clown
- Dark rooms
- Dark rooms with blood on the walls
- Dark rooms with mannequins
- Dark tight corridors
Etc etc

Fiction with fantasy or sci-fi elements have infinite potential but most horrors games and movies seem to be happy about repeating themselves eternally.

Arkham Knight has SO many jump-scares. Alan Wake was much much heavier on the horror element as well, as compared to the first game. The level inside the nursing home in particular was brutal.

Not joking. That tarantula terrified me as I had no idea something would actually chase me and bite me. It's basically as close as you come to dying in the game. Doesn't help that it only appears during the night if I remember correctly.

Resident Evil 7 VR (PlayStation VR)

I genuinely was afraid to go down to the basement while being at the top of the stair which was pitch black and I was only playing the f****** DEMO !

That was one of my best gaming time in my life after playing the NES and SNES as a child for the first time.

VR = 💖💖💖4EVER to me

Kojima horror often gets me, especially PT. Looking forward to whatever he's working on with MS.

I even found Death Stranding scary whenever encountering BTs. There's something so creepy about the heartbeat, music, rain and feedback on the controller that made me needlessly dread going through BT territory in a game that wasn't even meant to be scary. Reminded me of playing the well section in Zelda as a kid.

I have three equaly scary

Resident evil 1 - the first time the lizard humanoid enters through the iron door and turns around the corner ... biggest fear

Resident evil 2 - the fake mirror room where the monster first time appear and break through the glass... biggest jump

TLOU2 - biggest shit

Bonus gif that's even more horrifying.

That game man. I never really felt fear in a game before playing Amnesia, but this unlocked something deep inside of me.
I will never forget the water part. Once I realised what I was happening, I genuinely felt almost nauseous.

Nothing comes close, not even house Beneviento of RE8 in fucking VR.

Pure terror. Pure genius.

Resident Evil 1
The dogs jumping through the window.

Resident Evil Remake
Encountering the first crimson head. Unexpected and a great addition to the game.

Clock Tower
The first encounter with scissorman. Absolutely terrified me.

- Amnesia Dark Descent was too much for me to push through --although I call bullshit on an early(?) segment with an invisible monster splashing on water chasing you.
- Batman Arkham Asylum has a scene where they start introducing scarecrow... and their brilliant asshole idea was to make it seem like your GPU card kicked the bucket and maybe your PC is about to crash (or explode). That was proper scary; I almost panic and reached to do a hard reset.

Alan Wake (first game) is not a scary game really, it telegraphs everything to its detriment.
But there was a sequence where you fight a bunch in a town, as I'm collecting batteries and ammo after the encounter one of the monsters surprised me by lunging at me out of nowhere. Somehow it got stuck/had pathing issue which kept if from coming during the scripted event. So I got a truly organic jump scare.

"Turn the console off, right now"

Nothing will ever compare to that. It literally sent shivers down my spine back then.

I'm probably broken or something's wrong with me. But I can't play scary games and be afraid. Yes, sometimes jump scare can score a point, purely because of the surprise effect (This is the laziest and most uninspired type of horror in my opinion, although it works well). But I've never had to sit and be afraid to play a game.

P.S - Although this thing scared the hell out of me, those who know will understand.
I'll hide it in a spoiler to create a scary effect. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

For me its the jump scares you dont expect coming because they arent planned.

Phasmophobia was a good example of this. Even when playing with friends, I’ve jumped out out of my chair from a ghost jumpscare from time to time

Ever tried VR horror? That might take it to the level you need.
I played Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in VR and liked it. I can't say it was scary, but it was more interesting than a regular playthrough. My wife screamed during the game. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
