Geoff Keighley is apparently attempting to trademark "The Game Awards" with the US Patent Office

I'm not sure that "Game Awards" has acquired sufficient distinctiveness to get a trademark. Isn't that the banner term basically everyone uses in some form? It's kinda tough to secure a trademark for such a generic term.

Should probably update the title to be actually accurate. He's trademarking "The Game Awards". The name of the award show he's been putting on and hosting for like 10 years now.

That's a significant difference than just attempting to trademark "Game Awards".

For reference, American Music Awards, Country Music Awards, etc are all trademarked.

You mean like the guy that trademarked the word « Edge » and profited from it for years?

But creating fake news and crying about it on X is what gamers do in 2024

I tell you that this guy belongs to the power mafia. He's very involved with the video game journalism mafia...

Trying to get the crap out of Dragon Age is the winner of the video game of the year...

This is how it wants to give way to the destruction of the video game industry.

I'm actually surprised he didn't try sooner considering how much money is involved in the show these days.

I find it amazing that even with the patent aplication in the tweet ppl cant read. Hes patenting "The Game Awards" name cuz its the name of his show. The patent also only covers live shows or internet shows that are meant to reward games or companies. So it dosent stop a game for using a trophy system called The Game Awards, much less Game Awards cuz thats not whats being patented.

You know it wasn't until fairly recently that I learned his parents were big wigs at IMAX. For the longest time I always thought he got there on his own merits.

There's only one way a man who is such a charisma-vacuum has achieved what little relevance he has in entertainment. His parents paid the way for him.

You can have nepotism on your side and still fail. I admire what he's accomplished over the years, and I think to downplay his effort isn't really fair.

It's a typical knee jerk reaction to a tweet that got the details wrong and just trust what is written, took me two seconds to realise it was "The Game Awards"

If it was just "Game Awards" then I would take issue with it but adding "The" changes it considerably.

It's just a show, y'all shouldn't watch it if it really hurt the industry. I've seen it many times, negativity leads to being irrelevant sooner or later and different folks will take haters place cause this is how things been going forever.

As with similar cases I think the problem here is the legislation. IMO you shouldn't be able to trademark something as generic as "the game awards".
But if it's allowed I can't blame him for attempting to do so.

Not surprising considering it's probably a huge source of his income.

Yes but what? Is he worried someone is just going to copy his event and bring in all those reveals and deals? Surely his stability is through being the most connected motherfucker in the industry and not the generic title of his show.

If you can trademark "Apple" it think this is no problem.

But Apple in the context of a company that does consumer electronics and software isn't generic.
This is more like having a bakery called "A bakery" and trademarking that name. Or if instead of Amazon Bezos had gone with "online store"
