Enough Geoff Keighley. Enough State of Play. Enough 25 “bass drop” trailers. This is stupid.

its the voice of snake he gets a pass

I know, I know, literally no one asked for this — and don't even get me started on the other goose-voiced actress. But seriously, who on earth thought these two cringe hosts were a good idea? What was the point? They could've just stayed home and let the trailers roll without clowns spelling out the obvious.

Real solution is to just stop tuning in for these events live, and watch the trailers that look interesting afterwards.

I've only ever tuned in live if I'm talking with friends online, usually with alcohol, and you can just make fun of the dumb parts.

I recommend

Live demos only. Only the person playing talks.

Ah!

No, gamers are savages to any little technical glitch that would inevitably happen to a live demo. That's why they stopped doing it long ago. Big AAA games are complex and sometimes even right before (or even after) launch there's messy stuffs.

That's why now you get marketing curated and approved reels.

Squadron 42 last October tried the 1h15 live demo, 2 crash happened and a glitch and fucking internet shit on it. With that kind of attitude that's why devs stopped.

I want to advocate for a reset in video game marketing. Some thoughts on how to start:

I think we're up to about 300 bass pounds per average Geoff Keighley show.. and if you ask me I think they start losing their impact around the 100 or so mark. BOOM BOOM BO-BO-BA-BOOM. Enough.

Japanese exposition laced trailers also need to go away. They're awkward. For everyone.

10 minute DLC announcements. Go away.

State of Play. Go away.

I haven't seen a live event with genuine enthusiasm in it since the E3 where they announced FFVII remake.

Stop faking it. Start making it.
You could also just stop tuning in. Just stop watching the stuff.

There are definitely people who like it. There are definitely people who don't. The organizers are probably keeping an eye on ratings. Money always wins. :)

My thread from yesterday got locked. People love their Geoff, it's fine. Consoom product.

I miss those live shows, especially during E3. The same day we had MS, EA 2 hours later, then Ubi and a few hours after Sony. We ate good back then, we just didn't realise it.

They have to be flashy and stupid, cringe inducing for kids and morons to pay attention and get hyped on reddit. Know that everything and everyone that targets mainstream audience will be cringe and not worth a genuine human beings time. As far as I can see, all media releases including video games which are relevant, can be counted on fingers of one hand, every year. You know what these "shows" and people involved are about and it's not video games at all, at all.

Guy's creeping me out. He's like some kind of possessed animatronic, but the spirit has left it and some really small part of it is still trapped.
The only thing he can do is

*creepy Mr.Beast smile* Next up, a dark fantasy world blablabla, take it away!
*creepy Mr.Beast smile, money chuckle* You can expect that in 202X. Up next a beloved indie studio which gave us blabla bla in this world premiere!
etc etc etc

I think this plus all the slop presented doesn't actually exist, it's some kind of mental social contagion like in Pontypool.
One day we'll all wake up as an NPC stuck in a JRPG and can only stand still and say;
"Whoa, those flowers are nice!"
"Whoa, those flowers are nice!"
"Whoa, those flowers are nice!"
For all eternity.

Yeah man, I want those dedicated live stage events back, with big world premieres showing long gameplay from a AAA game like God of War at E3 2016, the same press conference that also revealed Spider-Man, the first Horizon Zero Dawn gameplay, and the very first Death Stranding trailer. I'm sure the way and the place they were shown played a huge role in the hype and success of some of those titles.

Is it really that expensive to do conferences at events and also bring back the PlayStation Experience?

I don't think Nintendo, Sony and MS are interested, I imagine they'll have their own metrics showing the get better reach with the Nintendo Direct (and clones) for much less hassle.
I miss it though.

Honestly, just watch, or don't watch. I don't think the format or the presentations are going to change anytime soon, unfortunately. I don't feel like there's been anything super exciting revealed at one of these shows in a long while. Hell, I've had times where I didn't watch and just looked at all the reveals afterward and it felt like I lost absolutely nothing, lol.

I genuinely don't know of a single gamer who likes Geoff Keighley. At best, he's inoffensive and boring, like slice of unbuttered toast. But at worst, he's cringey, self-absorbed, and annoying as shit.

I wouldn't mind him for one event a year, but we really need some new blood for hosting. Geoff is not the emperor of video games.
You really know him when he get closer to industry icons like Kojima but I still like him more than many s presenters.

I get the nostalgia for E3 etc.

But if you don't like these modern events just stop watching them

I only read the news of announced games and watch some trailers, couldn't care less about the show around them

How are people supposed to spend their days if they can't work themselves into a rage about something trivial then rant about it on the internet?

Why is Geoff Keighley hosting all these events?
Because major publishers noticed that to spend a shit ton of money in their own E3 and Gamescom conferences and booths isn't worth it, and was more profitable instead to focus their marketing budgets on online marketing like social media, releasing trailers in youtube and on making their own digital events on video, smaller but multiple of them per year.

Players wanted to have industry game showcases specially in Summer, and there was a void there that nobody wanted or knew how to do it successfully. Same goes with having a "Oscars of the videogames" awards, the industry wanted to have it but nobody did it.

Geoff had the contacts and did it.

State of Play. Go away.
Nah, they need to continue making around 4 general State of Plays per year (winter / very early in the year, spring / before the FY results report, summer / pre-E3, fall / pre-TGS) focused on showing stuff coming to PS mainly in the next 6-12 months, plus a couple game specific SoPs per year.

Donald Glover Reaction GIF

Look brother, no one is mad at you for hating these stupid game shows, I'm not. We aren't blind. We are okay if you point out how much the poor man's award show format sucks. We know. There is very little entertainment value and it is super commercialized.

I'm just a little surprised by those who never do anything themselves and only complain. Who try to remove things arbitrarily with really no reason when they are enjoyed by others and when there is a use for the show, to create buzz and get games recognized with these trailers.

Are you really that mad that the trailers have filler between them? You don't even have to watch it. It is there for people who want to watch it. Are you mad that you have to wait the length of the show to watch the trailers? That is such an irrelevant reason to be mad. Your Keighley hate is so weird. We don't cancel people because you don't like the cut of their jib.

My main issue with these shows that they are way too long. It's simple push too many information and trailers etc to you and after awhile is just become a blur...
I shorter more compact show would be much more informative and interesting

I only watched two Nintendo Directs and never watched another one again. Nowadays I just check the list of announcements at the end of the day and watch the trailers. To me, Nintendo's largely to blame for this terrible idea of doing these lifeless digital events.

They are, they started it then the others all copied them.
They were glorious in the Iwata days though.

80% of trailers now days are just Unreal 5 Souls-Slop as well. Game reveals haven't been fun or interesting for a while now. Pity, I used to enjoy them.

I'm not really sure what else you can do but stop watching them altogether since it might not be for you. Maybe it's just not fun for you anymore or you let the nostalgia drive your thinking too much? The shows structure and content will change to match the market trends over the years, but otherwise have been consistently the same for the most part. I enjoy my big event shows and 3-4 give me something to look forward to throughout the year so it's good with me.

UE5 games don't deserve another E3.

Wait, I need to organize my own award show now to criticize Keighley?

The industry is in a tough position right now. We could use some inspiration and some new faces to push forward. I don't hate Keighley. He's a marketing tool, a billboard come to life.
Is this really the best this industry can do? Time to retire, old man.
