Hitachi achieves industry-leading areal densities via Perpendicular Recording
In March 2005, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies demonstrated an areal density of 230 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in2) on perpendicular recording technology, the highest areal density achieved to date based on vertical recording. This accomplishment represents a doubling of today’s highest data densities on longitudinal recording technology. At the current rate of growth, Hitachi expects to see products shipping at 230 Gb/in2 in 2007, translating into storage capacities of up to 20 gigabytes* on Hitachi’s one-inch Microdrive and up to one terabyte on the Hitachi 3.5-inch Deskstar hard drive.

man if only they had this for every tech announcement. SHIT that was great. MORE I demand MORE. I hope we get these in devices in players soon.

There are no words that can adequately describe how awesomely, supremely surreal this is.

Even more so when you consider someone actually sanctioned this in Hitachi.

:D

:lol

Hitachi's PR must of watched the Simpson's ep of the 60's throwback of the bill added a soul beat and BAM. Anyway much more enteretaining than Whoah- look at our sleek and furutristic product development.

The HD voice really needed to be more Barry White-ish.

OMG. THis is the most interesting storage capacity explanation I've seen. I'll pass this along to my professors.

weird. Thanks for the info.

Superawesome.

More importantly, any word on when this tech. will be available to consumers, and price?

Avoording to Engadget 20GB microdrives & 1 TB 3.5 inch HDDs will be available within 2 years, while 2.5 inch HDDs(Laptop HDDs) with perpendicular tech will be available before the end of the year.

I guess when you have a technology that awesome .. it makes sense to develop advertising that is equally as awesome.

Seriously .. I wonder how many man-hours it took to make that.

Holy shit! That flash was awesome. And better yet, this technology is awesome too. I wonder if read/write speeds will suddenly go through the roof. This could...*could* make putting a HDD in a console a cheap option. This is great news. PEACE.

That was TOO COOL!

Such a simple concept as well (although probably hard to implement). Hmmm, I wonder how much Hitachi stock is ;)

Wow - that was great.
Some intern at Hitachi has way too much time!

Can't wait 'til iPod Minis are big enough (capacity-wise) to phase out the 'regular' iPods.

Nice. But that is 2MB worth of animatige gifs you've just posted. 56k people are flipping out in their bunkers. PEACE.

They're for people to crop out a smaller section from with whatever GIF program they use.
