[GfK Chart-Track] UK Monthly Charts - September 2017

Sales of boxed video games improved in the UK during September compared with the same period a year before.

Over 2.36m physical games were sold, a rise of 7% over September 2016. The main sales drivers were FIFA 18 and Destiny 2, with the EA title claiming the No.1 spot ahead of Activision's shooter.

As a result, EA was the No.1 boxed games publisher of the month in the UK, after several months outside of the Top Five. Activision jumps to No.2 (although has been ranking highly all summer thanks to the success of Crash Bandicoot), and Nintendo is pushed down to No.3 following several months at the top.

The surprise star performer of September was NBA 2K18, which is 28% up in sales compared to last year's title (physical sales only).

Although the numbers may paint a positive growth picture, it was actually an underwhelming month for the games market. FIFA 18's physical launch sales are lower than FIFA 17's (although FIFA 17 was on sale for a bit longer), and last year didn't have a secondary 'Destiny 2-sized' launch, so the 7% rise needs to be taken in that context.

There was broad growth for Switch last month, which sold more games during September than at any previous month since it launched - Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids turning in a strong performance and making the Top Ten.

However, Switch sales do appear to be slowing slightly, with stock becoming more readily available at retail. Indeed, the UK performance of Switch hasn't matched other territories.

Month One sales for Destiny 2 are down 50 per cent compared to Destiny.

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 landed No.10, once again losing its fight against FIFA and with sales down 16.7 per cent compared to PES 2017.

Bandai Namco's Project CARS 2 debuted at No.14, while its predecessor entered the monthly charts at No.2 back in May 2015. Sales for the sequel are down 75 per cent compared to Project CARS.

Bruno is there any available data to see how software yoy is going over a longer period of time?

Fx the past 10 years.

Uncharted is slaying, is it still legging ahead of 2 ? If that sold 6 million+ LTD, Lost Legacy has a bright future ahead.

PC 2 at 14 and FH3 at 4, lol.

In its defence, Forza Horizon 3 is practically being given away with every Xbox One purchase in the UK.

The performance on Crash is similarly astounding. Like, Mario + Rabbids was apparently a good launch, boosted Switch sales to their best since the launch month... and that still winds up behind the Bandicoot.

Gonna be interesting what sort of shot up the arm Mario Odyssey provides.

I used to post monthly charts with very detailed data with breakdown by platforms and year-over-year comparison, but MCV magazine stopped reporting the weekly and monthly market data.

What I can provide is the yearly software sales.

Honestly feel Horizon 4 will beat previous Forza launch numbers and go on to topple 7.

To me, it feels like its the mainline Forza. Such an incredible game, very happy for Playground Games.

Agreed. Although I would love for Playground Games to try their hand at a new non racing game project.

I'm really surprised at NBA 2K18 being so high. Basketball games (outside of NBA Jam) haven't traditionally done particularly well in the UK have they?

Wonder if the 40m diference between 2008 and 2016 is accounted for by digital?

Crash is an incredibly popular IP. The first 3 PS1 entries and the first PS2 entry were best-selling games in UK. The remake collection has a very high quality-price ratio.

Is this indicative of physical games as a whole?

As for PC2, I am not in the slightest surprised, so many people were burnt by the first one, and at least on console, the second one is in a similar state.

It's a shame to for Metroid to debut so low, but after seeing how FE: Echoes did (at least on the NPD charts) I'm not surprised.

Sales of Nintendo consoles are always going to struggle in the UK aren't they? Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever move on from the "lad" culture we have over here who are only interested in Fifa, Cod etc, and a lot of folk won't buy a Nintendo console without the big third party hitters such as Destiny, GTA.

I'm okay with that. They seem to push their series further than what Turn 10 does with motorsport.

Out of the 35 XB1 bundles in GAME, 16 of them are Forza Horizon related. Out of 42 PS4 bundles in GAME, 9 of them are Destiny 2 related. Can we use the same theory for Destiny 2?

As has been discussed in other threads, not necessarily so - that wasn't the case in the Wii and DS days for example. Plus, Nintendo is still in third place in terms of publishers, behind EA and Activision - so right now it's actually doing pretty strongly. It just happened that the football simulator hit, and the sequel to one of the most popular shooters in recent memory.

Now, whether the sales for the Switch pick up over the course of the month, or drop even further, will be something to watch.

This is a better gauge for what you're trying to check:
https://www.hotukdeals.com/search?q=xbox+one

Looking at how many bundles are available at a single retailer is a silly way to judge that, or are you trying to make the case that Forza Horizon 3 isn't heavily bundled and that its position on the chart isn't indicative of that ? Because..

Microsoft’s ‘Forza Horizon 3’ climbs 6 places to No3 driven by many hardware/software bundles

.. is a direct quote from GfK from the latest weekly charts that is echoed consistently.

No. He's saying that a lot of games are bundled. Ex FIFA and destiny. That's just how the U.K. Charts are formatted

Like Blake said, I wasn't gauging. I just think that using the defence of bundling may distort the results. I need a breakdown first.

But it has nothing to do with it simply being bundled, it's that it is offered in the cheapest deals. As it stands, if you are looking to buy an Xbox One S in the UK, you are very likely getting a copy of Forza Horizon 3 along with it.

Fair enough. :)
