Wifey gave it a 5/10, mother a 4/10, and my sister a 6/10. I gave it a 4/10.
I was just so damn bored throughout the film. There were admittedly a few decent chuckles - but not a single laugh-out-loud moment for anyone in the entire (almost full) theater. The first 30 minutes have all the pitfalls of the "origin story" we see in superhero movies. The whole ending was just a
boring CGI battle with terrible action, no set piece, and worst of all, pretty much no humor whatsoever.
Kate McKinnon was easily the best part of the film; she seriously squeezed every ounce of humor out of the writing. And that gets me to the core point - these actresses did pretty great work with what they had. They were absolutely in no way the reason this movie bombed, as much as the internet would like you to think. Nope, it was the writing - I mean, people have waited for this for a decade plus, now. And in all these years, THIS was the best writing they could get? A nonsensical, snoozefest of a plot and jokes that would fit in an run-of-the-mill SNL skit?
Glad others are liking it! I mean, at least Hemsworth was good and the "toiler humor" actually landed. The physical humor - which I'm typically not a fan of - was actually pretty decent, too.
Just got back. i saw it in IMAX 3D. I thought it was pretty good.
I don't feel its better than the original (to be fair the original is one of my personal top three movies of all time). Definitely one of the best remakes I've seen.
i need to sleep on it as to whether I think its as good as or better than Ghostbusters II (which I think is a pretty good movie as well). It is at least as good as GB II, though.
Saw it with my 7 year old daughter tonight in 3D. Saw two kids dressed up too lol. A boy was a Ghostbuster with proton pack and his sister (I'm guessing) was the Stay Puft marshmallow man). I enjoyed it and didn't get any sort of bad taste in my mouth about being some sort of feminist propaganda or whatever. Don't know where that bullshit came from but I didn't see it. Kevin had me laughing any time he was onscreen! Patty wasn't as annoying and over the top as people lead me to believe and I love that they had Erin gettin' down with Patty after they caught their first ghost. Erin can get it :3 I was definitely entertained by the film and my daughter was as well though she was really scared at a couple spots and wanted to take her 3D glasses off out of fear of jumpscares...it was mainly just because of how damn loud the volume was though. I'll venture as far as to say that in my opinion this is one of the better reboot/remake/sideboot/sidemake (whatever the fuck you wanna call it) movies I've seen.
This thread is all over the place, which isn't necessarily a good sign. One post says McKinnon was amazing, next says she was worst part of the film. One post says Hemsworth was awful, next one says he was great. My expectations are decidedly down the middle after this thread, which I guess is good?

I enjoyed it a lot but agree with you in the sense that I think the film succeeded in spite of its script, rather than because of it. Some stuff in there was just way off the mark.
I know that feel. Most people I know aren't interested in it and the internet is a graveyard. If you do manage to find good discussion it's usually derailed.
GAF has been pretty good actually, whether people liked it or not most are being pretty respectful of differing opinions.
it wasn't as bad as the 1st trailer made it to be, but it wasn't great either. whatever enjoyment i mustered from the movie was from the MCs trying to make the ho-hum script work with their acting skills. I am always a fan of Kristen Wig and she delivered when she could.
otherwise, the pacing, CG work, and some questionable choices made me really really regret seeing this at the theater and not as a redbox rental.
I thought it was enjoyable, but not as hilarious as Feig's other films. There weren't a standout jokes (although some of Kevin's bits got close) and the villain was pretty lame. But I enjoyed the chemistry between the four characters and actually enjoyed the ghosts' designs.
Overall, it was okay. Maybe a B-/C+? I think a sequel - freed of feeling compelled to have those nodding cameos and be an origin story - may be able to do something more interesting than this one did.
Better than Ghostbusters 2. I didn't think it was great but I didn't think it was bad either. Was absolutely not worthy of having an internet shitstorm centered around it. It was okay. Decent enough summer blockbuster to just sit back and relax with, and if you like the original then it will be satisfying enough. I generally liked the cameos, Ernie Hudson's was my favorite. I did notice that I barely laughed at anything... so I guess on some level for me personally it failed as a comedy? But I still generally had a fun time so eh, I can't complain much. It was a Hollywood revival/reboot that was pretty solid; that's honestly pretty rare in my opinion, so I do think they should be proud they weren't awful like other movies in that vein often are.
Honestly the one thing that really throws me off is the praise for Kate McKinnon, I found her to be incredibly obnoxious and I had no idea what her character was trying to be. She had some funny moments, but she also had a ton of annoying moments. Depending on the scene, she was either "look how random I am, isn't randomness funny???" or a super-fast-muttering info-dump-plot-convenience... sometimes both simultaneously. Is randomness in vogue again, or is Jim Carrey about to have a comedy movie resurgence full of sticking out tongues, licking things, and gesticulating weirdly? That was what McKinnon's performance felt like to me, a tribute to Jim Carrey's worst work.
I enjoyed it more than I expected. Really dug the aesthetic for the ghosts (loved the retro NYC theme, almost cartoonish colors), and got a Scott Pilgrim vibe out of that last action sequence.
That said, I think this film would be decidedly better if it wasn't labeled as a Ghostbusters reboot. The cameos & callbacks were extremely hamfisted, and the best bits of the film would be improved if it was just an original sci-fi comedy. As such, I get why an existing fan might treat this movie harder than it needs to be.
Cast was fantastic. McKinnon's a star, and the chemistry between the four is top-notch. Interview scene with Hemsworth was hilarious, and I found myself laughing consistently.
Overall, a solid 7 of a movie. Gets better as it goes along.
Gratuitous cameos and third act aside, it was great. Jokes landed pretty regularly and the characters had great chemistry. Chris Hemsworth was even stupider than I thought he'd be, but I kinda liked it.
Oh yeah, and that villain was baaaad. It felt like a parody of that kind of character sometimes but other times almost seemed serious and it was really underwhelming.
I think the movie would have been stronger if they took the villain more seriously and they gave him more screen time to really develop properly. The actor didn't leave a huge impact.
Just heard the blu-ray will be getting an extended cut (about 15 mins) apparently, so that could explain and fix some of the choppy editing that has been talked about in reviews and from people who have seen it.
Wow....well, there's your reason why you can't find anyone on the Internet or reddit who agree's with you. That's a pretty isolated opinion!
Out of curiosity, how long ago did you see the originals? I'm guessing people who didnt grow up with those probably like this new remake more.
And did anyone who watched it notice a few things from the trailer were cut?
There was one I remember seeing that I thought was funny - the scene where the delivery guys' bike gets exploded by the gear testing. I remember seeing a trailer where he calls the girls adorable or something, saying they'll never find men, then they purposefully blow up his bike, and are all "yeahhh bitch!".
I am no critic but the wife and I did enjoy this movie and do not understand the hatred. I would give it a solid 7. I don't feel like it made an attempt at carrying the torch forward from the original which is fine by me, it's just it's own thing which is fun. There were really no people in the theatre at 10pm when we saw it though which was odd for an opening weekend.. after the credits a guy in the back said "who ya gonna call" and some other guy says "the real ones" followed by some weird high fives from other people.. it was like why did you pay to watch this if your inner man child was going to sit there reminding you its not the 80's anymore?
Looks like there's a 20 point difference between the critics and fans on RT, which is about the same as Anchorman 2 (turned off after 20 min), interesting. Wasn't going to see this film but the feedback is changing my mind. Will be interested to see if GAF collapses on it in a few weeks like EP7.
Secret Life of Pets is more enjoyable if you love animated talking animals and don't mind seeing a re-hashed Toy Story plot, but most of its jokes aren't really amazing and it too suffers from some convenient plot elements.
Ghostbusters is more enjoyable if you're more a fan of comedians riffing off each other, but doesn't work quite as well if you're hoping for quotable lines or humor that's reminiscent of the original GB.
I preferred GB slightly to Life of Pets (C+ to B-), but that was more due to me enjoying the chemistry of the 4 leads even if I didn't laugh out loud once during the film.
I wanted so bad to like this. Totally forgettable. I got out of the movie a half hour ago and have already forgotten most of it. This was about as average as you can get.
My 5 year old daughter, who loves the originals, was bored out of her mind.
Wifey gave it a 5/10, mother a 4/10, and my sister a 6/10. I gave it a 4/10.

Oh God no. She was by far the worst part and made me think about getting up and leaving. She was horrible.
Hemsworth was by far the best part of this Movie honestly with Wigg right behind him. None of the other actors were standouts besides McKinnon being so terrible.
The villain was also terrible with absolutely no motivation at all. Near the end in
logo ghost form
he looked super duper cool, but God he was so stupid as a character and the most generic thing ever.
The FX I thought were really really cool looking and the intro actually gave me chills with how good that was. Gave me those hardcore Ghostbusters "library" feels. Speaking of the original...
The cameos were dumb. They should've just made them their characters of the past. Would've been so much more interesting, and hilarious.
He's excited about the movie and loved it, and is using this thread to share it. That's okay. It's weird that people seem to get downright offended or annoyed by someone being positive about something but that's the internet in a nutshell for you.
A lesson you need to learn instead of displaying some internet badge of honor every time someone expresses an opinion of a movie (of all things) that contradicts your own. It's okay if he is baffled as to what people see in the movie. You don't have to counter every person with criticism for the movie with petty shit like "two can play at that game".

I had to go see it again in IMAX after reading everyone's praises, and JFC. It's PERFECT for that format! Probably one of my favorite 3D experiences, honestly. Immersive and exciting!! I mean, that third act throwdown, especially Kate... hoooooly crap ❤_❤
I'm definitely going to have to invest in a big ass 4K 3DTV, some 3D in movies is just too damned good.
Ghostbusters
Prometheus
Jurassic World
I also think I remember Deathly Hallows 2 being pretty good in 3D, but that's been like 5 years ago.
I really want more of these cartoony, funny and over the top Ghostbusters movies, if they're going to be as fun and enjoyable to watch especially in 3D.
I think the movie would have been stronger if they took the villain more seriously and they gave him more screen time to really develop properly. The actor didn't leave a huge impact.
Ghostbusters have never been about "the villain," though. It's a team of relatively societal outcasts using nonsensical science to catch ghosts. The biggest opposition/contrast as always been "other people," outsiders who don't believe. Which was handled well in this movie, mostly around developing Kristen Wiigs characters. While The ghosts are really the "enemy" appeal and they were as silly as ever in this movie.... Loved the balloons and the NYC throwbacks.
It was rather good! My whole group enjoyed it.
Not sure it's a classic, but it's entertaining, fun, and the cast worked well together. Will see sequel.
Anyone else think Rowan as a villain is sort of... meta? He came across as the kind of guy that would leave poisonous Youtube comments about the movie, for instance. I'm not sure if that was their intention, but even if it were, they're not making fun of everyone against the movie, just the kind of basement dwelling sleazenuggets that were hurling all the insults and whatnot.
Again I'm probably way off on that, but it is a thought I had while watching it I won't lie, I would actually love this if it were the case.

I would like to know if that has any merit, but at the same time, since people love to twist words and meanings, it would probably cause some serious backlash (further I mean) if all the people who don't like the movie took it as the filmmakers making fun of all of them, when it would actually just be specifically toward the more... severe crowd out there.
Definitely more than a few meta moments. When Abby mentions them getting dumped on constantly is highlighted only because Rowan mentions how hard he's had it as if they haven't... which of course we've watched through the movie narrative, but the real life parallel is just too blatant to ignore. By which I mean, I don't mind a little meta in my movie, especially after I've watched how the people involved have been harassed through the entire production from start to finish :|
I'd rather it'd just be its own quirky reboot but that just wasn't gonna happen. Whether anyone likes it or not, it's a part of this movie's history (I guess?) so whatever.
The bad guy here is a thwarted science geek turned hotel worker named Rowan North (writer-actor Neil Casey) who has been planting ghost-amplifying devices all over the city to bring about a supernatural apocalypse and punish the society that has failed to recognize his presumed genius. He's the cultural stereotype of the sort of immature man who'd protest a lady-centric remake's right to exist by down voting the film's trailer with Cheeto-stained fingers from a wood-paneled rec room in his mother's basement. He's a lethally snitty man-baby who takes credit for women's work: it's later revealed that his master plan and much of his tech are taken from a book Erin wrote years ago but disavowed because the university system doesn't believe in the paranormal.
Near the end of the film, the dead Rowan pours himself into Kevin and is pleased to look in the mirror and see that his face and body finally match up with his self-image. He marvels at what it feels like to finally have abs instead of a flabby belly, and laughs that if he'd known how good it would feel to lift heavy things without help, he would've gone to the gym more.
I liked the movie. Fun summer blockbuster and really hoping for a sequel. I'd give it a 7/10 personally. Loved the look of the proton packs firing and the focus on the start up business was great.
Just got back from seeing it. It was ok. The comedy was just very slapstick and not the dry humor of the original which just resonated with me much more. It was an alright film with a few funny moments but overall it just didn't 'feel' like a Ghostbusters movie to me. I also wasn't fond of the Scooby-Doo looking ghosts and the stories main villain was just ho-hum.
I liked Holtzman's wackiness and the gear was cool. It was a fun movie but didn't really have the same tone or comedy as the original or the sequel. I did like the after credits scene. The movie really did have a crap script, what saves it from being a total let down for me was the great actors and Hemsworth was delightful.
LOVED IT. Plot wasn't as strong as the original (mostly because of the main villain, but
possessed Chris Hemsworth was great
). Everything else was spot on!
There were a family that took up most of a row at the showing my wife and I were at and after the movie it was super heart warming to overhear three generations of Ghostbusters nerds talking about how much fun they had afterwards.
