So we have moved past dismissing those that hate the new film to retro actively saying the original film was garbage and totally overrated? Gotcha.

I had fun the entire time watching the movie. There was definitely premature overreaction on the hate pre-release.

In 6 months it'll come full circle and everyone will hate Ghostbusters 2016 the way they hate Jurassic World.

Also, Rick Moranis is the worst thing ever in this movie, holy shit.

When I was thinking about the original movie, that came to mind.

And I say that as a Canadian.

Huh? Who said it was garbage? Old film was good, I just didn't like Rick Moranis in it. Also think it's got this weird feel to it, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

lol, that whole subplot is an example of what I'm talking about. He and Weaver's character are possessed by demon dogs and forced to bone each other... I did NOT think that's where things were going when I started watching haha.

Just got back. That was fantastic. It actually might be up there with the original for me.

I will post more tomorrow but I loved it.

So I haven't watched the Original Ghostbusters films yet (treason, I know). Are there any references that would be lost on me if I see this first?

Yeah. I think there are a lot. Not sure if it would affect your overall enjoyment of the film but you would be missing something.

Yes, each Cameo has a slight reference. There are some parallels between the films and the reboot. But everything can be enjoyed without knowing anything.

I saw it last night and thought it was great. It was basically what I hoped for when I first heard the news there was going to be a women-led cast (and then they added Hemsworth too!). I hope to see it again with a friend in the near future.

I didn't laugh at all the jokes, but I laughed enough to consider the movie entertaining. I don't have the same fondness for the original as a lot of others do because I associate it with an early childhood nightmare of Slimer trying to bite my arm off.

Anyway, I think the all the actresses did great, especially Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. I hope the movie does well and if there is a sequel, I am definitely interested in that too.

Ghostbusters works as a remake, mostly because it's pretty much exactly on par with the first movie. They're both relatively fun paranormal comedies with a couple of standout performances that are pretty forgettable overall. This go-around, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth steal the show, constantly giving laughs in their profound silliness. McKinnon also gets a few chances to be really cool as a role model for kids watching it, and she captures the scientific venture aspect of Ghostbusters perfectly. Everything else just hits the "alright" scale with a few laughs here and there, either for the other members of the Ghostbusters, Cicily Strong, or the cameos that pop up here and there. The biggest disappointment belongs to Neil Casey's villain, who is outright forgettable and often annoying when he's on screen. It's a decent time at the theater where one wouldn't mind a sequel to the blockbuster, but if it's one-off, that's fine too. Ghostbusters is fun as a summer movie, but ultimately won't leave much of an impression in moviegoers' minds.

I thought I was going to hate this movie but I loved it. Haven't laughed this much in a movie in a long time. Chris Hemsworth stole every scene. I hope it does well, it deserves it.

Just got out of an IMAX 3D showing with the fiancée. What a fun, great, funny movie that was. The audience was losing it every 30 seconds and the 3D effect was great.

The movie didn't itself seriously, it was colorful, the actresses were having a good time and it was a great popcorn flick.

Check it out. God I hope we get a sequel.

What a movie. The wife and me loved it. Funny, great ghost designs and lots of them, well paced, never boring, good cameos, and just fun. Fits well with the other movies imo.

Good to great movie. I gladly eat any crow that I had being skeptical.

Kate absolutely stole the movie for me. Loved every scene she was in. She is probably my favorite GB character (and I loved the originals)

Yep.

She's my fav GBer now and forever.

Slaaaaaaayed it.

The cameos will mean fuck all to ya.

But I actually think having nothing to instinctively compare it to will do ya good as nothing in it makes the original and especially not GB II required viewing

God as I'm sitting here thinking about it all I can think is that i want to see it again...but those tickets aint cheap...fuck.

I know what ya mean. I had a free ticket the first time I saw so I saw it again in 3D tonight.

Seeing it in IMAX tomorrow because fuck it.

I can't wait for this to be on blu ray.

Going to try to sum up my thoughts without getting TOO rambley (is that a word)?

I liked the film. I liked it a lot. This movie was good. If I say I'm a touch disappointed, it's not because I didn't like what I saw, but because I think I could have liked it even more. But anyways...let's go

The cast has great chemistry and all feel natural together. The special effects are FANTASTIC. The ghosts are at the same time somewhat cartoony, but incredibly...unnerving? Like something your brain would cook up in a nightmare as a kid but not something you expect to ever manifest in a real world. I adored the designs.

The movie was definitely funny. The stuff from the trailers was my least favourite, and while there were a lot of great gags the best stuff just comes from the interactions between everyone and a lot of blink-and-you'll miss it moments (mostly from Kate, who is just perfection here). Mostly, my joy watching this movie just comes with how earnest it feels, every one of the main characters is likeable in their own way and it has a great amount of respect for the original film, something I don't think was actually necessary since I don't think a new thing needs to be beholden to something that came before, but it's certainly appreciated and admirable. The cameos were shockingly well done. Aside from one, they're all incredibly brief and none of them really felt out of place. I honestly can't believe this was such a common complaint.

Next, the movie is efficient as hell. There's no lulls, nothing feels too rushed (except maaaaybe the start of the last sequence), and it has a great flow and balance between action, humour and character moments. On that topic, the movie is maybe TOO fast. I really would have loved to get more scenes of just the 4 of them like, hanging out eating some dinner and shooting the shit. It takes a while for everyone to meet up and then they're pretty much sent straight out to save the day.

And circling back to my opening remarks, I only mention the notion of disappointment because one gets the sense that this version of Ghostbusters, if let loose without the shackles of being both a reboot and tribute to the past, could be something WEIRD and CRAZY and even BETTER. Maybe a sequel? Please?

But yeah, I have no idea how Feig pulled it off but this feels familiar and fresh in all the right ways. A solid 8/10 from me.

Really liked it.

One thing I thought was great was to see them develop the equipment. The test in the subway was great, and was really a beat they missed in the original. Glad they touched on it here.

Really funny. Good time.

Is it really bad if I say I actually didn't hate the new theme, as it was presented in the movie?

Obviously it can't hold a candle to the original but I thought it worked well enough with how it was used.

Just saw it.

3/5 for a movie.
2/5 for a Ghostbusters movie.
4/5 for the comedy.
4/5 for the throwbacks.
3/5 for the action.

The movie will be great for the new generation who didn't grow up with the other Ghostbusters. I liked some moments in the movie, but it was just too much comedy for me. All in all, more enjoyable than the trailer portrayed it to be.

They used all the good parts of it. And mixed it low and featured mostly Missy.

Hell it's not even the new theme. It's just a version.

Wow, suprised at all the positive impressions... i haven't seen it yet and just checked IMDB to find out it actually has a... 4.5 score WTF??? I mean, that is ABYSMAL :(

Surprised at just HOW far apart opinions can be in this case. I will still give it a watch though after that many positive reviews here!

IMDB is not a good representation for positive impressions. Batman V Superman had a relatively high rating before anyone had seen that movie. The majority of the low ratings come from exactly who you'd think would give them out.

I didn't like it. Sorry to say. Pacing felt a little off to me. Some jokes were funny but most of it felt forced. Don't understand many of the other parts. Felt more as a "do it for the sake off" kinda movie than a "lets be take this serious" kind of movie.

Assholes are flooding IMDB the same way they flooded youtube.

Saw it with some friends this evening and we enjoyed it. I hope it does well enough to get a sequel where they can do their own thing and not have to have all the cameos and whatnot.

I think the major problem with the movie is actually the editing, how they let certain scenes ramble without cutting back. That was my major problem with it. Luckily it didn't ruin anything for me, but several scenes needed some dialing back.

So, that was an enjoyable film.

The first two acts were great. Building the team worked and they all have great chemistry. Even Kevin.

My biggest issues:

Rowan, who was a poor villain with a weak motivation. I feel like the film almost actively forgot about him most of the time.

That third act. Once the movie kick up in blockbuster territory, I think Feig gets outside of his comfort zone. The scenes look cool, but they're edited together poorly and lack meaningful character beats until the end. It feels like there's more footage there that was left on the cutting room floor. Once the action really kicks in it's a bit off.

My nitpick:

Erin herself needed a bit more meat. I guess I just wanted a stronger hook to her. For example, Erin's story about the ghost was never referenced again. I expected that to come up again, but it never does. She didn't leave me cold, but I wanted more?

I liked it, I laughed, and this is one of those films that I think needs a sequel, so it can dispense with origin story stuff can really get into the meat. I find when this blazed it's own trail - the ley line lore, the government's handling of ghosts, the additional gadgets - it was a better film. A couple of tweaks, like fewer references to the original and a much better villain, would make a great sequel.

Saw it again, this time with my family. The theater was almost full, and the audience was laughing the whole time. They even fucking cheered and applauded when Ernie Hudson's cameo happened. When the movie ended, the theater erupted in applause. The only bad experiences were that somewhere behind me a couple of people were like hate-watching it (I can't imagine actually spending money just to hate-watch something) and making snide remarks, and then towards the end a little girl in the front of the theater started getting freaked out and yelling/verge of crying. Poor kid. ):

I actually really like the villain and wish he had gotten more screen time and fleshed out better. The
lay lines
thing is fuckin awesome and it's really cool to have a bad guy that's
basically a reverse version of the Ghostbusters.
Plus he's that super creepy kind of weird hateful person.

I want a sequel so bad. SO bad. I love all the characters even more after seeing it again. Chris Helmsworth plays what is possibly my favorite stupid person of all time and after spending more time with Holtzman I really like her. Her speech at the end is so touching and good and really endears her character to me a lot.

Movie sucked, but the IMAX 3D effects were awesome. Dug how the special effects extended beyond the screen
I didn't notice this and thought maybe it was because it wasn't regular 3D as people expect the whole screen in imax.

And when I say "didn't notice", I mean I actively looked for that feature since it sounded like a cool idea.

The wife and I just got back from our screening here in Taipei. This was one very enjoyable flick. Just a light, breezy time at the cinema. I laughed a lot, enjoyed the characters (this cast has some amazing chemistry), and thought the action was exciting enough to keep things moving. It works as it's own interpretation of the concept, not as a direct remake of the original. This is a VERY different film from the original, in terms of tone, camerawork, editing, and pacing while delivering it's own brand of comedy. In fact, my major gripes with the movie come from the editing; there are some really jumpy cuts and some awkward shots that take me out of things a bit and make me wonder what's actually happening in certain scenes/moments.

Bonus points to Andy Garcia having one of the funniest moments in the film. (
Jaws Mayor
) He really sold that bit.

Also, our audience was a very nice mix of demographics/ages. Young kids (10 year olds) with their parents, teens, 20-30 something couples, and adults. Theatre got pretty loud with laughter. You look around at the people in the theatre and realize how oblivious they are to any of the bullshit hate that was leveled at this movie...they were just there to see a funny film. And judging from how often the theatre erupted in laughter, they got what they paid for.

Just saw it. It was a very entertaining film.

However, like the original Ghostbusters, there were moments where it was just too geek-out for me. I really dislike it when the Ghostbusters went on and on about proton this, meta-physical that. I don't understand what the fuck they're talking about. Am I suppose to laugh at their geekiness? At least in this one they cut down the lingo babble to a minimum.

The standouts were Kevin, Patty, and to an extent, Holtz when she was being cool in the last third of the film. I actually don't get when people say that the first act was the best because I found it to be a bit dull until Kevin and Patty enter the film in the 2nd act. Then the film kicked into high gear in both comedy and action. The chemistry between the cast also starts to gell a lot more at that point. I also like the villain of the piece and how he was worked into the final act of the film.

I'm not fond of the design of the majority of the Ghosts until the third act of the film where more variety started to be included. On the plus side, the film had some genuinely creepy moments. It makes me wonder if a more serious and scary Ghostbusters would work.

Also, this film has the most entertaining end credit. I couldn't believe I stick out until the very end. You have to stay until
Kevin's Ghostbusters dance
at the very least. Didn't know
Hemsworth is a talented dancer.
.

All in all, I had fun watching it and made me wish I had gone for a 3D session to see if some of the interesting scenes leap out of the screen.

I think at least for me a serious Ghostbusters film wouldn't work very well. Proton Packs and wrangling ghosts are a little too goofy looking for me to take seriously. They work in the context of a comedy horror movie but I can't really picture them in a serious horror movie, y'know?

That said the originals did have some scary creepy stuff in it. To this day I still can't bring myself to watch the zombie head scene in Ghostbusters II.

Oh shit, no wonder Get Ghost is so funky and badass, that's the track Mark Ronson (Uptown Funk) did.

Walk the Moon's Ghostbusters them and Get Ghost are absolutely the best tracks from this movie.
