Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Reveal Trailer (4v1 MP game from Friday the 13th/Predator Hunting Grounds dev)

Illfonic's asymmetric multiplayer foray into Ghostbusters correctly understands that the essence of the original film is very, very silly. Previewed by Rebekah Valentine. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be released in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S.

The Ghostbusters are back in town and will soon be featured in a new asymmetrical multiplayer game from IllFonic, the development studio behind Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds. In an exclusive new look at the studio's forthcoming Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, we see four proton packs charge up and ignite against a purple Slimer-like ghost with far too many eyes. This battle unfolds within a prison setting that IlllFonic felt was a must for this game.

Pre-orders are available now at retailers, and digital pre-orders will open on August 18. Digital pre-orders include Advance Access to Slimer, a Custom Particle Thrower and Proton Pack, and special clothing colorways.

"The reaction from fans of Ghostbusters has blown us away," said IllFonic CEO Charles Brungardt in a press release. "Putting a date on and opening up preorders for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed feels like an out of body experience, and we cannot wait for everyone to feel the same sensation on Tuesday, October 18."

Posters think the Friday the 13th game is shit? I enjoyed the game but it was hampered by copyright feud over the Jason/Friday the 13th IP that ended its continued support. It wasn't shit
Wasn't it jank city though. I was gonna try but watched a game and was like nthanks ls

Don't pre-order this garbage, people.

If it releases with positive reviews and isn't a janky mess at launch, go for it...but these guys have a questionable track record.

Friday the 13th bombed. Then Predator bombed. Now they're back with another sure fire dud in a crowded market of games made by better developers.

Can this be played solo? Anybody know?
"These types of games are usually best played online with friends, but Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will also offer the option for a single-player mode, with AI bots filling out the other roles. Players will have the option to play both online or offline as well."

Check out this exclusive first look at the Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed character creation system, captured at Tokyo Game Show 2022. From adjusting body type and voice to choosing outfits and accessories, here's a good look at what's on offer in the upcoming proton pack-wielding, asymmetrical multiplayer game's character creator.

Perfect time to finish my hand made proton pack lol

What a waste of a game, easily could have been a L4D clone with that stupid asymmetric shit thrown in for the sadists.

So this gets released on tuesday. I pre-ordered the digital version on PS4. I liked how the trailers looked and Predator: Hunting Grounds is great so I'm excited.

I wish these guys would stop making the same game over and over, they are just wasting some of the best movie franchises on mediocre games. Don't get me wrong, F13 was fun for a dozen hours or so...but it's about as deep as a puddle.

I guess that's one way to see it, but Ghostbusters have had no shortage of games over the years (this is one of two new GB games I know of), and then the rest of these franchises had little to no hope of having mainstream games (and even less chance of those mainstream games not being mediocre if they had been made as traditional single-player action or whatever games) made of them despite being among the best around. It takes the potential money-making possibility of a multiplayer game to make these brand holders take a meeting.

Also, Ghostbusters is at least its own audience who may be new to or underserved by this genre. Kids who want to play Ghostbusters together are unlikely to have been killed in a round of F13 or Predator before getting into this one...

It's a weak sub-genre is my main problem with all of this. All of these games feel like the multiplayer component to a bigger, better game.

Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Killer Clowns From Outer Space...these are licenses that can be had for a song, and I suspect this is exactly why they are making these re-skinned Dead By Daylight cash grabs. Take the Texas Chainsaw Massacre license for example, Kim Henkel, the rights holder, will sign off on pretty much anything. I have ZERO doubt a studio like SuperMassive Games could make an actual good game out of that, but here we are.

It's borderline exploitative of horror fans, but I'm not trying to push that narrative as I know how it sounds...but it's certainly barking up that tree, especially when you realize they're all made by the same two affiliated studios, save for Evil Dead, that one is a clone of those, and ironically, is much better. Killer Klowns is also another clone, I believe.

There are about five or six of these games by these guys(Illfonic/Gun Media) already. Ghostbusters, F13, and Predator probably have a much more expensive license attached though. And I agree with the majority of your assessment, but I think Ghostbusters is the outlier here.

Aso, Ghostbusters is at least its own audience who may be new to or underserved by this genre. Kids who want to play Ghostbusters together are unlikely to have been killed in a round of F13 or Predator before getting into this one...
Most Ghostbusters fans are probably adults so many might have played the previous games.

One way to ensure your game has no audience on PC :

Make it an EGS exclusive.
No lies there, but they must be getting decent EGS money cause this is the third title they've done this with. 🤷‍♂️

I bit and got this and plan on playing soon. Just watched a few people play it and they said it was "pretty fun", but who knows, lol.

Are these the same people making that Killer Klowns game?
Nah, that's Teravision.

Got a review key last night, played a few matches. Most of them were empty lobbies filled with bots. In order for you to have (just like most 1v4 mp titles) you need to have a full crew.

The mechanics and idea are interesting but I felt bored after about 6 or so matches. Multiplayer games like these are a bit hard to rate due to requirement of having a full dedicated group.

I'd say skip this one if I am being honest, you have a crew od people you play games with on consistent basis. The game runs well though, looks good and doesn't have any weird technical issue or annoying bugs that I ran into.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is a fun, multiplayer game perfect for all skill levels. Four proton pack wielding Ghostbusters attempt to catch a Ghost haunting unique locations in asymmetrical multiplayer battles (online or offline). As players progress, they will unlock cosmetics and upgrades for both Ghostbusters and Ghosts to evolve their gameplay experiences.

This looks like one of those under the radar gems. Played for about an hour and had a blast.

Will share more impressions later.

This has been fun. I like the gameplay and its easy to find matches on PS4. How do I get to play as a ghost? I got to to play as ghost in one match but it hasn't happened after that.

Friday the 13th was successful but eventually lost their player base due to a copyright issue that prevented them from releasing any updates/new maps for the game.

Top left hand side of the screen shows what you are queuing up for. On xbox its dpad down to change your preference.

The story was really short. I didn't expect it to end so soon. I was suprised when I got the trophy because I thought it would continue. They should have made the story much longer.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed reviewed by Travis Northup on Xbox Series X, also available on PlayStation and PC.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is an entertaining asymmetrical multiplayer game that's held back by some probably-fixable balance issues and map wonkiness, but it badly needs more content.

I'm tempted to pick this up (Xbox) is it easy to get games?
It was really easy for a long while, haven't tried recently though.

I've really enjoyed the game. It may be lacking in the content department for some, but for folks that ever loved the IP at any point in your life, you'll enjoy it.
