GI.biz Op-Ed: Titanfall 2 a "commercial failure," "a victim of chest-beating pride."

It still baffles me to no end how Respawn locked themselves into Origin exclusivity despite not being owned by EA. Steam would have helped for sure, despite it being the home and field of CoD.

So...it's okay to shit on other releases because you need to justify your own purchases?

I pre-ordered & bought TF2.

Infinite Warfare is at 12k players on Steam, so I don't know if I'd call it their "home and field."

I told a friend of mine that EA absolutely fucked this game. He told me no they did nothing wrong and that quality would do well over time. I wish I wasn't so right about this.

I mean yeah, I totally would have bought TitanFall 2 at full price in February, especially after hearing how good the single player is. I just can't justify it right now with all the other games I've bought and preordered. The fall is a shitty gamble to make these days.

*waiting for EA access vault*

I suspect others are doing the same. I'm sure this sort of rental service hurts game sales eventually.

I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you. EA can toss games on that service because the games they post are both published and developed by EA. Respawn is not owned by EA, they're an independent developer that has a publishing agreement with EA. For Titanfall 2 to go up on that service, EA is going to have to come to some sort of agreement with Respawn that involves EA paying Respawn for the right to do that.

They have plenty of games they can put up there at no cost, so paying Respawn to add Titanfall 2 is probably not high on their priority list.

Titanfall 1 went on there, but went up like 1.5 to 2 years after release, well after the sales on that game had been expended. Hell, they'd sold the game for like $5 before they did Origin Access.

Studio performance evaluations are made partly on sales, no? West and Zampella's creative freedom is contingent on the success of their projects. If their game flops, EA has an excuse (maybe a codified one) to exercise more control over Respawn.

This isn't a Bioware situation. EA doesn't own or control Respawn. Their freedom does depend on the success of their projects, but only insofar as if their game doesn't sell they won't be able to afford to run the studio.

EA could try to exercise some control in the case of a flop if the studio needs a new contract to keep the studio alive, but they'd have to do so in competition with other offers that might come from other publishers.

I want TF2, but my plate is pretty full with Civ VI and Overwatch right now. I might get in on Battlefield 1 a bit too.

TF2 sounds like it would've been a perfect March title for me. It still might be at a discounted price to boot, actually.

Either March or why not take Halo's spot this year and release it in late September before all the big Fall titles?

My uninformed bet is EA didn't want to release it before BF1 because they're more invested in BF than TF and were worried about the latter cannibalizing the sales of the former.

Why? I don't owe Respawn or EA anything. I'm hoping it does poorly enough to go on clearance so I can save money.

Sorry I didn't pre-order the deluxe edition blindly

It's an amazing game that deserves a lot better. I didn't even like the first Titanfall but this one has me hooked completely - the campaign and more importantly, the multiplayer.

The game is fantastic but EA screwed them over by launching it between two huge titles. It was clear it could not compete, they basically sent it to die.

Buy this game people.

I bought gow4 and bf1, and while I love both, since getting tf2 I haven't touched the other two for oover a week

Tf2 has the most fluid and satisfying gunplay I've played with in years and the new Titans are amazing

I'm glad it's a great game. It doesn't change the fact that I want to save money on it, allowing me to buy other great games as well.

It's an uphill battle after a Xbox-exclusive game with MP only to suddenly try to change the perception of the brand and product to be marketable to PS4 and PC players who are also interested in singleplayer.

This. I don't think lots of people put a lot of attention to TF2, some because they are PS4 owner who just knew the IP as some other console game, others because they knew it because they heard it didn't have a campaign.

And not everyone is so well informed as in GAF to know that TF2 changed both things. Add to that EA pushing more BF1 than TF2 because it's their own game instead of a third party publishing deal (I'm sure they win more with a BF1 copy than a TF2 copy), and you have this result.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Only it wasn't shallow. Particularly after the expansions hit.

That doesn't matter. The damage was done at launch. First impressions count. Player base didn't come back even after they added co-op... what... a year(!?) later?

Titanfall 1 was a great game. I sunk a TON of hours into it. Unfortunately I didn't care for the Titanfall 2 tech test. I think that was a big mistake for the state the game was in. Sounds like it's better now, but... I didn't like it then and I'm so into Overwatch and R6: Siege that I'm just taking a pass now. If I hadn't played the tech test I probably would have preordered it because of my love for Titanfall 1... Shrug.

And yeah, EA really screwed it releasing right next to Battlefield, Call of Duty etc.

not guaranteed you'd like the full MP game if you disliked the tech test, game is fundamentally the same albeit with some minor tweaks / improvements.

pilot movement feels a touch better, titans get called in faster, but it's still not the TF1 you know and love.

i'm quite vocal about my distaste for TF2's multiplayer [just feels like COD w/ mechs to me], but i still bought the game as a show of support for Respawn.

really gutted to hear it's not doing so well right now, hopefully things pick up.

also been hard to even "get used" to the game's MP for me as, on PC at least, people don't seem to be playing anything other than a few modes.
