Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I have no problem with Dan Ryckert but it really does feel like Giant Bomb has a fifth flavor of chocolate with him.

Very few people are trying to insinutate that GB crew were intentionally excluding people in their selection. It is more that the idea of trying to find someone would is most like and "gels" best with the rest of the crew is a very conservative decision that not only denies other an opportunity but also robs the audience of a lot of possibly cool new voices,

Also very vew people were as agressive or defesensive at disagreeing with that statements.

But the vicious cycle...

The shitty thing is, there is no way in hell they hire a white male for their next job opening.

Not shitty in that it should be a white male or that I don't want it to be anything else, but shitty in a "but is this how you want to make things change?" kind of way.

I'd love more diversity too, but I don't want "pity" or "obligation" hires. And now if any woman gets hired at GB that's automatically gonna be an assumption because of this kind of outrage, valid or not.

They've hired three people in the last four years? I doubt they'll be hiring anyone else in the near future. Polygon probably replaces that many people on a yearly basis.

Games journalism is not a technical field. What is the gender ratio in other forms of journalism likes sports writing? Are you equally upset about gender imbalances there? If not, why?
You know, I almost clarified that in case you missed the forest for the trees but figured the point would be apparent. My mistake. To clarify: I was speaking broadly, given that issues of minority representation are a big problem for technical fields, of which the gaming industry mirrors likely due to it's roots in an engineering-heavy profession.

Oh, and the games media covering it has traditionally been dominated by white males.

As for your question, sorry, but I'm not playing that game. Not only because you're framing it in a way I'm not arguing (imbalance implying I want a 50/50 ssplit instead of just more representation), but because it's some purpose is to shut down the conversation. If I say yes, then you'll drag me down a fucking rabbit hole of logic about how women don't like sports like games so obviously more of them is pointless because they don't want to be here; and if I say no, well, my point loses all merit because I don't want all representation equally. So no, I'm not playing this game.

Edit: oh look, I was right. Imagine my surprise.

That gender disparities in industries are presented as being mainly the result of institutionalized sexism if men are the majority, but not if women are the majority.
Do you think women are purposely excluding men from those fields? Do you think men are more afraid to be nurses because of what women would say or because of what men would say?

its playability hinges squarely and mundanely on just how gamelike it is

She writes pseudo-intellectual trash. Top to bottom, mind-numbing trash. The Giant Bomb crew provide forgettable standard game journo material outside their entertaining media efforts, but it doesn't hurt the brain. Her writing, the essence of her fame, is far worse than the embarrassing and excruciating bombcast appearances she can never live down and feels bitter about to this day, although they compliment each other nicely.

i like your writing lol.

It's funny you mention women-"dominated" fields.

Even in "women's" jobs, men earn more. So, yeah, maybe there's a problem with sexism. But I know, "best qualified" because there's such obvious qualifications to BS about video games.

I love the sentiment than anyone could do what Jeff or Vinny or Brad do just as well as them and they don't really have any special skills. I just love it.

Yes, they talk good in front of the cameras. But, look at even GB videos and they're all much better now than then and even back then, they weren't horrible. Add in that the possible hires bandied about weren't exactly totally unwilling to go on camera, and this idea that Rycket (as much as I'll love have more wrestling jokes on the Bombcast) is miles above any possible woman candidate is kind of silly.

I think one thing is ignore a "toxic" part that should actually being analyzed... to feeling that both parts have been acting like entilted pricks.

Right here.

No he said there is no "obvious" qualification. It's not like exactly brick laying or some other job where there is a clear objective competency bar to be reached. And especially with a site like GB it boils down to much more abstract categories like who would "gel" best or "be a best fit for the site," which are subjective qualifiers.

I don't know who said he was "miles" above any other candidate, women or otherwise. But is there any known applicant who has a catalog of videogame video content anywhere close to what Ryckert produced at GI?

I read it more as a commentary on how poor the "best qualified" arguments are in the face of gender income disparity than a true slam against GB for their talent.

Bingo. Dan may be the most talented. But, this isn't exactly a factory job. Whose the most qualified is kind of a weird thing to ask.

But, let me put it this way. If say, Andrew Gallegos got hired to be part of Polygon, would nobody assume part of the reason was that he's close friends with Arthur Gies? Of course not. So, the idea that, hey, the most qualified guy happened to be the guy that Jeff has spent the past year having a silly wrestling podcast with is kind of stretching it.

If Giantbomb had hired somebody they didn't know or had no close relationship with, it'd make the "most qualified" line a little more palatable.

You are hiring basically an on-screen personality. So being compatible and being able to mesh well with the other on-screen personalities is one of, if not the most important qualifications. In that sense, Dan is far and away the best choice.

Patrick was pretty awkward with the other personalities when he was first hired. Somehow, the site survived.
