Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Whether she should be discredited is completely beside the point. She may very well be crazy or an idiot; that doesn't excuse people sending anyone death or rape threats, ever. People are going 'she was rude to that guy', but without even considering what sort of hatred barrage she was under.

Totally agree. Nothing can excuse the vile shit some people have written on Twitter, in that Reddit thread etc. These discussions always seem to og to absolute shit, and I would absolutely hate to be one of the public people who fights for equality on the internet. I would break down after the first day of abuse. I'm happy Someone's willing to do it, but my god you have to have a thick skin...

I might be unfairly generalizing the GB Community here, but in my experience there, the overall tone is:

1) All the GB guys are great and everything they do is great (this is to be expected for a forum on a site)
2) Anything goes as long as it's funny

Which is, you know, fair. GB is a comedy site. But I think people are taking those things to extreme ends and maybe it's time for the community's culture to change. Some of those things can be said about this thread sometimes, too.

I sometimes wonder if we're reading the same thread. There are content quality complaints and discussions all the time about their attitudes.

The wagon circling seems to happen when 'outsiders' attack the intentions of the GB staff. And in a way, that's to be expected due to how open Giant Bomb is compared to a lot of sites. While we don't know everything about their personal lives, we know when things are rough for them, we know when corporate is being cunty, we know when they're understaffed and overworked, and we know how seldom there is good news.

All of this information builds a more sympathetic picture of the site, so when this 'outsider' comes along with critique, people probably feel they're judging GB without having a complete picture of a site that has struggled to survive and we should be grateful still exists.

Yeah, the people threatening her like that are the absolute scum of the Internet. Misogynistic/transphobic slurs and threats are never okay.

Man, the shit that some of these women got on Twitter is unacceptable, but it doesn't give them carte blanche to say disrespectful and stupid shit like that.

edit: I don't envy any public figure active on the Internet. In fact, if I were a public figure, I'd be like Cillian Murphy: discreet and reserved. I could not deal with any such drama.

I know and that fucking sucks that there can't be a conversation like this on the Internet without slurs and death threats.

Agreed...also it seems extremist point of views are driving the conversations now, not just online, but in politics, news and everything.. while I believe that the high majority is in the middle and moderate is getting dragged to have to go to one of the bs extremes.

Also, twitter is def not the correct platform for this at all. Maybe scoops can do a hangout panel with a few of the women and try to get their point across in a more civilized manner because I think it would be interesting, but it would probably backfire with all the assholes out there.

Also leigh should know by now that only Patrick really writes stuff on GB, is all video form really.

I've had a busy day at work so just catching up on this, but I wish I'd just missed it altogether. People just can't help themselves on the internet, everything's got to be provocative no matter the angle to break through the noise.

I'm just glad they've hired two accomplished and enthusiastic staff members right when they need it most. There will be more hires down the line if the site keeps growing and regardless who they are everyone is welcome to the party if they find Giant Bomb funny and/or insightful. Any underlying nastiness and bitterness from critics or fans just makes me sad for what's otherwise a very positive development for a cool website.

I am trying my best to not let the whole explosion get to me. As long as giant bomb continues to provide what I am looking for...maniacs playing video games and engaging in tomfoolery for my amusement.

If I wanted engaging social discourse, I would never think to try giantbomb.

At this point it's not about giant bomb anymore. Giant Bomb was the spark to start the battle. Everyone already had a inkling to go to war in the back of their heads, they just need a concrete reason.

"Let's just make sure the best person gets hired! ***EVERYONE*** should be treated equally, no matter their traits! But also, let's make sure we definitely don't do anything to fight against the structures that marginalize minorities."

Those tweets don't even begin to compare to the wave of toxic waste that so predictably comes whenever these issues are highlighted. This situation is so incredibly depressing.

Sometimes I wonder who those kind of people are. There's accounts on Twitter that only have posts directed directly at Patrick with vile abuse, and I'm sure that's normal on the internet. Every time a games writer write an article about social issues, the "MRA crowd" come out of the woodwork with absolutely disgusting shit on Twitter. The worst thing is that it seems to be effective at derailing conversations about these subjects. Just look at how this have buried any legitimate point in this conversation. Now it's not about GB anymore, but about MRAs pissing over everything and everyone. How Reddit especially give these fuckers such a platform is beyond me It's fucking depressive...

Haha, understandable. I've just never felt the site to have much of a viewpoint on political/social matters, there are much more qualified people around for that material(maybe not regarding games). I like everything they do on the site, it appeals to my inner kid.

Seriously. I'm weirded out by how weirded out people are by the implication that a son would have seen his father naked.

Yeah, to this day I can't help but think that the people who find Brad's zinger so SHOCKING are actually the ones who are really fucked up. His comment to Vinny never crossed my mind as anything sexual, as it sounds completely normal to me that a super little kid like that would have seen his dad naked in the shower or whatever. I'm an American young adult too, so I'm not sure it's a cultural thing.

This is completely off-topic from the current conversations in the thread, but does anyone have the link to that list of Jeff's favorite games that was posted a while back?

So it's like WWI. I get it now.

I really really really didn't want that to sound like I am justifying rape or death threats. I meant that it might just make her argument invalid to people who might've listened otherwise. Obviously death and rape threats are never justified.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I'm just highlighting what I think is most important. I actually think she point she had to make wasn't really great, given the realpolitik of GB, but regardless, she has the right to make it.

Just to be clear, I think she deserve be discredited. Not be accused or harassed. But that Missandry post felt beyond that, and more like outright misanthropy.

Modern day missandry is a really complex concept that is based on years of systematic oppression and violence than hating every guy you know. It's a really big thing that I don't know enough about one way or another but I don't think it means she isn't allowed to have an opinion.

No problem, that makes sense. I just wanted to clarify my original post :)

Then she presented it incredibly poorly.

Also, I'm not sure why it's so shocking to people that some GB "fans" have been so shitty and subhuman over the last couple days. These are probably the same sorts of people who told Patrick that he should have died instead of Ryan. I guess nothing really surprises me anymore on the internet, but it really is a shame.

They really never should have publicized and hyped up the whole "We're hiring two new people!" thing. Hundreds or thousands of fans were likely to apply, get their hopes up, and then be crushed when the job went to people with more demonstrable experience and talent. They were never just going to pick some random person - it was destined to be an established professional.

If they had just suddenly and randomly added a couple new people rather than making an event out of it, the gender/race issues probably would have been ignored as well. Instead they turned it into American Idol or Doctor Who, and put themselves in a situation where whoever they hired was going to be very heavily scrutinized.

EDIT: for better clarity

I don't know what you're getting at here. Like legitimately

she can have an opinion. it doesn't mean it's a morally correct one. she can, and has, said that are both true and need to be said. but that doesn't disqualify her from being open to criticism on other past statements or opinions. it's not "an attack on an opinionated woman". http://unpitchable.tumblr.com/post/79931857273/what-misandry-means-to-me

sorry, i guess i don't write as eloquently as i thought.

but i don't wanna change the focus back on this anymore, the other thread got closed for it.

I think is a dangerous line of thinking to try justify given that she admits the word "hate" in her definition.

Absolutely, but it's completely understandable nonetheless

But mostly not justificable in the end.

Jeff's going on GameOverGreggy tonight. Wonder what he'll talk about?

ysiQAd6.png

Awesome. I had a feeling this would happen eventually. I also think it would be cool, but unlikely, if they could get Jimmy Fallon. Greg's former co-worker, Mike Drucker (he used to work at IGN and write for Greg's Up At Noon) is currently a writer on The Tonight Show. That would be a pretty major get, if they could ever pull it off.

I can't help but wonder how Patrick is dealing with all of this. He's been so proactive in defending women and/or minorities on the internet. Now the company he works for is right in the center of a controversy about what he is so proudly against.

Unfortunately it seems they're now in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation in regards to their next hire. But then again I imagine they had to see this coming when they decided to hire two more white males. Especially in today's social climate.

As a straight, white male it's times like this when I question my own thoughts on women and minorities. I don't consider myself the slightest bit racist or sexist but when they announced the new hires the thought of them being white males never even registered. According to the internet a red flag was supposed to go off in my head, but it didn't. It definitely makes me question some things about how I perceive less represented groups of individuals.

Idle Thumbs benefits a lot from having Danielle Riendeau on semi-regularly.

Ryan's spin on Thumbs was championship. Thanks, Ryan.
