Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

The way Vinny always looks up towards the ceiling when talking to Jimmy bothers me.

He's using a boom mic to capture his voice for the game, so it's just him trying to get the best possible accuracy. Which really didn't help much.

I wonder if using the headset would've actually helped at all.

IT'S THIS SUMMER'S HOTTEST NEW COMEDY!

I haven't busted a gut laughing like that since the Second Life segment, I could barely breathe. Holy shit, what an amazing video. I hope he keeps torturing himself with this blessed game.

A GAF member is on the dev team for the game. I got to play it at PAX East earlier this year. The voice controls work well.
If only Feep would make "put down the pepper grinder" a secret voice command.

I'm listening to the latest podcast (July 8) and I'm at the point where they're talking about Wolfenstein: TNO and I just can't help but feel like Jeff is just way overthinking that game and some of the game mechanics. He keeps bringing up how he has to plan out how he's going to approach a fight just to level up the perk stuff and everything.

He's only a chapter in (so he says), so hopefully he stopped trying to overthink that system and just let it all come naturally. He's going to end up with a largely negative feeling on that game if he keeps up that sort of mentality.

I also hope he doesn't follow Dan's advice of dropping the game down to the easiest difficulty. That's just madness.

The fact that Patrick said he likes how Vox has been covering news makes me shake my head so damn hard. Vox is terrible. Vox is the last place you should look for worthwhile content. Explainer journalism and the "view from nowhere" are just as annoying to me as any sort of listicle.

Yeah, if Patrick is planning on doing titles like that from now on it's a bad idea. A title should be treated as a succinct summary of the article, not a hook for the reader. The latter is a style of writing that is really unappealing to me, let the story speak for itself. I'd be visiting gamesradar or its ilk if I wanted to be treated like a catch. Patrick's previous titles suited him just fine.

I am not the only person noticing Patrick being click bait-y with his stories?

Seems to be a recent shift for him so I wonder what bought it about and how quick he will snap out of it.

Yeah, I remember him remarking that people complemented him on his article titles being so straightforward. Wonder what changed.

now to be fair, verge headlines aren't usually like that.

eg
the verge said:
Microsoft brings video editing to Windows Phone 8.1 with Video Tuner
instead of patrick's
kleptok said:
Sega Pleases, Enrages Alien Fans With Isolation's Pre-Order DLC

one of these is clearly better than the other

Patrick did say in the past that not that many people read his articles in comparison to the views he got on the ms 180 story.

I sure hope he doesn't think his article about what other video game articles you should consider reading or his story about doom mods you might want to check out should be getting anywhere near as many hits as enormous games industry breaking news.

even before the headline changes Patrick's articles have seemed kind of off for at least a few months, imo. experimenting is fine but it seems like too often it's come at the cost of general writing quality. I always feel like I'm reading a first draft.

the Vinny video was perfect. I love that they made him do like 30 minutes of voice training first.

Huh. Reddit's added Giant Bomb membership as a benefit for reddit gold.

I... basically have no clue what reddit gold is. Interesting though, good to see GB making deals, probably getting paid.

Holy fuck is there a lot of quicklooks upcoming. Is this what life's going to be like with GBeast and GBPrime are both up and running? obviously theres still some kinks to work out at East, but they are getting more and more content out.

They had that for a while now actually. At least for the past few months. I did it back in April to get two extra months tacked on to my existing time. It's a freaking awesome deal. Actually you just reminded me that I'll be charged again later this month since my added time is almost up.

That was the pitch they gave us.

I kinda dig Vox's style of journalism, it's really helpful for political and social topics I don't quite understand. I'm less sure how much I like it for a topic like video games, but I'm glad Patrick's experimenting with how Giant Bomb should do news. That's always been kinda a weak area for them.

I hate clickbait article titles though.

The developers claim that the game requires servers in order for the voice/text recognition to work, so that might explain the delay as everything gets relayed back and forth.
I don't mean to badmouth other developers, but this kind of stuff is making voice recognition look bad. It needs to be local or it can't work in a reasonably consistent and snappy manner.

If only Feep would make "put down the pepper grinder" a secret voice command.
I don't understand this reference, but feel free to PM me and I'll include it in the game = D

I picked a helluva day to stop sniffing glue...er, I mean, to stop paying for GB membership.

You know, it is a bit of a bummer such a hilarious video with Vinny is behind the sub wall. If there's one video this year they should remove it from, it's that one.

You might as well say this for every funny subscriber video.

That's how they make their money now. Can't really say that they should stop doing stuff that justifies their subscription model.

I'm sure there'll be a Best of Quick Looks video that'll likely be comprised entirely of footage from that video.

Don't know why you're worrying. The way he made it sound, approaching combat certain ways in order to unlock the perks was something that actually appealed to him.

Going for the perks early on is a good way to mix up the combat a bit. Not just straight up dual shotguns to the face of every enemy. Even though that's fucking great too. A little variety never hurts, keeps the game more interesting.

That Vinny Bot Colony video is probably one of the best pieces of content they've ever produced. It's just amazing. I did skip most of the training though, as I got enough of it to realize how insane the amount of reading off text they wanted you to do is.

At numerous points, I was laughing so often that the constant inhaling and laughs made me get the hiccups at least three times.

I was kind of bummed that Vinny moved back east, as I thought he gelled best with Jeff and Brad, and not really Alex. But it seems he can make a great video all by himself, so it's all good. :)
