What'd you think of Before Midnight?

I thought it was excellent, like the rest of the trilogy. It didn't quite resonate with me on the same level as Sunrise or Sunset but the dialogue and acting remained as fantastic as ever and
goddamn the fight scene was hard to watch and probably one of the best things in the trilogy.
Mostly I was just glad to spend another two hours with Celine and Jesse, rough patches and all. Linklater's one of my favorite filmmakers - Boyhood is an early contender for my favorite film of the year and it's going to take something really special to knock it out.

EDIT: Uh I hate to be at the top of the page without anything GB related so...

IS THE PODCAST CANCELLED IT'S TUESDAY WHERE IS IT

Totally. Tried watching Spirited Away and couldn't get into it at all. Didn't bother with any others. Sometimes I wonder if Japanese media is put on a pedestal just because it's Japanese.

That said, I've always been curios about the moving castle movie, simply because the castle itself looks boss on the poster.

Never mind that so many of Ghibli's fans probably don't give a flying fuck about the rest of the country at all, let alone anime... What a bizarre statement.

Here's the deal: Spirited Away is a weird ass movie that looks amazing, but the plot is a bit bananas and it's generally not considered the GOAT Ghibli film. That'd be Mononoke. Personally though, I'm a big fan of Porco Rosso. Michael Keaton as a WWI fighter pilot cursed into the form of a pig man, who does deals and shit in the waters surrounding Italy. It's really good, and possibly the least "weird" Miyazaki film, besides Castle of Cagliostro.

Howl's Moving Castle is OK.

If you couldn't get into Spirited Away then you certainly won't get Howl's Moving Castle

Spirited Away is certainly my favorite.

I watched Totoro for the first time last month. It was my first Ghibli film. It's a gorgeous film, and the damn song is still stuck in my head... but I was bored. Not much of a plot there.

I still want to watch a bunch of Ghibli films, though.

Ghibli = all Japanese media? A selective process has already taken place. The movies are discussed outside of Japan because they are so good. Not to spite GAF user Zaph who happens to not like them, lol.

You should try watching a few more btw, maybe some of the older ones (Kiki, Totoro, etc.)?

Spirited Away is amazing, y'all be crazy.

Spirited Away is certainly my favorite.

It's really good, to clarify. I just never see anyone (besides you and dude above, I guess) say it's their favourite. The Oscar implies it would been seen that way, but I've always seen Mononoke get that level of praise.

But if you were to pick a favourite, it's basically Spirited/Monoke/Porco/Totoro. They're all incredible films.

Really? I see tons of people naming Spirited as their favourite, though often it's because they haven't seen too many others. Like me! So I just hold off on naming a favourite.

Just my perspective, I guess!

I loved that Channel 4 showed Spirited Away on Christmas Day last year. Makes such a refreshing change from the Pixar films and such. (Wish the dub was better though.)

Spirited Away was (is?) super popular on German kids TV. That's where I first caught wind of it, probably must have aired on TV in '03? '04? I think they still show it from time to time, and not even on a kids channel anymore, pretty sure. For a while they were showing it at least once year (also around Christmas, I think). So yeah, a lot of people know that movie here (either because they saw it as a kid when it came out/now or because they saw it WITH their kids), they all refer to it as 'Chihiro' (the title was localised as 'Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland), and I can say with some certainty that the majority of those people have never seeked out another Ghibli Film. I think years later they might have aired Porco Rosso also, but not on prime time, I don't think.

There's a ton of Ghibli movies I liked more than Spirited Away.

Totoro
The Wind Rises
Arrietty
Castle in the Sky
Kiki
Pom Poko
Grave of the Fireflies
Porco Rosso
The Yamadas
Whisper of the Heart

In this cultural bubble most of us here are part of, you cannot deny there's a lot of hyperbole around Japanese media. Cowboy Bebop isn't just a good series - it's "The best series ever made!!!", Spirated Away isn't just a great film - it's "The best animated film ever made!!". The fetishism of Japan is off the charts in 'geekier' circles, so if you do get around to watching one of these classics, you can't help but be slightly disappointed or worse.

Grave of the Fireflies wasn't even that sad. Why didn't they just eat a hot pocket? Don't they have those in Japan?

Or maybe you've constructed strawmen in your head when the reality is that all sorts of people have varying emotional responses to all sorts of media.

And the best Ghibli film is Nausicaa you heretics.

lol talk about out of touch.

I will say this about Ghibli: their use of color is second to none. Those faded reds and blues are gorgeous and very distinct. I am just really, really not into the subject matter.

I got the impression that most people like Spirited Away the best too. I'm more of a Monoke man myself, tho.

I'm not seeing it, really. I actually see the opposite, people always qualifying that the anime-ass things they like aren't really anime because reasons

I haven't seen any of that trilogy but I need to second the Boyhood recommendation. God damn amazing film

Who is this fool with the oil slick hair

dude looks ridiculous

and look its that other guy who has the personality of a cardboard cutout

I com into the Giant Bomb thread and there's Studio Ghibli talk. What is happening.

Also, Miyazaki movies get all the love. Takahata needs more. Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas. Complete opposite sides of the emotional spectrum.

But, we all know Satoshi Kon was the true king of anime, right? Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress... I wonder what Alex and Rorie would think of Kon's movies...

Couch desperately needs Dan. Brad's fine, but those two are pulling him down. Basically, they need a wildcard.

Edit: Brad's doing a surprisingly good job of explaining and playing Rogue Legacy simultaneously.

Where's Danny wtf

One month long vacation home in Ireland :(

I don't really understand the business sense in trying to have 2 similar sites.

I still believe that Gamespot will remain pretty much the same site as before. But now freelance will do pretty much all news and reviews. They're gonna try to do the same stuff with a smaller staff and less cost because they probably found out that no one comes to Gamespot to read stuff by specific people, so they could just freelance all that shit out.

I kind of see hyperbole everywhere for everything. If you're seeing it more for Japanese stuff, well, so am I, but it's the internet, and more importantly it's the video game corner of the internet: games are inherently Japanese, and anime, manga etc never gets mainstream attention at all so naturally all the talk about it centralises in places like GAF and so on. Naturally, shared interests lead to excitement, lead to hyperbole, etc. Like you say, we're in a geeky circle.

Contextualised like that, I don't really take it that seriously. At the very least, I know it's likely not that representative. What I do know is that, generally speaking, Ghibli gets that level of affection from a lot of different film enthusiasts, those with Asian cinema or anime leanings and those without, so... I dunno, I kind of think it's warranted. And if you don't like it, I don't think that implies anything more about the praise given to it than it simply means you don't care for it.

It's like with The Terminator and Dan: he's happy to not give much of a fuck about it, and it's still one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films ever. And I'd doubt he'd call it fetishised. It all breaks down fairly logically.
