What'd you think of Before Midnight?

I thought it was excellent, like the rest of the trilogy. It didn't quite resonate with me on the same level as Sunrise or Sunset but the dialogue and acting remained as fantastic as ever and

goddamn the fight scene was hard to watch and probably one of the best things in the trilogy.

Mostly I was just glad to spend another two hours with Celine and Jesse, rough patches and all. Linklater's one of my favorite filmmakers - Boyhood is an early contender for my favorite film of the year and it's going to take something really special to knock it out.

Totally. Tried watching Spirited Away and couldn't get into it at all. Didn't bother with any others. Sometimes I wonder if Japanese media is put on a pedestal just because it's Japanese.

That said, I've always been curios about the moving castle movie, simply because the castle itself looks boss on the poster.

Never mind that so many of Ghibli's fans probably don't give a flying fuck about the rest of the country at all, let alone anime... What a bizarre statement.

Here's the deal: Spirited Away is a weird ass movie that looks amazing, but the plot is a bit bananas and it's generally not considered the GOAT Ghibli film. That'd be Mononoke. Personally though, I'm a big fan of Porco Rosso. Michael Keaton as a WWI fighter pilot cursed into the form of a pig man, who does deals and shit in the waters surrounding Italy. It's really good, and possibly the least "weird" Miyazaki film, besides Castle of Cagliostro.

Howl's Moving Castle is OK.

I watched Totoro for the first time last month. It was my first Ghibli film. It's a gorgeous film, and the damn song is still stuck in my head... but I was bored. Not much of a plot there.

I still want to watch a bunch of Ghibli films, though.

You should try watching a few more btw, maybe some of the older ones (Kiki, Totoro, etc.)?

I loved that Channel 4 showed Spirited Away on Christmas Day last year. Makes such a refreshing change from the Pixar films and such. (Wish the dub was better though.)

Spirited Away was (is?) super popular on German kids TV. That's where I first caught wind of it, probably must have aired on TV in '03? '04? I think they still show it from time to time, and not even on a kids channel anymore, pretty sure. For a while they were showing it at least once year (also around Christmas, I think). So yeah, a lot of people know that movie here (either because they saw it as a kid when it came out/now or because they saw it WITH their kids), they all refer to it as 'Chihiro' (the title was localised as 'Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland), and I can say with some certainty that the majority of those people have never seeked out another Ghibli Film. I think years later they might have aired Porco Rosso also, but not on prime time, I don't think.

I still believe that Gamespot will remain pretty much the same site as before. But now freelance will do pretty much all news and reviews. They're gonna try to do the same stuff with a smaller staff and less cost because they probably found out that no one comes to Gamespot to read stuff by specific people, so they could just freelance all that shit out.

I kind of see hyperbole everywhere for everything. If you're seeing it more for Japanese stuff, well, so am I, but it's the internet, and more importantly it's the video game corner of the internet: games are inherently Japanese, and anime, manga etc never gets mainstream attention at all so naturally all the talk about it centralises in places like GAF and so on. Naturally, shared interests lead to excitement, lead to hyperbole, etc. Like you say, we're in a geeky circle.

Contextualised like that, I don't really take it that seriously. At the very least, I know it's likely not that representative. What I do know is that, generally speaking, Ghibli gets that level of affection from a lot of different film enthusiasts, those with Asian cinema or anime leanings and those without, so... I dunno, I kind of think it's warranted. And if you don't like it, I don't think that implies anything more about the praise given to it than it simply means you don't care for it.

It's like with The Terminator and Dan: he's happy to not give much of a fuck about it, and it's still one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films ever. And I'd doubt he'd call it fetishised. It all breaks down fairly logically.
