Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I just started listening to the Bombcast and checking out the site again after hearing about the new hires. I have experienced the amazingness of Dan Ryckert, but are there any QLs or videos with Jason yet?

Jason was hired as a behind the scenes guy. That's why you see more of Drew than before.

Not really. He's in the hire announcement podcast, popped in for one game of Lethal League a couple UPFs ago but outside of occasionally pointing things out in QLs from the video room, he hasn't had any sort of a video presence on the site yet.

Sounds great. Maybe if they finish all the PSX discs they can move on to the PC Gamer ones, I'm sure someone's got a trove of those stashed somewhere. Think some might have even been sent into their offices already in an mailbox video.

Jason "Eagle Eyes" Oestreicher sees all - especially during quick looks. He's a very bold control roomer, always leaping into action when they're lost... or when they miss something.

Case in point: Unfinished: The Forest.

I'd love them to work their way through various system's demos. I hope they can get Jeff on some of them since his deep knowledge would come in handy for obscure games.

Dan just said on Twitter that the first episode of Demo Derby will be up tomorrow at 3AM Pacific.

Awesome! That's sooner that i expected.

Oh fuck yes, and they're doing the Pizza Hut discs too. As a kid I spent more time playing that demo disc than probably half of my real Playstation games. This feature is going to be such a nostalgia trip for me

Thank you!

Thank you!

I now have all of Giant Bomb's Twitch content from 2011 saved locally.

45 videos.
33 GB.

Although...I think something might be up with this method, how does this batch end up being 33 GB exactly AGAIN? I will work to resolve this.

I'm doing 2012 right now.

Well I mean, GB does release and record content on a pretty regularly set schedule.

I doubt it's EXACTLY 33 GB, I'd imagine it's just that both are between 33 and 34GB, and one GB of compressed Twitch video data can hold a pretty big amount of content to make up any discrepancy.

Man good times for first person puzzling. Naissance earlier this year, then Only If a couple days ago, now I'm seeing Mind: Path of Thalamos and it looks great as well. And of course, The Witness is also coming up.

Super interesting projects, all with a personal authorial note, made by very small teams.

I remember I had one Underground disc, in its sleeve, and if you looked closely there were codes hidden in areas on the front and back.

I didn't have many games, so I played that demo disc a lot.

Collusion.

When I re-encoded the 24hr Drew/Dan/Alexis stream, I think I remember the Twitch files being CBR encoded - but that doesn't really explain why the differing amount of videos would equal the same size.

So I guess it's either a) a coincidence or b) Twitch had a disk space limit per channel per year in 2010/11 (which would explain why some old Giant Bomb twitch archives don't work). It would also explain why 33GB sounds low for a year's worth of content (the 24hr archive I downloaded was 50GB+ at Live quality). Are you downloading the 480p's or Live?

Anyone know if Harry's Razors are sponsor of anything on Giant Bomb? I was listening to DLC, I believe, and they had an add for them. I found it ironic since they put up a blog post several months ago where some "hip cool omg chick girl" basically called men dumb and unattractive if they play video games. I felt like my IQ dropped about 50 points after reading it. I just looked and can't the post anymore so I guess the rightfully removed it. Here is the url anyway, http://fiveoclock.harrys.com/post/79/ask-a-lady-he-got-game

Actually, speaking of Only If, I think it'd be a good candidate for a Vinny/Alex QL or a Patrick Worth Playing. I usually don't suggest things as I think GB is pretty good at picking up on the right games, but just in case... it'd be a shame if that one would slip under the radar.

How do I download "Live" versions of videos from Twitch? I'm using JDownloader and I just get one option per video URL, I believe. Some videos download at a small res (could be 480p), whilst others download at what appears to be 720p. Seems like the newer the video, the bigger the res.

http://www.twitchtools.com/video-download.php and enter the stream URL in the box. After it loads all the segments, click the 'Live' button to switch to the higher quality links. Also click 'View as Text' so you can just dump the direct links into Jdownloader.

Not sure if the Live option will be available for all videos, as it might be date dependant.

Dan's eye glass story was something else. Like legit disturbing. If I was really high when I heard that I would probably start freaking out.

Ah, I knew about that tool but didn't know about the text stuff. I will do some mucking around over the weekend. Thanks.

Just using JD lets me dump dozens of video URLs into a single download queue at once. Twitch Tools is rather more manual.

Earlier in the thread there was a kind soul offering to write a Linux script to cycle through stream urls and get all the segment links via the Twitch API. Maybe if you send him all the stream URLs, he can get the Live quality download links?

My cropping is uneven, i disgust myself.

Fixed it.

I hope they also watch all the trailers, including weird stuff like PlayStation Underground or whatever it was called.

I remember almost having nightmares because of that Parasite Eve trailer that came on my PS1 demo disc.

I had (have) a demo disc which featured one track of a snowboarding game. Played that a LOT, wow. Need to look up which game that was, actually.

Edit: I misremembered. It was an early PS2 disc with an SSX demo.

Oh my god the Mario party party is the best and worst. Dan is getting SO FUCKING LUCKY with the warp blocks and happening spots. I just can FEEL the pain Jeff is going through, goddamn.

It's pretty much all luck based, like real board games for kids (Candyland etc) so kids can win too when playing with their parents.

Oh my handpalms and relationship with friends know all too well. I stopped after Mario Party 3, I wonder how good the current games are.

You sir, are a machine. I thank you.

Dans PSX demo video feature sounds amazing.

He's not a personality. Just a tech hand.

Just saw this tweet by Dan:

Dan Ryckert said:
I want to start a 700-part series that consists solely of me explaining Metal Gear Solid lore to @drewscanlon.

and now there is nothing I want more than for this to happen, except perhaps a companion series where Vinny explains DBZ to Alex.

The day Patrick earned my respect is when he stood against Jeff's heretical opinion that 2&4>1&3. Hopefully Ryckert also believes in the correct hierarchy.
