Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

So let me get this straight: Giant Bombcast had a woman guest talking about an LGBT gaming expo and people lost their shit in the comments?

That, and she was transgender, which probably made things worse.

You can tell how many comments were deleted by comparing the number displayed on the main page with the one on the article page. People were assholes and Rorie brought the ban hammer.

Whenever there is a transgendered guest on giant bomb things go to shit. e.x: whenever Carolyn Petit from gamespot makes an appearance. Shameful

Thanks. Now I wish GB would just invite a transgendered guest for every episode until all the ignorant shitlords stop listening. Not sure what that would accomplish on a grand scale. It's just that I feel embarrassed to be a part of that community even if it's just by having a username to view Premium content when horrible people are such a vocal part of it.

I really don't think Patricia Hernandez is that bad, honestly. But expecting anybody to act differently in such a situation is a bit....off.
If I were accused of raping somebody I definitely wouldn't spend my time talking about "consent" or apologize for anything.

I would be totally behind a weekly "Let's Watch Dan Eat New Things" or maybe not even 'new' things, just anything. Maybe have Brad playing Dota 2 or Jeff playing ...something in the background.

Temkin sets an example for the community, but he's not willing really contemplate the possibility he might've messed up, nor does he do much to further a crucial conversation about consent that everyone should think about. And when Temkin is one of the minds behind a hugely popular game, and has gained profile as "one of the good guys" who supports progressive organisations and people, this is a problem.

She's basically saying he did it. Just flat out.

I can't...how was this allowed to go to print?

I have to walk away from this, I'm getting too mad over it. That's something you don't do.

That's weird. I saw that Kotaku article last night and Patricia had responded to some comments. Then Totilo came in and actually posted about how he disagreed with the premise of the article, but now none of Patricia's or Totilo's posts are there?

edit - Scratch that. I guess Kotaku has separate comments between the US and UK versions of the site.

I'm listening to the podcast and don't really get it. It's good stuff. I had never heard of Samantha before this podcast and I'd love it if they had more guests like her on in the future, i.e. games people who aren't necessarily "part of the crew" (like Lang and Drake) but still get along with the crew and want to talk about cool stuff. I fully support a 3+1 or 4+1 format.
I want the bombcast to be purely about the group dynamics. Having a developer pitch their game for over 10 minutes ruins the spirit of the podcast. When Lang, Drake, or Green come they have a level of rapport that fits well with the style.

I have a very specific expectation for what the bombcast is and this podcast did not meet it.

I am very surprised Totilo allowed it. There is a good reason no publications ran the story.

Well to be fair they did ask her to pitch her game :P I thought it was really interesting

Well I hope we keep seeing more varied guests in the future. I couldn't possibly be any more bored of Dave Lang and John Drake.

And she said after a bit that she didn't wanna keep shilling her shit. Don't think it was mentioned after that. She was interesting, enjoy any and all discussion of N64/PS1 games.

are we doing this thing again where we post tweets, blogs, and articles that are kind of tangentially related to giant bomb purely to say "wow look how crazy and dumb this person is"

I still want to know what character Jason plays in Street Fighter 4. Can we put up a chart of foods/games like dislike from the GB crew? I thought Jeff had a narrow palate but Dan is some kind of bubbleboy in terms of culinary experiences.

I just want my fun/silly/GB thread back.

Jellyfish is good god damn it
I got tricked into eating it at a chinese wedding. It tasted like a chewy noodle.

Wasn't there an email on the podcast a few months back where some guy got a burger from every place near him and then had to identify them by taste? I want to see Jeff do that with a food of his choice.

Do you guys think a lady guest was brought on as a reaction to all the hiring hubub? That's how it felt.

Possibly the worst fallout from all this diversity hiring drama is any woman they might hire in the future will be constantly scrutinized by the community for being hired for being a woman.

Nope. They were short a person this week, Samantha was in town for GaymerX and she's a friend of the site. I really don't think there is anything to read into the situation.

Probably not. They just grab whoever is in town. Samantha were in town for GaymerX, and probably were promoting Sentris, since it has just been green lit.

Rorie was probably busy in like 3 meetings at the same time. Jeff was out. And Brad cut ties with John Drake since he's now with Sony.

Instead of the thread devolving into this again, could we go back to the Giant Bomb community thing?

I'm really confused as to how I keep seeing people acting like these issues with the community being shitty are new, from some outside source (Reddit or 4chan), or both. They're not. There's been really terrible parts of the community for a long time. It's just been mostly directed at Patrick, and I feel like it stems from people being completely out of line in their expectations of the staff. For example, I noticed a ton of it back when that Dead Island Riptide scandal happened and people ran to Jeff's Tumblr as if Patrick had betrayed Jeff's views and was taking control of the site away from him or something ridiculous like that. That answer and others by Jeff made me respect him even more, but it also brought a light on how people getting mad about Patrick, social justice stuff, or even just women in general in the Giant Bomb community really do tend to think that the staff agrees with them. And that hasn't changed.

This is what people are talking about when they say that the staff has allowed people to think these things are ok or even encouraged. It may seem clear that the staff doesn't approve of the people rabidly defending them in gross ways, but to some of the people doing that, it's not! They really do think that Giant Bomb (or Jeff, at least) supports their views. Giant Bomb has always had an incredibly welcoming, inclusive, personal atmosphere. It's why when Ryan died, so many people felt like they lost someone they knew. I've also seen a lot of people hurt by other gaming sites in one way or another enjoy Giant Bomb because of that atmosphere. It's a good thing! But it also attracts a lot of really bad people, because they come for the goofy video games playing and don't realize that the staff actually cares about things beyond that. And if you're not clear that those people aren't welcome (and that requires more than just a letter from the editor), you're just hurting the good people that felt safe in the community.

Trying to defend or distance yourself from the community doesn't help anyone. It doesn't matter if most of the community is good, because a large number of people in the community are bad, regardless of whether 4chan or Reddit is adding to it (and that's making the bizarre assumption that those people aren't already Giant Bomb fans as well). That's a fact. There are ways to phrase what you actually mean without being defensive, as ab.aeterno posted. The community won't get better if the bad parts aren't acknowledged, highlighted, and forced out.

I thought brad left.

No. GaymerX happened & a developer talking about her latest game. I thought they would get Jason in to talk about EVO but Samantha lives up north so they probably got a guest that doesn't come that often to join in. She also worked on Unity; an engine a lot of games now use.

Dan is the best

She was already familiar with some of the Giant Bomb crew, and when there's a local event on they always try to bring in a dev if they're available.

So, no.

I don't think people realise that GB frequently tries to bring in guests but it's really hard most of the time (most AAA devs are locked behind layers of PR, and indie's often don't have the money to travel) - I'm sure Brad will attest to the time he's spent doing so. Also, Jeff shopped that Dave Lang TNT around to try and get other devs to do something similar.
