Giant Bomb E3 2012

I finally got to the Jaffe section. My one problem with the guy is that it seems like he's trying to say so much that he jumps from thought to thought before he ever fully conveys an idea.

He looks slimmer in pants.

I think so too.

I've been listening to the day's podcasts at work each night. Last night was the one with Jaffe and I thought he has good insight into how games should be and his view feels realistic. I thought the indie guy (forget his name) that was talking about the game with squares was trying way too hard to project an image and came off as kinda condescending too.

I talked about this in my GB blog... He came off like a total hipster doofus. I mean, I have a lot of respect for guys like that, and the whole Indie scene and I love so many of the games that come out of it, but its guys like that make me think twice about it.

Meanwhile Jaffe, whose populist stance I would normally hate came off super smart and interesting, seemingly no agenda, just wanted to talk games.

I was so happy when Jeff said that bit about making a game where you hide in front of the cover. You could tell from his voice he had just about had his limit of indie hipster nonsense.

I liked "the music is just WIND!" Laughed out loud and coworkers looked at me all weird.

The thing is, he isn't even a game dev. Or is barely one.

He had no business being there, let alone spouting such biased, poorly founded bullshit.

Holy shit at Stephen Totillo. He spent like 15 minutes name-dropping developers and "complained" that no one recognized them while he was unfortunately mobbed with admirers.

That guy was insufferable. I can agree that the industry could use a boost in risky creativity but his, only-indie-devs are-doing-anything-worthwhile attitude was irritating. Games as entertainment is getting in the way of his ideal games as art world.

I think if he's a friend of site or someone they're interested in talking to, that's business enough. Isn't it? I guess he wouldn't be back if he burned a bridge somehow.

Yeah, the Indie/Cards Against Humanity came off kind of badly, his comments at the start seemed a tad insulting about the people who work their asses off for years on these big titles (just like indies work their asses off).

Jaffe was such a contrast to him in praising both, being open and fair to the pros of both.

First thought too.
Ryan's going to be making all the booth babes jealous today, dang, hahahahaha

I forgot he even mentioned that last night. Good on him for going for it!
I only pray we got a shot of him and Johnny V. at some point together all dressed up.

He was making a very good point though - publishers are too eager to hide their talent (just look at how many end game credits don't explicitly state everyone's job title - compare that to films) and developers are often too willing to stay behind the scenes.

Jason Rubin did a great DICE talk on the same problem.

I think he was right. He knew journalists but not the guys who make those games? This seems ridiculous and incredible shortsighted to me.

That's fine but him cutting Jaffe is silly.
If you have some insight or something valid to add, it's fine, but it was redirecting the conversation for no reason/to fit his own agenda.

Just listened to the Day 1 episode today and... did Jaffe come off as a huge misogynist to anyone else?

Okay, hear me out. I like Jaffe. Love him, even. He's known for speaking his mind and not having much of a filter on the shit he says. When he outright called Steven Spielberg a cocksucking motherfucker on Weekend Confirmed a few months back for using video game animation tech in Tin Tin and call it his own? I was in fucking stitches. I like that in an overly "PC" culture, and especially an industry so riddled with bullshit PR and pre-written, rehearsed nonsense, there's a relatively well known dude so willing to speak his mind.

But... between the Tomb Raider comments, the following Hitman anecdote, and his Dr. Who quote that came out of nowhere (I know he wasn't saying anything outrightly negative about women, but he was saying a woman could never fill in the shoes of Dr. Who), compared against, say, God of War, a game for which he's quite well known, and features pretty egregious depictions of women... I was just, like, well yeah. I don't necessarily think he's a misogynist, but I can definitely see why so many people seem to be giving him shit for it, and I hope he's not so ignorant as to why himself.

my only interaction with stephen totilo left me with the impression that he is anything but humble.

It's supposed to have 15 or so stations and a statue based on what he said. What games have statues?

God of War and Metal Gear don't have statues.

I haven't really been keeping up with the thread, has there been any further talk or new information on Star Wars 1313?, didn't brad say he was going to see it in person?

They talked about it last night shortly, after Brad had his appointment with them. The long and short of the conversation was them being wowed by the graphics.

I seriously doubt Jaffe would talk like that about any god of war game, I'd say it has to be aliens.

Also, David Elis and Justin McElroy confirmed for tonight via Ryan's twitter.

ERIC BAUDOUR.

Guy from Mega 64. He was very distracting and by far king of douche. Of course Rocco was great, but he felt very uncomfortable...

He did an interview here:

Sounds like he'd love to have a tech-only discussion about the project at some point. The ILM VFX supe would talk his ear off if PR ever decided to let him loose.

We're right across town Brad! ;P
