Giant Bomb @ E3 2016 | WEED3

Between bouts of sadness I've been rewatching the announcement.

I think he's definitely moving onto another publication ('the enemy boat', as it were), and it sounds like he's ascending the ladder.

"Have I been doing too good a job?"
"That's one way of putting it."
"That *IS* one way of putting it, actually. Fuck."

I imagine it'll help him pay his debt and finish school and whatever it is, more power means he'll be able to help elevate the voices of others and get his own out there.

After listening to friends at the table, part of me had been hoping he got a writing job for a game studio. Something about him moving to another publication bums me out because it's a reminder that my fandom lies with the crew that's struggling, relative to some other places. (ie the 'us against the world' quote, occasional quotes about budget and resources and studio size etc)

Wait, when did Austin annouce his leaving?

Also haven't been able to participate much because i can't watch the streams at work. Listening to the podcasts though and it's been a fantastic shows this year. Super bummed about Austin though. He's been fantastic.

End of the last E3 stream.
Now go watch all the streams with that hanging over you.

What would even count as "ascending the ladder" in these extremely volatile days for games writing and gaming publications?

The vibe I get based on very little is that it's a place that's more stable, with more resources. And with Jeff saying he kind of DID do too good of a job, maybe he's going from an editor position to something with much broader power.

Announced after Lang Zone trainwreck, closing thoughts led into Austin announcing. Killed me.

Did it almost exactly like Patrick's announcement during that GOTY stream. All of these big events are going to be bittersweet for me now.

If it's Glixel, that's Rolling Stone, so would definitely be ascending the ladder for someone who's strength is the written word.

Goddamnit.

Austin was the best thing to happen to this site in ages. The rapport on the Beastcast is second to none. He made me want to try so many games I never would have given a second glance otherwise. No matter who they hire, no one will be able to match the perfect blend of wit, insight, empathy, and infectious enthusiasm he brought to the table.

I'm so upset, but I wish this dude all the luck in the world.

If he's going to another site I just hope it's not Polygon.

It's Polygon, isn't it?

Fuck.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.

And I feel ya. It might be Vox. I love 95% of the people at Polygon, but it would just leave me sad that GB didn't have the resources to give Austin what he needed/wanted from a career and a site I like less DOES have those resources.

But at the end of the day, it's about him, and not us.

I wonder if they ever tried to get Aisha Tyler on one of these shows. I bet she would be cool with doing it but at the same time she probably fucks off back home after each ubisoft press conference.

Man, sucks about Austin leaving. I feel like he did more to raise the standard of discussion on the site than anyone else, Beastcast especially will definitely miss his presence.

Swamped with work, couldn't watch any of it - Austin et al teased a big, surprising guest on the last Beastcast, do we know who they were referring to?

It was a swerve, the big surprise was him leaving GB :(

I kinda doubt it's for another video game site. If he wanted more money, he could probably easily do something other than games writing all together.

Edit: And yeah, it sucks big time. He is a great dude and I wish him the best, but it's hard not to selfish when you know all the great things he brought to the table are going away (and with the way CBS runs things it'll be at least 6 months before they get to hire someone else..).

OK, I haven't watched the E3 day x Videos, mainly because of the wired hours (as someone who lives in UK).

Listening to it now as a podcast form: and Holyshit is Jeff good interviewer. The Ocolus/Civ6/ Kasavin portion of the interview is damn engaging and the questions he asks, while smooth and on-point, proceed to create interesting conversions and things that I haven't thought about before.

Love Kasavin and the Civ6 guy.

The world of games coverage is better with him, wherever he may be.

That's what Danny said re: Austin. I think that's enough to rule out teacher and game studio for now.

At the end of the day, sounds like the guy found a better fit that allows him to do the things he wants to do with his life.
