It's so close to dead. If other publishers start finding out that their fanbases will go anywhere to see their products (including a URL) E3 is close to dead. SONY already toying with their own shows and special theater showings of these conferences is just the state of things to come.

PAX is going to be the next E3, minus the press bullshit. Publishers will just move their actual sales stuff to something smaller and private.
