I haven't played the DLCs but from what I read they are substantial since they flesh out certain details of the plot. The important ones are The Assignment and The Consequence where you play as Kidman.

From a lore/story perspective, the DLC is vital. It literally explains many, if not most of the dangling plot holes left unsatisfactorily unexplained in the vanilla game.

Goes on sale often so you could wait. Also one DLC episode is mostly an arena shooter and not really part of the plot, but the two story episodes are the epilogue.
