Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Even though Dan gave Bayo 5 stars, he said he liked Mordor more.

So it's gonna be Brad+Dan Vs Patrick+Alex

Don't know about the rest.

Ah, forgot about that bit. So, if Brad argues for Destiny, Dan will talk about Mordor and then Brad moves onto Mordor? I wouldn't mind Mordor, actually. As long as it's not Destiny.

And Patrick + Alex won't be able to stop Brad by himself.

I see that a podcast, video and an article are all being posted in 45 minutes time. Which would be the best one to see first? Because I don't want any winners being spoiled.
Podcast before the article or video, usually. Feel the discussion first.

I think it's usually the videos that basically summarize what was decided in the podcast portion of the discussion, so if you don't want to know what won or would rather prefer the discussion, listen to the podcast first and then love on the video production afterwards, then the articles.

Edit: Almost made it there...but the beat(en) goes on.

First listen the podcast, there you can hear the deliberations that lead into selecting the winners. Then you can read the article and watch the recap.

Stupidly excited for this.

Other sites should really look into publishing their own deliberations. Without context for how the discussions went down, I honest don't care what any given site lists as their GOTY. Even providing an explanation (written or audio) does nothing for me without listening to the arguments as it's happening. I know that doesn't make much sense, but it's how I am, I guess.

How does Giant Bombs Game of the Year stuff usually work? Gonna be my first time checking out them doing their big GOTY thing haha.

Every day starting today, they will release a podcast, most of them 2+, if not 3 hours, as well as a recap video.

In the podcasts they debate the categories: best story, best graphics, best music, etc. Be prepared for some pretty wonky categories like Best URL from last year. The podcasts have very little planning and pre-discussion to them other than very rough brain storming, so you'll get to hear pretty much the whole thought process from the crew as they narrow down the winner of each category.

The last few years the recap video has started with a produced clip of some sort, like 2012's TV-show parodies, completely unrelated to Game of the year stuff. Mostly for shits and giggles, they're mostly pretty fun. Intertwined in this clip, they recap the winners of the categories for the podcast that day. The rest of the recap video have been the crew sitting on the couch set and playing some game that won a category, like they play some graphically impressive part of the winner from best graphics.

Furthermore, every day there are top 10 lists from both the crew and guest contributors planned. They are usually listed in the upcoming box on GB's front page.

That's pretty much it. Most people listen to the podcast first to get the discussion, and then watch the videos. Enjoy the ride, it's always a fun one.

They recorded their deliberations which will go up in podcast form. In those, they decide on three games for each category (one winner and two runners-up). The categories aren't platform-specific (anymore) but rather stuff like Most Disappointing, Best New Character, Best Soundtrack, etc. with a whole bunch of crazy and weirdly specific categories, too.

The recap videos serve to show the results (so if you wanna get the most excitement out of it, steer clear of everything until you've listened to the podcast of that day) and basically a QL of a game. In the past, this has usually been a game that placed first in one of their individual top 10s (which are written pieces since last year, no more video) but this year, the community voted on which games deserved a spotlight, whether they already QLed them or not.

Their GOTY format constantly changes - they have different categories each year, the recap videos are done very differently every year (check 2011 and 2012 for FMV and TV parody themes with crazy production behind them respectively) - but the basic format remains the same. You get to listen in on how their GOTY came to be, everything is 100% transparent.

Totally worth it to go back to last year's GOTYcasts btw, the entertainment value has not been diminished in the slightest. And really, you're here for the drama, not the results (which are likely to drive you insane). Enjoy!

Yeah, I can see Mordor win Giantbomb GOTY. I think most of the crew if not all play it and like it. I can't remember other games that they unanimously praise.

Just having Dan in the mix this year is really exciting, as he's really passionate and is good at explaining his reasoning (weird as it may be), two thing very useful during these things.

To be honest I'm way more interested in the most dissapointing award (aka Destiny or did Brad win?) than GOTY (most probably Mordor).

I have never really heard Dan dig deeper into a game, but they usually do that during these. I hope he can hold his own against someone like Brad.

Will the podcast be available for download immediately or do they use some web player? Last vacation day and this would be perfect for the drive back home.

Sub'd! Easily my favourite run of podcasting material all year. Brad better do a good filibuster. I don't think he's really done a solid one in the last few years (or maybe I'm remembering wrong).

Always tempted to just dive into the video stuff, but I love listening to the podcast too... Decisions, decisions.

Aww yeahh. Been looking forward to this all month... Gotta finish off FarCry4 today because I imagine it will get discussed a fair amount.

I'm looking forward to this a lot more than I was last year. I'm curious what they will do for the recap videos with more staff this year.
