Giant Bomb |OT31| I Think it Might Be for Show

Wait, does Abby really think the One S and One X is the same because of 4K output? I need to listen again, but also why did no one told her how it is? They just don't care.

They probably don't know the difference either, but yeah she doesn't understand the difference between upscaled 4K and native 4K I guess.

Was that on the Beastcast? The podcast with tech journalist® Bakalar?

If so, damn.

Blue Bombin' yesterday was a fucking A+ stream. Alex slowly breaking as the conversation devolves around Dan's nonsense is wonderful.

Breath of the Wild is a pretty alright game that just hides the standard open world emptiness and monotony better than most.

So is Backalar actually in Blue Bombin'? I might have to watch it if that's true.

no
actual answer: yes

Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece.

You had me for a second

As is MGS2.
But then you lost me

Speaking of games that aren't Masterpieces, I finished Hellblade. Despite some pretty big flaws, I really like the game and respect what it's trying to do. I do hope it's a success for NT, the gaming landscape could use some more games like this (by which I mean shorter and more focused)

(Safari suddenly ate my post halfway through, ugh)

I've just been listening to the Twin Peaks Rewatch podcast episodes for The Return while I got other stuff done between watching episodes, since that show was recommended to me by a couple people in the past few days. It's already helped me catch a few little things I've missed.

It's a bit unfortunate that the other things I want to get done this weekend involve a lot of watching other TV as well, so not much podcast time. At least for tonight it's given me an excuse to finally play more ARMs (I got it right before Splatoon 2 came out and didn't ever really give it much time) as a podcast game.

Need to check it out when I don't have anything to listen to. (S3 spoilers first 4 episodes)
So far what do you think about the different COOPs? Any favorites or do you dislike the entire thing?
Arms is ok but yeah, it's the perfect podcast game unless you're playing online? Haha.

Yeah, I wrote about it. Definitely a game worth playing despite the flaws.

Spelunky is a certified masterpiece.

Spelunky is the closest thing I'd call to a masterpiece.

But I don't like the idea of calling anything a masterpiece without a large view of its position in the medium it is created in and its lasting impact or contribution.

Yup. Bakalar even confused her more with "There is no power differency" - but was probably speaking of the One S compared to the One (which is also not quite true).
He talked nonsense of the Pro before, and the Switch... not really sure how he got that job, lol.

Masterpieces, every single one

I never got into Transformers so everytime anything Transformers comes up I just kinda shrug my shoulders.
The only Transformers thing I ever saw was one of the Bay movies.

Alex mentioned that his GOTY is still Nier: Automata(latest Blue Bombin'). Which is a good thing because I would take anything at this point over PUBG. I also say this as a guy who enjoys playing and watching PUBG but somehow the idea of it winning GOTY seems like the most ridiculous thing ever.

It's totally going to win GOTY

Not only is MGS2 the greatest MGS game in the series but it's also the the game I feel Kojima actually gave a fuck about, it's the most sequel-ish of all the games and also the last game to have the Soliton Radar which is something that's iconic to the series, really wish they used it more, well not in MGS3 obviously but in MGS4 I expected it.

They should at least have made it available during the return to Shadow Moses, have the Solid Eye malfunction on the way there and then you have to use the good ol Soliton Radar.

Metal Gear needed somebody who challenges Kojima. Not in a "No, this is not what the Market wants, the chart clearly says that..." but in a "Do you really think a Vagina bomb is a good idea? You want Quiet to do what?" kinda way.

Yeah, I wrote about it. Definitely a game worth playing despite the flaws.

That's a good write up. I don't necessarily agree that it should have been an action game but the "puzzles" do weigh it down a lot. I wish they would have come up with something more interesting instead. I actually really liked the ending
for arguably not being just a huge bummer. I thought I knew how the game was going to end before I even started it

If Konami didn't fuck around, I believe we would have gotten an even greater game than what we got with MGS5.

I like all the ideas and themes present in MGS2 but the dialogue and plotting is so ham-fisted and mostly people talking at you rather than, y'know showing you things or having you do them, that I can't in any good conscience call it anything other than an ambitious game whose reach exceeded its grasp by a lot. Great ideas, poor execution.

I'd sooner call MGSV a masterpiece despite its ludicrously bad story because in terms of game design I think it's damn near perfect. I wouldn't actually. But I could make a decent argument, were I so inclined.

You reminded me of George Lucas

I mean I would like another perspective on this but that's the only way I feel it would've made it a more tighter and focused experience? Either that or make it a full blown "walking simulator". I liked how it wrapped up as well, the final few minutes are exhilarating and exhausting at the same time.

I'm a bit sad how the Quiet thing ended up because I really liked her as a character, she was cool, having her hymn while out in the wild and cover my ass when I needed it.

Her exit mission is really sad.

Also, wish they had her speak more though, Joosten have such a beautiful voice.

Oh well, what is done is done.

It's funny because I was 100% thinking about Lucas while writing this

I feel like if the game had too much combat it would kinda detract from the experience but I also have no idea what I would do instead. Maybe more varied puzzles and a faster running speed, no idea. Searching for those runes did get tedious fast for me.

yeah i like quiet as a... i don't know, a character? like, the way she's acted/animated, and her presence and the humming, and to some extent her design (not the being totally naked bit).

it's just like everything in the story that deals with her is kinda nothing and also her origin is shit and dumb and the 'reveal' that she's
the commando who attacks you at the beginning of the game (which i guessed, like, immediately)
doesn't really actually do anything for her at all really

also helicoptor ass wiggling and dancing in the rain

I have her wear the XOF suit so the chopper stuff isn't too creepy. :p

Yeah, I've always really liked the idea of Metal Gear, but I can barely handle Nolan expository dumps let alone what ever the fuck you can call Kojima's scripts. To take the Lucas comparison further, he's a great broad strokes ideas guy, but he shouldn't be writing dialogue. As such, unlike seemingly everyone else, I liked V's story better than anything else I've seen in the series, precisely because there's so little of it. (I still don't think it's good though).

In general good prose >>> plot anyway (Catch 22 and Lolita are pretty close to my favourite books ever) - not that they are mutually exclusive.
