Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Anyone think Giantbomb (as it is) will still be around in a year? I'm not so sure.

A year, yes, in some form. I think it'll be fully integrated with Gamespot within 2, though.

Yeah, but it's not like they run ads, what else would they make money from? It still doesn't mean they're hurting. This seems like a dramatically different situation than, say, when UGO bought 1up, which indeed was because they were about to go bankrupt.

Did you pay attention to the World Tour stuff? It was sad to see how far short they fell from their goal on that. You could also see how many members they had during the BLLSL. It was barely more than 20,000, wasn't it?

Regardless of what this means for the end user (I'm personally optimistic that the GB I love will remain relatively intact), this is some ultimate revenge scenario for Jeff, depending on how candid the discussion about 2007 is in a couple hours and what is all revealed. If he did in fact get shitcanned with a settlement in 2007 only to start his own company and half a decade later get a big payout to sell it back to the same company that did him wrong initially? You couldn't write a better script.

It's like the Michael Scott Paper company getting bought back by Dunder Mifflin.

What a weird day.

My position too.

There is no way a business company will keep two "similar interests" under the same umbrella.

Why split the pageviews when they can be on the same page?

These acquisitions always work out.

I mean look what happened to Bioware, Pandemic, Origin, Bullfrog on the gaming side and 1UP on the reporting side. No problemo.

They wouldn't exist at all by then if they didn't do this, I'm sure.

If the crew did a kickstarter they'd get a zillion bucks in funding.

On the bright side, I fully expect Jeff to be EIC of Gamespot after the sites do merge.

i like john he was one of my favorites on 1up yours but john is a fixer. he comes into a dying company and turns it around then moves on. stuff goes to shit again after new management comes in. example gamepro.

so you mean discovery? if discovery gets their hands on the site it will run into the ground in a year.

It was bought by Braunbraun or something like that, so not exactly discovery. I don't think thats a discovery parent company, but I don't know for sure.

It's funny how a lot of us are already talking about the site's demise in a few months/a year while, based off of what Jeff said (i.e. the subscriptions were the only things that kept the site going), it seemed like Giant Bomb might've died sooner had they not found a new home.

Also, the rebroadcast of GB's announcement here:

And stop clicking that outdated GameSpot link I posted!

this makes me sad

I put the o/u at a 16 months. A quarter of honeymoon phase, a smooth quarter, bumps over 6 months as more gamespot guys make appearances, and the inevitable slow enveloping over the fifth quarter.

Giant Bomb circa 2008:

"Fuck you guys, we don't need you anymore. We won't be held down by the shackles of corporations."

Giant Bomb circa 2012:

"Please take US BACK! We're sorry!"

I'm aware of all these things, but you're saying GB would have died within a year. I'm saying I see no evidence of this. There were no Whiskey layoffs, either now or before. If GB were losing money, I'd imagine CBSi would demand a change in management, as they're not in the business of losing money, and we haven't seen that, and in fact at GB is claiming that initially at least they'll be able to run the site the way they're used to.

Yeah I suppose, perhaps their death is just inevitable at this point and they chose to prolong it, and maybe get jobs at GS out of it.

Maybe if it does end up imploding again, they'll take John Davison with them this time, guy does have some more business sense and has great contacts.

Tested was not bought by Discovery. They are now owned by a media company that sometimes works with media companies, some of which are NBC, syfy, and Discovery.

I bet the sites will merge in about 18 months. I don't know who'll come up on top (gamespot will absorb giantbomb or giantbomb will get bigger and replace gamespot?), but no way in hell a company will have two websites covering the same thing.

Edit: don't get me wrong, I believe the name of the final site will be "Gamespot". I'm talking about feel and content here.

Ironically, 1UP had a big layoff today.

Sound familiar? Big site (IGN) takes in smaller site (1UP).

Proceeds with layoffs.

Nothing at all good will come out of this.

Bank it.

I think they probably won't change things at first, in order to capture as much of the audience as possible.

Besides which, this move is getting rid of the two biggest current anchors on GB: Screened and, unfortunately, Tested, both of which had to be absolutely BLEEDING money.

This is telling, and can be seen to back up my suppositions. From Patrick's Formspring:

Patrick Klepek said:
I can tell you this: we've been talking about our future for a while, and we made this decision on our own.

Gamespot is a giant when compared to GB. There is no chance in hell that it would be called GiantBomb.

Anyway, 1 year from now, GB is fully absorbed into Gamespot. I'm ready to put money on that.

We have come full circle.

How does it feel to be the Summer Glau of gaming journalism?
She's pretty hot, so I'm okay with that.

From a branding standpoint, 1 is usually better than 2. Is the long-term plan to keep Gamespot and Giant Bomb separate, or will there eventually be just one video game journalism site in the CBS Interactive family?
We would not have gotten ourselves into this situation if we thought we would be losing the brand. Giant Bomb means everything to us.

Giant Bomb doesn't have that many people working for it. I doubt there will be any lay offs.

From the talks of it, we have 12 people on this thing.

Jeff, Ryan, Vinny, Brad, Patrick, Drew, Dave, Alexis (website creator), Jeff (another engineer), Sarah and Tony (Comic Vine, another website).

There isn't much fat to cut. You wondered why Coonce was not with them? That's the cut. And the other Romanian people that worked for Whiskey media.

That is pretty damn boss.

I think today's overall news with all the Whiskey sites is pretty exciting, the one bummer out of all this is the end of the GiantBomb/Tested/Rorie crossover. Really going to miss their appearances on each other's sites.

I thought brad Left? And you forgot Alex Navarro.

This is a different situation though, Gamespot is the site in the shitter here, GiantBomb are smaller but produce better content. This is more like Pixar getting bought by Disney (going to keep saying this until I've convinced myself its true), Davison was brought in to revive Gamespot and make it relevant again. So him being behind this move is definitely a good sign for GBs future, even if that future does seem like it will one day mean Giant Bomb itself ceases to exist.

I've heard several times now about how things aren't going to change, they are only going to get BIGGER - and that now they've been freed up to do other things because they have a budget.

That is my concern though - someone handing you a budget usually expects a return on that, and if GB had to be bought out to be sustainable it doesn't seem to make sense that things wouldn't change.

Honestly, Comic Vine seems to be the weird thing in all of this. I'm not sure how they fit into CBS at all, but with Comicon being a "thing" now, having people cover it on some basis is probably a good idea.

One thing's for sure, just like as the result of the Acti/Blizz situation, whenever something goes poorly, it's going to be directly blamed on this merger.

Yeah, I saw that on GiantBomb's live stream and chuckled.

It's funny how Jeff is going back to Gamespot (in a fashion) after the hoopla with Kane and Lynch. I don't think I'll be following GiantBomb (and I really didn't other than the "WOW! NEW SITE!" launch) if they turn into Gamespot-lite.
