Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

I just saw the thread on GB about it. WHAT THE FUCK? 30 pages over the word "faggot"? Which he apologized for instantly, and on twitter, and on the forums? Grow the hell up. Even saying people aren't allowed to say it in the thread when discussing it. So self-righteous

blame media, they've essentially brainwashed society into thinking that this word is the worst thing imaginable.

Brad being a man baby and rage quitting seemed much more shocking than Ryan saying the f-word. Weird to see Shoemaker act like that.

I actually think it's more people love the drama. Happens all the time in the Starcraft scene, kids use it as a replacement for soap operas.

I just got home and can't believe there's controversy over a dude saying "faggot"...the internet never ceases to amaze me. How do people make it out in the world when they're so easily offended? I just can't deal with the way the internet blows everything out of proportion.

Terrible way to think. Just because people say it does not automatically make it okay. Some people might be offended, some might not. Adjust accordingly. Also people seem to miss that Ryan himself was not okay with what he said out loud, he felt terrible and apologized (very often).

Wow, I'd never see this blow so out of proportion. It was a slip of the tongue and not aimed at anyone, so why are so many taking offense? Are people even taking offense or just talking about it for the sake of it?

May or may not be relevant, but this was aired on a public broadcasting channel in Sweden, I wonder what the backlash in the US would be like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx7p21hrZ6s

It's blown way out of proportion though just because Ryan is a public personality. I mean that word has become such a generic term these days, most people aren't trying to be offensive, it's just turned into a substitute for other words.

I just feel bad for Ryan. You wouldn't even bat an eye walking down the street hearing it come out of peoples mouths but he lets it slip once in a moment of rage and people are ready to crucify him.

If you read closely you'll notice the ratio of "people not offended complaining about people being offended" to "people legitimately offended" to is about 50:1.

Hehe, I'm kind of happy I missed it. Sounds like it got awkward.

If you guys ever get that frustrated again, just go dark and put on your break music from E3 for us. Some of us like the tunes. Oh and the dancing gifs of course :)

Man, people complaining about brad rage quitting.

I actually think he had to do it so that there were no lives lost that day.

I don't know Ryan Davis, I-I never met Ryan Davis or had any contact with him, but -- [cries uncontrollably] -- I'm sorry, I can't go on!

I looked at Ryan's apology and wondered what the hell could he possibly have said. How was Ryan assholish enough to make him apologize like that? Holy shit, I think if I learn what he said I may have to look up the word because I might not even be aware that words so disgusting even exist.

And now I'm wondering, was it SERIOUSLY just him saying faggot, or are you covering this up.

Because honestly, what the fuck.

Yeah it was faggot. I don't get it either.

You know how when you stub your toe really hard, or slam your finger in a door, or bang your shin or something like that? Hop around in pain, cursing? Ryan was doing that, and faggot slipped out there along with a string of "dammits" and "fuckers." It's around 1:22:40 of the video they posted; you can tell when it happened even though it's bleeped out now.

What? Brad's rage quit was fucking brilliant. Ryan saying something he clearly should say at work let alone during a live broadcast was obviously a more shocking thing. Ryan doesn't deserve to be lynched for it as it clearly was something he said out of anger, but at the same time it's behaviour that shouldn't be tolerated in any workplace and he was clearly aware of that given his instant apology.

Patrick's "Worth Reading" is complete garbage. It is not worth reading (or watching or playing), unless you are into indie pretensions.
How dare people learn about some articles and projects that might normally fly under their radar by clicking an entirely optional link on the front page?

I stayed away from this thread and GB for the last 12 hours, as I wanted to watch the Lantern Run archive unspoiled, and I come back to madness on both sites.

I will never understand the vitriol people get for uttering a word without any derogatorily meaning behind it. Sure it is not a nice word to hear, and it would be better if it was not said, but for it to cause such a crazy debate simply becuase the word has a history is madness.

The same site used retarded and spastic (or "spazed out") in the past. Retard is offence in it own right (but is regularly used to describe things as "bad"), and if spastic is heard on UK or Irish TV it pretty much causes a media meltdown in both countries. Weirdly, Faggot can beard on British TV during the daytime, as it is a food item

Anyway, I am rambling. I will just say that I obviously do not agree with anyone who uses the words in a inflammatory way, but when someone uses them basically to say "I am mad" it is not really the end of the world.

I haven't seen where anyone in this thread has been that offended or want to see Ryan punished. Seems pretty sane to me.

As for the GB thread... consider the source.

PS - FANNY. Oh yeah, I said that shit.

Are you trying to make it sound like I'm outraged? I'm just saying it sucks, a lot. Pointing out stuff that only circulates in certain scenes doesn't make a difference.

Continuing on that thought, I wonder why they don't just quick-look the games he brings up.

I'm not "trying" to do anything, I just don't get where you're coming from.

There's a segment of their community that is definitely wanting that kind of content either generated or brought to their attention, and that's who those are aimed at. I've personally enjoyed learning about some of the things he has posted, but I guess I should just spend my own personal time browsing other sites if I want that. No reason to have things sifted out for me from an area of gaming I don't follow regularly.

Three things:

1.) We're fine because we're discussing it in an academic sense, but people do realize that saying faggot as a pejorative the way Ryan said it is a bannable offense on GAF, right? This isn't just GB reacting to the word.

2.) Anachronox would not make a great Random PC Game I don't think. That's just my opinion. I have a feeling it'd be like Baldur's Gate 2, a great game, bad to watch a chunk.

3.) Freespace 2 would need to be Flight Club material, not Random PC Game.

Did Ryan even use 'faggot' in any context, or did he just blurt it out in frustration? Also, people being upset by words and not intent are silly.

I am slightly confused by the minimization here. If it had been nigger that Ryan said, would everybody here also think that that was no big deal?

Nigger only really has one real meaning, even in modern society, whereas faggot is a much more general insult these days. It can have the homophobic connotation, but lots of people who use it can just mean it as a general swear word, like Ryan did.

Wasn't he just using it as an exclamation? I don't recall there ever being a pejorative context associated with the word. Unless he was literally calling the game "a faggot", which... I somehow doubt was the case.

He just blurted it out, but the point is that it's not a word Ryan thinks he should be using*. And he probably shouldn't. Which is good, because really, he doesn't.

* The way people parrot stuff the guys say, it could become a meme, and that wouldn't be good for anyone.

My memory of it is fuzzy because I played it when it launched in 2001 and haven't since, but wouldn't Anachronox be pretty good endurance run material?

He was referring to the Cthulu monster, I believe.

Both "nigger" and even "jew" can be used as non-targetted swear words among the absolute worst kinds of people.
