Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

I'm actually surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner. With all of the livestreaming that GB does, often featuring guests and alcohol, it was pretty much inevitable that someone would say something off color in the heat of the moment. Especially when playing a game like ITSP co-op, where it is a nonstop, super intense scramble. I just hope that it's handled rationally and that no corporate crusaders get involved.

Nigger only really has one real meaning, even in modern society, whereas faggot is a much more general insult these days. It can have the homophobic connotation, but lots of people who use it can just mean it as a general swear word, like Ryan did.

You've obviously never played a Call of Duty game on Xbox Live before, have you?

Deep in his underground lair, Aris Bakhtanians sits at his monitor, becoming further and further enraged as he peruses the messages of forgiveness for Ryan Davis. Aris scornfully shakes his clawed fist. "I'll get you next time, Mr. Davissss," pausing mid-hiss to pet his Kayopolice pillow. "Next time!"

"Patience, Aris," a sinister voice from across the room instructs. "This is only a minor setback. Mr. Klepek's protectors will fall, one by one. Our revengeance cannot be stopped. Until then, we wait."

Aris and funkystudent erupt in maniacal laughter.

How will they try to take Brad out?

The way he went about handling it after he said it was very professional. All the guys at GB realize when they've done something stupid and are definitely up front about the shit they do.

It's the internet, not TV. It's already been handled by a twitter apology and an apology on the GB forums and the offending word was edited out of the archive video. That's more than what was needed to handle this relative non-issue. It's over, and I honestly can't tell whether or not you chuckleheads keep pushing this issue for lulz.

Can you guys shut the fuck up about it already?

If Tera was all Poporis or however you spell them, I'd be a lot more interested in the game. Unfortunately it also has pedobait (but it might bring out some of the pedophiles on gaf, so hey!)

I didn't really like what I saw of Tera. :/ But I'm not the best judge of MMOs in the first place.

I can't see too many people jumping into that kind of experience with the competition available.

Patrick's "Worth Reading" is complete garbage. It is not worth reading (or watching or playing), unless you are into indie pretensions.

yes, rockpapershotgun does this type of weekly article very well and giantbomb's versions usually look very pale in comparison.

I thought the most shocking(and hilarious) part of the lantern run was Brad genuinely screaming at them after he started playing Trials.

Yeah. They were all seriously pissed off, not just a bit annoyed. Especially when Brad went "It wasn't my fucking fault, dicks!". And then Drew comes in sort of quiet and cautious to tell him the stream is shutting down. They even added that extra bit at the end probably to not make it such a downer lol.

Speaking as someone who's never actually played this game, I'm pretty sure that they could clear it if they didn't even bother picking up two of the lanterns at the start and just had two dedicated people to clear the obstacles. Pretty much every wipe comes from getting all their lanterns tripped up on eachother or just being helpless in the hallways. Will and Tricky are good with the lanterns, which would leave Brad and Ryan to be the vanguard.

I beat it last week and you're more or less right. The less lanterns you're carrying the more shooters you have, and the less you get in each others way. The shooters have to clear the way / protect whoever is carrying the lanterns more.

Speaking as someone that has also never actually played the game, I wonder if it would even be possible to get a score of 1,000,000, which is one of the two achievements that spawned the Lantern Run, if you leave two lanterns to die right off the bat. Half of the scoring system seems like it's the sum of the distance traveled by each lantern, so you'd essentially be leaving money on the table immediately if you left two.

I believe they said that there is a finite number of rooms in that game mode, so there would be a maximum number of points you could score with only two lanterns, I guess the question is just whether that number is under or over one million.

The real problem is probably that they try these so far apart that they really aren't getting any better at the game. Again, I haven't played it, but a lot of their deaths seem like they are caused by them not being comfortable enough with the controls, or dealing with certain enemies.

Yeah this is what I thought. Two dedicated shooters and obstacle clearers out front and it's basically a cake walk for the two brhind with the lanterns.

I want to watch Giant Bomb break up over a heated homophobic argument on a Lantern Run. Maybe have Will powerbomb Brad in the process before storming off to Tested and then Ryan hits the on-looking Jeff with a folded chair from behind and takes off his shirt to reveal a Gamespot shirt underneath. Vinny left to wonder where did it all go wrong amongst the carnage.

I stayed away from this thread and GB for the last 12 hours, as I wanted to watch the Lantern Run archive unspoiled, and I come back to madness on both sites.

I will never understand the vitriol people get for uttering a word without any derogatorily meaning behind it. Sure it is not a nice word to hear, and it would be better if it was not said, but for it to cause such a crazy debate simply becuase the word has a history is madness.

Thank you so much for making this post. I was in the same position as you in that I have been avoiding the threads so I could view the Lantern Run unspoiled. Then I saw the comments on the video itself while I was watching it.

I seriously cannot believe the way people are behaving about this. I have homosexual friends (male and female) and have two gay men in my immediate family, and not a single one of them said they would have taken personal offence to this off-hand comment, or even considered the person making the comment as someone who hated gay people.

Unfortunately this sort of thing is an issue I have come across both on the internet and in real-life frequently. It is my personal opinion that if you do not fall within the group that this word is supposed to be hurtful to (homosexual people in this case, although the same would apply for nigger to black people), that you shouldn't be offended by this.

Homosexuals do not need us/you to be offended for them. They don't need us to stick up for them. They can fight their own battles. I would be willing to guess that the vast majority of people who are upset over this are not even gay. More likely than not, the vast majority of GB users are straight white men. I (like most people) am of the opinion that hating someone because of their sexual orientation, race or religious beliefs is something that this world would be better off without. However, I also think it is important for those people who are affected by this hatred to speak their own minds about it and not have their arguments clouded by people like me who have no "horse in the race", so to speak.

Saw it on the Giant thread on GB:

I've never understood the Ryan hate I've seen on GAF.

I've got a lot of respect for the guy. When he drops the "faggot", he apologizes and Brad tries to give him an out by saying something to the effect of how they curse all the time anyway. Ryan mans right up and says nope, what I said was beyond that and completely unacceptable and I was wrong. Far too many people, especially in the media, just "lawyer up" and try to hide their mistakes.

Much respect for Mr. Davis.

And the delicious, delicious rage in that video is why I finally became a subscriber this past month :).

So what are some of the must-see TNTs? I just became a subscriber and watched the two Cards Against Humanity Ones which were great – where do I go from here?

Battlefield 3, Dead Island, Fortune City (Fortune Street? Whatever it's called!), Tony Hawks 3, WWE All-Stars, Trackmania 2.

There's a lot of great ones on their JustinTV site which aren't archived too, like Bad Company 2, Quake, etc etc.
