I don't mind pre release QL-EX's.

I like them more then interviews.

Once a QLEX doesn't replace a regular QL I'm ok with it.

But they almost always do, their (valid) reasoning being that there's no point in doing another 20min+ video if the QLEX already showcases what the game is about.

The good QL-EX's are always ones with friends of the site. Double Fine, Harmonix with Drake and Pope, Johnny V, Dave Lang, Seth Killian. Can't really think of a good one that didn't involve one of those guys.

The worst ones I remember in recent memory were the NASCAR one and the one Ryan did a week or 2 ago of some action game that I already forget the name of.

Dave?

I'd kill for a GB x The Hundreds shirt. They seem to be into that kind of thing. I've seen Jeff wearing stuff from 10 Deep, Mishka, etc.

I don't think shidoshi has ever posted in a GB thread, but I'm sure if she saw this discussion she could explain this whole thing. ;P

I will!

Okay, seriously—let me clear up a few things. I don't hate Giant Bomb—I love them. I don't hate Giant Bomb's Endurance Run of P4—I love it, and I love the extra exposure it gave to a game I adore. I also don't hate anybody who names their P4 main character Charlie in reference to the ER or Giant Bomb or whatnot. And really, in the grand scheme of life, my dislike for "Charlie Tunoku" ranks really, really low on the things I care about on a day to day basis.

The explanation is just that sometimes over-used memes rub me the wrong way, and this is one of those times. I guess maybe part of it is some silly "OMG Persona 4 existed way before Giant Bomb did an ER" kind of thing, part of it is just me thinking it's a stupid name, and part of it is that I've always been very picky about not attaching fan-created names to characters. It pains me emotionally when people rename their characters in RPGs, and while I know at the time Yu didn't have an official canonical name, I still didn't/don't like so many people attaching a community-created name to him and wanting companies like Atlus to actually recognize that name. (And really, that second part—the Charlie name being recognized—is where I get bugged.)

But, honestly—I'm not a psycho! I have issues with the name and people in the community wanting it to be attached to the character beyond Giant Bomb's ER, but I don't lie awake at night stewing over my hatred for those who dare speak that name. If the name is brought up then I can't stop myself from making some comment against it, but really, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that the name came from something that helped more people discover an under-appreciated series, and that's something I'm happy about.

All of that makes perfect sense, but you shouldn't worry about anyone who seriously wants Atlus to recognize Charlie as being the Protagonist's name. They're crazy.

I personally hope they give the P5 Protagnoist a name, even if he remains silent, so the other characters can speak it in the game instead of being stuck using pronouns the entire time.

I just like Charlie as the guy's name because it sounds cool... and I've watched over 100 hours of him being referred to as Charlie, so it kinda rubs on the brain.

All I know is, I'm gonna call him Charlie. Everyone else can do whatever.

Charlie is cool. Tunoku is so dumb, though; even worse than Tuna would have been. Shame Brad wasn't there instead of Ryan when they named him.

No. That was just his manga name.

But didn't the manga come before the anime? I assume the manga character called Souji Seta is the same anime character Yu Narukami?

I ask because I find it weird that people dislike others calling him Charlie, yet refer to him as Yu when Souji Seta was his first official name.

Worst QL EX hands down was Dyad.

It's not exactly official: whilst the manga is officially licensed, it has no input from the P4 team, IIRC. So when the time came for those guys to give Charlie a real name, they made one up from scratch.

Yu is a good name for a formerly nameless, silent protagonist anyway. It's punny!

Okay, that makes sense now since I didn't follow the manga at all or knew of its production history.

There are a couple good ones, like the Double Fine stuff, but otherwise they're pretty much useless and I don't watch them either.
I am glad that they at least label them what they are, because they are almost kind of sponsored endorsements, but like said, there are a few good ones.

Anyway, I am still not sure if I am going to re-subscribe. I mean when they used to have screened and tested all under on roof, and they were actually good. Screened is now terrible without Rorie and Alex. And tested, eh, I am not fond of the road they have taken. I still like the guys, but their site is now trash with that meebo bar and new layout. Plus I don't really like the whole mythbusters influence (I see that they saw this as their best chance to stay alive and relevant), but I feel like its just too out there with the Adam Savage podcast.

And like others have said, I feel terrible talking about the guys in any kind of negative light, but they have not been doing anything to make me excited. Sure, they have given me tons of hours of entertainment, but I feel like they have hit a wall. I was really excited about Jeff's Hall of Fame or whatever that was, if there was more random PC things and flight club crap with the D.V.D team, or load our last save. It seems like the random PC game and whatever they have done in the past week or two have been kind of scraping to try and get subs.

All I ask is that they keep trying and just trying new things, don't get comfortable or stale. Don't mix Gamespot in. And keep Giantbomb its own thing. I know that my favorite Giantbomb days were the ones in Sunny Sausalito when they were a two-bit operation and basically just showing everything and all the behind the scenes too.

There wasn't any random PC game in the pass week or two...?

The only really major subscriber content recently was the olympiad, which is enjoyable.

Oh, yeah, sorry, I didn't clarify. I meant they they have a random PC game listed on their schedule on the home page for next week on September 11.

As I've stated before, seeing that they're ready to demo the new site now probably means that dave's time is freed to do some premium content.

But Dave isn't the guy holding the keys to the premium content bus. there are five full time staffers that ought to feel responsible for putting out stuff every week, rain or shine.

Ah, I wasn't really talking about the rest of the staff, just the RPG stuff which seems to be his thing.

Jeff is apparently locked up in meetings with CBSi a lot of the time. Ryan might be too some of the time. Not sure what they do the rest of the time. Let me check my creepy stalker folder with the spy camera photos first.

Man, Giant Bomb is a site that shouldn't need any meetings. "Yo, we'll play games, record most of it, put the videos up... Ryan promises not to call anyone a faggot again..."

Sorted. Put me in charge of CBSi.

As I've said before, I just wish they'd be more transparent in what they're up to. What's more frustrating than the lack of content is the disconnect and lack of acknowledgment to the community in their recent shortcomings. I know everyone is probably occupied with Big Live Live prep, but still.

It'd be cool to have more 'building the bomb'-style features like they briefly had when they first moved back in March, if only to fill in the gaps between TNTs.

Just hoping in general that there isn't some kind of bait and switch, with an increase in premium content around Big Live Live to rope in new subscribers, and then another drought. Can't help but feel that may be the case.

You both hug and stab your Jeff Gerstmann body pillow from time to time!

"How many Facebook likes does this SNES get us? How about expanding your mobile coverage, our data shows it's the future of interactive media."

"Have you considered free-to-use options for the subscriber model? How about a variant where half a day of premium membership is given to those who get a unique friend on Facebook to like a link to a trailer on the site?"

what?! when did they say that? surely cbsi isnt that dumb

at least Jeffrey did the retro thing at home on monday, otherwise i would be seriously disgruntled.

I don't know about "a lot of the time", that was more of an attempt at an explanation, but he's said that he's in meetings pretty recently in I Love Mondays.

oh ok. maybe its just this week. the idea that Jeff has to spent most of his time at GB in meetings with CBSi is terrifying.

and as much as i love complaining about lack of content on giantbomb.com, recently there have been some epic weeks for subscriber and regular content. there have been a few droughts too but i think the times they have spoiled us make up for it. and Jeff did an awesome 4 hour livestream on his day off this week. i'm resubbing for sure.
