Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

oh ok. maybe its just this week. the idea that Jeff has to spent most of his time at GB in meetings with CBSi is terrifying.

and as much as i love complaining about lack of content on giantbomb.com, recently there have been some epic weeks for subscriber and regular content. there have been a few droughts too but i think the times they have spoiled us make up for it. and Jeff did an awesome 4 hour livestream on his day off this week. i'm resubbing for sure.

It's easy to forget the occasional 4 hour marathons, though. I'll consume the whole thing in one sitting, and then the next few days I'll come home and there's nothing to watch.

As I've said before, I just wish they'd be more transparent in what they're up to. What's more frustrating than the lack of content is the disconnect and lack of acknowledgment to the community in their recent shortcomings. I know everyone is probably occupied with Big Live Live prep, but still.

They are still more transparent than other sites when it comes to behind the scenes shuffling. You never hear anything like this from gamespot or ign. Giant Bomb has been an internet start up for 4 years, they seriously need to settle in for good.

We're verging on the terrible/creepy GB forum fanfic here.

Oh I can accommodate if you'd like

"We find having your video man, Mr. Caravella, appear as on camera talent as a redundancy. We've hired some You-Tube personalities to replace him."

Cant wait for GB to hire some young sexy youtube personality and we can get daily "GIANT BOMB NEWS DROP - BOUGHT TO YOU BY INTERNET EXPLORER" videos.

At least it will be daily content.

So how has comic vine been the last few months? I never visited there site so I dont know what kind of output they had. Where they messed up as well?

I fear there may be repercussions if the BLLSL doesn't meet targets.

every segment is going to end with Ryan asking the guests for their twitter handles and Brad is going to be at the boards doing an AMA on reddit. Drew is going to be extremely busy, working behind the scenes and pulling questions from a g+ hangout.

"We're leveraging social media to shift the paradigm of what people expect from GB."

You know what would be a neat premium members feature? A video of the behind the scenes meetings between the bombsquad and the CBSi marketing/business people.
Get some cinéma vérité all up in this bitch.

I get what you're trying to imply, but those guys seem to be doing quite well for themselves after the sale.

Yeah I know lol, it was just an easy poke. Like FV said, the youtube website is better designed than the actual website at the moment but Will has been very open about that and they fact they are working on a redesign. Anyway, this is O/T in here.

The site was thrown up at short notice due to the sale, pretty sure they aren't happy about it & are going to have a redesign at some point.

That's the point. Even Will Smith in the Tested thread asked what they can do to get people to go to the site again and not straight to YouTube.

I have a hard time considering reupping my GB subscription that expires today. Not only is it twice as expensive (last year it was $25 for GB and $25 for Tested), but the future is very hazy. GB will say all the right things, but if I was at CBSi I'd be thinking they should be merged with Gamespot.

Charlie is cool. Tunoku is so dumb, though; even worse than Tuna would have been. Shame Brad wasn't there instead of Ryan when they named him.

Maye that's where my peculiar rage over the name stems from: The combination of Western first name + obnoxiously fake Japanese last name.

... okay, so maybe I am a little psycho.

So... why are the TNT videos premium on the site when you can just watch them for free on Twitch?

Btw, I died laughing at the Triple H hair article. I hope they talk about it on the Bombcast this week.

Edit: By the way, from watching the Fortune Street TNT, it's a crime that they've never done a TNT or a quick look for Dokapon Kingdom. That would be all of the funnies.

The idea was if you gotta pay to have the "high res" archive (and use their bandwith) or you can go for the free low res version on twitch.

Maybe I'm the only one in here, but I feel like I've easily got $50 worth of entertainment in the past year and am going to resub.

Even with the lull I still find it hard sometimes to make time to watch all the stuff they put out.

I'll be resubbing, but mine isn't up for a while since I buy the shirtless holiday ones.

So, I subscribed on day 1, and I remember them adding a few days from the Amazon outage. However, I felt like the 2nd BLLSL happened BEFORE my subscription would have expired. Now, they are doing the BLLSL after everyone who signed up on day 1 would have their subscriptions expire. Seems odd, or are my days off?

Higher quality and I guess they turn a blind eye to allow

to enjoy their content.

Here's what I got the meetings thing from, by the way:

It's been great working with John, but honestly, it doesn't really change much at all. I'm still having regular (CONSTANT) meetings with the management team about where we're at, where we're going, and what we need to get Giant Bomb to where we want to be next year. I sat down with Ben (who's coming in from our UK office to replace John) last week and he's a sharp guy who understands how dramatically the Putting Content on the Internet game has changed over the last five years. He's the guy who brought in Danny O'Dwyer over there, so I'm pretty convinced that he understands what's important.

When, due to them not hitting targets, they had to sell off the company to CBS or close. This is a business, not a couple of guys in their basement anymore.

I didn't follow the buy out very closely, were those really the two options? I was under the impression Giant Bomb did quite well for itself and wasn't in danger of going under? I thought they just sold it off because the offer was good?

No, they were slightly vague about it but in a Quicklook soon after the acquisition Vinny admitted that they failed.

Fair point, and you're right about their transparency vs. other sites but even by GB standards I was hoping for a bit more of an inside look, even if it was in the form of those dumb 'around the new office' videos they stopped putting up.

I hope someone on the live radio show this week gets some new info about where things are going (I'd call in myself but I'll be at work).

This is something you'd expect to read a week after they got bought, not six months after.

"... and what we need to get Giant Bomb to where we want to be next year" is a really depressing line.

Also, I'm just watching DJ Hero TNT and my girlfriend pointed out Ryan's knee. Any idea the story behind it?

Pretty sure they get to it and tell the story.

It almost certainly is. Remember Vinny joking about with their accountant about getting the funds and there actually being an issue with it? Great story, pretty shitty for them. Think it was on a Bombcast.

And you're probably right, but it feels like GB has had no direction for months and months now. These constant meetings have had no clear impact for the end user.

Edit: Ah, just got to the knee bit in TNT!

You don't happen to remember what quicklook that was do you? I'd be interested in hearing that... Oh god! that's a little stalker-ish isn't it? I'm becoming one of 'them'.

I was kind of curious, too. I don't remember hearing anything quite like that, and I'm wondering if perhaps he's reading too much into it.
