it's so stupid. i react to that by only buying e-shop games if they're exclusively downloadable on the wii u and am going to bake the lack of flexibility into what price i'll pay for them. basically never buying a full retail game on the e-shop - though i might break this on 3ds for animal crossing solely for the convenience

Since Brad could play all of Patrick's games on his account, maybe that's why. If you can't register your account on another console, they don't have to worry about who bought that content.
