As lukewarm as I was on Diablo 3, the graphics, multiplayer implementation, sound, music...pretty much everything aside from price and the ability to kite was better than Torchlight 2.

5/5 games on GB this year.

Mark of the Ninja
Dust
Sound Shapes
Diablo 3
Trials Evo
Journey
Rhythm Heaven Fever
Syndicate

Could be a downloadable game this year...

Brad has single-handedly trivialized the 5/5 rating at Giant Bomb. It means nothing.

If X-Com is really good, I'm thinking thats their GOTY. Mass Effect 3 or Diablo 3 or Max Payne 3or Borderlands 2 doesnt feel right

edit: oh forgot about AC3, thats a good choice too

As of today my GOTY is Sleeping Dogs so I hope its in the discussion by the end of the year. Everyone on the podcast seemed to like it.

Looking back on the year, here's the big games I've played (so far):
- Mass Effect 3
- Sleeping Dogs
- Borderlands 2
- Diablo III

But my favourite games are all much smaller games, unlike previous years:
- Journey
- The Walking Dead
- DayZ
- Dear Esther
- Fez
- Trials Evolution

The next couple of months are likely o have some really good big games.

Overall this year has been really too quiet. Even the beginning of next year seems more interesting than the whole of this year to be honest.

I definitely don't think Syndicate deserved the 5/5 but neither did Sound Shapes or Diablo 3.

EDIT: I did enjoy Syndicate for what it was. It actually was decent at telling a story. I don't think a lot of people played it (less than something like Binary Domain-which is also criminally underplayed). I liked it as much or more than Resistance 2, and that game had incredible reviews across the board.

Syndicate, Diablo 3, and Sound Shapes are the only ones I disagree with.

The rest are fine.

But that's okay, not going to agree with everything.

coming these next few months:

X-Com
Dishonored
Halo 4
Assassins Creed 3
Black Ops 2
Hitman

Those are all pretty huge games

For me, the GOTY so far was probably Max Payne 3

Indeed, hopefully there's at least a few winners among those since this year really needs it.

Forza Horizon could also be interesting. Still not sold on it though, the 30 FPS is kind of a downer.

Diablo 3 certainly deserved it - it's a fantastic game. People were upset the game didn't provide enough content after playing close to 100 hours (they added new ranks a few weeks ago, so the situation is likely different now)! If that doesn't speak to its quality, I don't know what does.

I don't personally agree with the score, but I can see how one could justify it. It doesn't bug me to the point that I would say "Brad Shoemaker has made the 5/5 review worthless." I do wonder how many of the people here with opinions have played the games though.

The one that had me scratching my head last year was Renegade Ops.

Seems like a totally competent top down vehicle shooter, but 5 stars? Wat.

I was upset that the game had a disappointing second half and became a mindless and badly balanced slog on higher difficulties where most of the content was.

GOTY seems more valid to me when the whole crew played all of the games that needs to be played. Uncharted 2 and MGS4's win seems more valid to me than the more recent GOTY winners just for that reason alone.

Huh?...

Nearly everyone played Skyrim and ME2.

Regarding quick look vs quick look EXes, it seems like the higher profile EXes seems to do really well for them. The views on youtube for the Borderlands 2 EX is much higher than their regular one. Though that might be due to it being preview footage that fans really want to see.

I'm glad it hasn't just been me. I've had trouble falling asleep the last three nights now because of the heat of my room at night.

Same, though I live in Southern California (about a mile from the beach) and it rarely gets above 70F here because its constantly cloudy, and the sea breeze. Past few days it's been getting up to 80-ish and I've been dying, lol. I'm just used to the mild-ass tempatures we normally have here.

This, this is the post that convinced me people will complain about ANYTHING where reviews are concerned.

I'm sure you won't respond to this since you seem to ONLY post in this thread when someone says something negative (lol), so open question to the thread: For GOTY (or any other award) debates should post release patches, content, etc factor in, or should they be considering the game as it was at launch? Diablo 3 has me thinking about this as say what you will about that game at launch, it's come a looooooong way. It's probably still short of what it should have been, but it's a considerably better game now then it was at launch. I'm curious if that should be taken into consideration or not.
