Not sure where you're getting that, but myself, Patrick, and Ryan carry our 3DSs with us everywhere, and I play mine on the bus every time I get a seat. If there's ever an iOS game better than Mario 3D Land, I'll eat my damn phone.

By the way I just "finished" that game yesterday and holy shit is that "last" level incredible. I almost jumped out of my seat on the bus as I was frantically dodging Bowser's super fireballs as little Mario and just barely made it to the end. Playing 3DS on a bumpy bus ride is a whole extra level of challenge!

I remember when I took Yoshi Touch & Go on to a plane and the humming sound the plane made constantly erased by lines after a second because it used the mic "blow" sound to clear the screen. Rather than put the game away, I took this as a challenge and somehow got some of my best scores in the game while doing that.

I disagreed with Ryan on the Steam Box issue, but after thinking about it, I think he actually had a really insightful stance.

It makes sense to just make a prebuilt Steam-branded PC for people that want a box in the living room separate from their work/browsing computer, who can't be bothered to build a PC, or who just have been console gamers until now and want the easiest possible way to get in on all the advantages of Steam. Basically, it can bring Steam to the audience that won't buy a PC because Xbox is just easier.

But then I think about the pricing, and it falls apart. It can't be way more expensive than an Xbox or someone would buy an Xbox instead, but if it's near the price of an Xbox it's not going to have comparable specs, and the solution to that is to allow upgrading, but that would eliminate the purpose of the Steam Box in the first place.

So yeah I think the idea of a wireless bridge + dedicated controller is totally genius, and is just the sort of innovation Valve would shoot for.

I didn't watch that video, but my position on the Steam box is the biggest mistake they could make is creating a linux based dedicated gaming box. Getting into the viciously competitive hardware market is the kind of thing that could destroy Valve. Sticking with interfaces and possibly accessories that makes playing PC games on your television easier seems like the better approach and what I think Valve will do. Also, possibly establishing certifications that vendors can slap on their boxes to create a baseline for gaming PCs. However, something like that would have to be very carefully considered because any standard Valve establishes has the potential to be the target PC developers aim for some time.

Valve would be stupid to get into the hardware business when Sony is going to come out with a $500 tablet that plays full console games that you can plug into a TV.

That was about where I had to turn off the video. Just... what? And the guy then went on to say "ok whatever my idea is stupid BUT SO IS YOURS"

Yeah, I would love the Steambox to be a wireless dongle that'll harness the power of my computer to become a sweet ass game console.

Dunno if this was posted, but Ryan was on Gamespot's Quoted For Truth, and he kinda schools the two guys on, well, everything.
The Steam box part was really weird. It can be architected like a PC, but still not be really a PC simply due to custom software loaded onto it. What if it runs a custom Linux where all you really can do is access Steam and play games? Is it still a PC then? Building on a PC architecture would simply make it easier to "port" games. Any Steam game with a native Linux version, even those out right now, would run as is. No porting, no recompiling at all. That's something you'd lose with, say, a PPC processor and a full-custom graphics chip/full-custom APIs.

Brad please talk about SM3DL on the podcast, I need to hear some positive Mario discussion after the bad taste NSMB2 left in everyone's mouth. Also, NSMBU actually looks pretty good.

Valve is not a huge company. They don't have the money for a full console launch. I predict that in a year we'll have a Steambox beta (sorta like the chromebook beta) for a Wireless connection between the PC and TV, and the thing will be released for $150 or something. They'll also release a Valve controller.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are amazing games in their own right, but I really bums me out that they don't become challenging until the late/post-game. An entire Mario game at that difficulty level would be godlike, but Nintendo will never do it.

gad doom is so good

why cant any corridor shooter match the double barrel shotgun? I would love to run 90mph through corridor after corridor gunnin pinkies with that baby.

Forget the indie 2D platformer revival. When are we moving on to early 90s PC FPSes.

People always said that Serious Sam and Painkiller were that revival, but don't think either feels like Doom. Mechanically they might be close but the level design is just not the same.

For sure, not to mention Serious Sam is much more of wink and nod throwback then any sort of reinvention or refinement like so many great indie 2D platformers are for that genre.

yeah, colored key cards are always great. just a shame you don't have to equip them like MGS1.

It was in answer to the video, and I do think the snark is a little necessary to balance out the anger. His stipulations were very clear: no ports of existing games and no upcoming games. The Vita had to be judged by what has been released so far alone. Under that lithmus test within the first 6 months of a console's release, I would say the vast majority of systems would also fail.

It needed the heavy hitters now because there is no precedent that it will be any more than the successor of the PSP. People should absolutely expect more out of Sony and quit coddling the Vita as if it needs defending.

Anyway, the maze like level design in Doom is great for a very specific type of game. I wouldn't find it acceptable in a modern TPS/FPS and I think it's silly that some consider it well above most shooters today. "Find the way out!" is not a standard for shooters and shouldn't be.

I completely agree, but reviewers were already complaining that Galaxy 2 was too hard.

Nintendo will never do it, you're right.

I prefer the Crysis, Farcry, Halo, etc style shooters with vehicles and openness to approach combat in a variety of ways. I'm not interested in linear corridor shooters like COD and the maze like Doom levels aren't what I'm looking for either.

Mario Galaxy will fucking blow Brad's mind once he finally plays it.
Whoa, I didn't know he didn't play it in full. Next Breaking Brad should be SMG1 or SMG2 then (lol, probably not). He'll probably like them quite a bit if he's getting a lot of 3D Land.

Playing any handheld on the bus or train can be challenging, imo. :P

I remember trying to play EBA on the bus/train on Hard Rock a few years ago and it was pretty tough when the ride got pretty bumpy. Playing Super Princess Peach on a commute wasn't too bad by comparison. The World Ends With You might have been difficult now that I'm remembering it.

It still made 1.5-2 hour commutes pass by more quickly, though!

My ideal Breaking Brad at this point would be him getting the 'C to Shining C' achievement/trophy in SF4:AE. (For that matter, it wouldn't need to be Brad; it's the kind of long-play video content I'd like to see in general -- I'd be just as interested in a similar 'Situation Normal: All Jeffed Up' documenting-the-challenge-type series as I would another BB.)

Definite 'long haul' content though, which it's sad to see doesn't seem to pan out all that successfully. I was a little dismayed when they called time on Dave Fortress after the first loss (I totally get that Dave was a busy bugger at that time, and continues to be).

Related aside: The very-much-missed Street Fighter Is Hard series.

What if Valve produced a Steam branded controller (with Steam overlay button) that came with an installation of Steam inside the controller? You walk into a supermarket or game store and pick up a controller, take it home, plug it in to pair it with your PC and it says "hey, want to install Steam?". Couple that with maybe some kind of box that when connected to your TV wirelessly screen-shares (à la airplay) your PC. They could sell the controller+box for sub $100 to bring PC gaming into the living room (to complement big picture mode) without needing a lengthy HDMI cable or the PC being nearby.

This isn't much interest to anyone, but after spending a day fiddling with Giant Bomb's API, I have come to a few conclusions.

1. The API is pretty good
2. Except when it isn't

But good on them for including one all the same.

Now, if only it was a bit more flexible for what you can search it for.

EDIT:

Specifically, when using the /search/ function to find a game, which seems to be the only way to find a game via the API's filtering, it has a bizarre way of sorting some games. For example, when searching for 2012's "Warp", the API instead returns Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped as its first result. I'd rather not crawl through a bunch of results to see if any of them (out of the 10 at a time I can grab) are the one I actually want. It'd be nice if I could sort by release dates. Because I'm specifically targeting 2012 games and rereleases. Also, it doesn't support aliases very well. "Sonic the hedgehog CD" fails because it is an alias to "Sonic CD".

(I am, of course, using this API for small scale, non-commercial, vaguely educational usage.)

I'm watching this QFT thing and the Gamespot guys are making me want to go to sleep. Giant Bomb has spoiled me.

edit: Ryan bringing the heat now, lol. This other guy looks like he might start crying any second now.

For pure old-school style there's already a few in development, I can't remember the names of them though. Also don't forget about the Rise of the Triad remake.

Though the truth is they never died, the Doom modding community is just as strong today as it was 10 years ago. Google 'Action Doom 2' for a good example.

They exist. Recently they even backwards engineered the Doom engine so that Doom total conversions can legally be stand alone games. Go checkout "Nazis!", or "Urbain Brawl", or "Harmony" for some recent goodness.

edit: Here's a good Something Awful thread about oldschool styled shooters: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3420790&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1
