They did it: Halo 1 really was great. And they played it in style, on the Xbox 1, like Halo should be played. None of that Anniversary nonsense (but I loved Anniversary).

Everybody's answer on that is going to differ - for me, Halo: ODST stands out the most.
Yeah, I dunno why, Halo:CE has to be played on the original xbox on the Dukes. Halo 2, doesn't really matter.

Is there a generally agreed upon "best" Halo, like does one noticeably stand above the others

Halo CE and Reach are my two favorite campaigns.

Halo 2 has the best story (Arbiter) :), but so so campaign. Best Multiplayer.

Halo 3 is solid, not my favorite, not the worst. There are a few really spectacular levels (The Covenant and The Ark)

ODST is my least favorite, I still like it but there isn't as many note worthy moments. The soundtrack is incredible though.

I personally think Halo 3 was the high point. Halo 2 was great and it added a lot of the franchises signature features but it also took a few steps back in a few areas. I liked ODSTs campaign but it didn't have it's own multiplayer. Reach also had a good campaign. I didn't play much Reach multiplayer so I don't really know how it stands up to Halo 3.

ODST has the best soundtrack hands down. Then Halo and Halo 2.

You gotta love that smokey sax.

I still think Halo 2 is the worst campaign out to the bunch. Halo, Halo 3, Reach are probably the best campaign wise.

Flood does suck, but Patrick is giving 343 unwarranted credit, Bungie already ditched them with Reach. I know there were story reasons, but still.

I loved the hub world in ODST. Sexy music, great atmosphere, and the little AI guy changing the digital signs to point you to places was a nice touch once I noticed.

Yeah I loved the hub world, but the actual missions were lacking.

Still, I'm glad it exists.

I like what they tried to do with the campaign, but the engine was dated and busted as shit for cutscenes with human faces talking for too long. Being weaker than Chief was an interesting gameplay change as well. Hunters were terrifying when you first run into them.

I loved Halo 1 so much, but was incredibly disappointed with 2. Then I bought 3 and haven't touched one since. Shooters unfortunately haven't catered to what I like in more than a decade.

Hell no.

Reach > CE > 3 > 2 > ODST

And that's factual, I've ran the numbers.
Oh shit my apologies, you might be right, let me go over my fact sheet one more time.

...

Nope, sorry, you're still wrong. Just checked. Original Halo has the best campaign, ODST's open world and backwards narrative structure makes it stand out (even if it's technically/graphically one of the weakest entries), 2 and 3 were trainwrecks.

Halo 2's maps are the best collection of maps in FPS history.

Not a hint of sarcasm.
I agree. I WISH Halo 4 was going to have a set of 4 vs 4 maps as awesome as Halo 2's: Midship, Ivory Tower, Lockout, Beaver Creek (eventually Warlock and Sanctuary through DLC)

Halo 2 texture pop-ins were the worst. I remember being really annoyed with it in SP.

It was shitty, but a side effect of an innovative intentional design choice. There's only one loading screen in the entire campaign when you load it up, and I remember reading how they wanted it to be a seamless experience from beginning to end.

Games now are still broken up by loading screens, sometimes even in levels.

The only ones I ever cared enough to actually play were Halo 1 and Reach. I assume I made a good decision.

Yep. Good choices. :)

Halo 4 Looks like one to remember in terms of campaign.

I saw the the second level "Requiem" on YouTube, and let me just say... wow. Evokes Halo 1 feelings of first crash landing on Halo.

I still remember seeing Halo 2 in that massive EGM issue and being astounded by the stencil shadows and dynamic lighting and self-shadowing. Then Bungie went "lol jk"

You played the best one, so sure.

I really wish the Giantbomb twitch account would allow user-made highlights, there are bound to be some in this stream but who's going to watch for 24 hours, really.
