I think 3 beats out ce for me. Reach and odst come in next with 2 at dead last.

The word 'epic' is an overused term in games but that word always describes my halo 3 experience.

Reach had the worst mp maps though. Half of them were just forge maps (never played the dl maps, just original set and anniversary add on).

The only ones I ever cared enough to actually play were Halo 1 and Reach. I assume I made a good decision.
Nah dawg. 3 has the best sp.

I think 2 gets a bad wrap for campaign. It has BY FAR the most ambitious storytelling.

Switching perspectives to Arbiter humanized the Covenant and gave insight to the internal struggle that was going on. The Brute/Elite civil war was really interesting and seeing three way battles happen aboard High Charity was amazing. The Prophet of Truth also became a great antagonist who had ulterior motives, blinding the rest of the Covenant with false lies of religious zealotry.

All of these ideas were new and introduced in Halo 2. As a whole, they made the Covenant, a much much more interesting enemy.

I don't think people deny it was the most ambitious of the series.

it was ambitious all around. The execution and the hardware is what let it down.

Switching characters was neat, but the story and storytelling took a bizarre turn from Aliens to a silly pseudo-philosophical half-assed commentary on religion with a big plant that spoke in iambic pentameter, and Incubus and Breaking Benjamin songs.

Ambitious, sure. Good? I had plenty of fun with the game, but those cutscenes man. Eurgh.

Yeah, but can't excuse them for Gravemind.

Going to agree to disagree, the cutscenes are the best part of Halo 2. I think the execution of the story is well done. The actual campaign itself is debatable.

Delta Halo is a phenomenal level though. One of the best in the series.

Shame that the Flood was still such a big part of the game though.

There's something about Halo 2's enemy hit reactions or graphics that made killing enemies not very satisfying when compared to killing enemies in 1,3 and Reach. Which is weird because I find killing opponents in MP very satisfying, moreso than 3 and Reach.

I didn't know Drew knew as much about LOST as he did.
Good on Patrick for talking about LOST when I get back from eating dinner, haha.

And now X-Files! YES!

edit:
How does Lost always manage to come up when Patrick comes around...
The man knows good conversation. Now, we only need some Jurassic Park and we'll be set for the remaining hours.

The central mythology of The X-Files is not Samantha, she was only ever a motivation for Mulder's hunt for 'the truth'. The Syndicate is the central mythology in the show. Which is actually completely addressed before Samantha was.

I agree with anyone who thinks Halo 2 is underrated. Best story by far. It starts to fall apart a bit towards the end, but it's still an amazing game.

This is just single player though, if we're talking multiplayer as well then Halo 2 is the best Halo.

You played one of the best (CE) and the worst (Reach).

Interesting to see such a wide array of opinions in regards to the Halo games.

Seems every game has a contingent of people who claim it's the best of the bunch.

Guess people enjoy the franchise for different reasons.

I can understand people saying CE, 2, 3, or even ODST is the best, but I will never understand people who think Reach is the best, let alone a good game.

Such a boring, stale, soulless waste of a game.

While I think 3 is the best overall Halo game, the ending of Reach is the best of the series IMO.

Bungie are working on a Marathon game, that does make me wonder what it'll be actually.

They were great games, better than Doom and Duke anyway.

And yes, there is one on XBLA, the second I believe.

They lost me storywise in Halo 2 with the overmind. The reason I say Halo 3 is the best game is due to all the features they added on top of the multiplayer. Halo CE holds a special place in my heart just because I played a ton of split screen multiplayer with friends but I think in the end Halo 3 just put together a crazy package.

Graphically, the original Halo was a standout graphical masterpiece for its time on consoles but every Halo game since has had far too many graphical trade offs.

The ending to Reach is brilliant. The music, the Pillar of Autumn flying into the distance in the credits.

The shot of Noble's helmet in the dirt across the beautiful landscape of Reach years after...

I'm surprised anyone got invested in Halo story-wise. I thought the narrative in CE was interesting since it just threw you into the middle of a war and didn't treat your character like a player surrogate. The second they started trying to flesh that stuff out beyond humans vs aliens vs aliens, it got really cheesy. I also liked ODST because of this.

Funny you say that because ODST had arguably the cheesiest story out any of them. The forced relationship between Buck and Dare was downright embarrassing. The characters in general felt like cardboard cutout stereotypes. The ODST's just weren't very interesting... The game also had very little, if any effect on the universe as a whole.

The atmosphere of walking around New Mombasa is great though.

My ranking:

3>CE>Reach>2

2 wasn't a bad game, but a lot of the ways it tried to evolve from CE weren't fully realized until 3 which is why that one is the ultimate realization of Halo IMO.

Reach was an overall good game too, I actually loved the grittier art style. Long Night of Solace is one of my favorite levels in the series, as well. But aside from that level and the solid early levels, nothing was good enough to put it above anything else in the series save for 2. Also, lots of focus was put on the characters and story, but everyone except Jorge had no personality whatsoever, and most of the time I had no clue why I was even in a level.

The reason I left ODST out is because, as a spinoff, it wasn't bound by the Halo name. They would never have done the level hub, the highlighting HUD, the silenced weapons, the increased danger, etc. in a numbered sequel. It's probably my favorite, and a must-play, but if you can only play one Halo game it's not indicative of the series. It's best played alongside Halo 3, actually, which is basically how it was intended.

Also, Wars is actually a really great game too, but obviously it's even more far removed from the series than ODST. Unless you are a big Halo fan already or are just itching for a good strategy game on Xbox, there's not much reason to play it.

I'm a big Halo fan and I actually want to discuss how the Flood work from a gameplay perspective and why lots of people have come to dislike them (in my opinion unfairly), but I'll save it for when Alexis and Drew start encountering Flood again.

It's my understanding that the project at Bungie was never officially stated to be Marathon related (though very strongly hinted to be), but was ultimately cancelled?

For anyone that still wants to play the games, the entire trilogy is now available for free much like the first two Elder Scrolls.

That's part of the reason I liked it. Give me cliched characters over bad science fiction nonsense.

You know what? They should totally have people like this who barely know anything about games sit in on Quick Looks, because they can actually ask some great questions.

Maybe people would get really mad, but I think it would make them more useful as "reviews"
