Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

I think their GotY process might be the most ridiculous bit of videogame criticism I've ever witness. I can only imagine every other publication is just as bad. It is illuminating.

Yeah it's kind of terrible if you start to think about what they're doing: Hey let's compare all games of 2012 against each other, even if they are nothing alike, and let's just agree that one of them is "the best".

It's still fun to listen to for the discussion and i like all their stupid categories. But the core concept of it can be rather nonsensical.

MOTN maybe, Fez? No.

FEZ is on mine, but I think more because of how it made me feel while playing it. it's smart, and it makes you feel smart for figuring it out. Games don't do that anymore.

But while they all played it, I doubt it stuck out in their minds enough for it to be memorable.

Well that's why it's meaningless, but fun. We all do it to, in our heads. And we guffah at other people's opinions because they're not ours, "amirite?"

But that's also why it's fascinating.

During the VGA's last week, a friend of mine was up in arms by the fact that the walking dead won game of the year because it's more of a visual novel than a game. We had a short argument which ended with, "well it's fine, it's the VGA's. It's a big flashy event with no context. The real GOTY discussion starts next week when people actually start explaining why they chose these games." She could accept that a lot easier.

But she's gonna be upset when the Walking Dead is at the top of everyone's lists anyway.

Best Dumps.

What? Jeff says "dumps" a lot.

Number 1 position: "Like a truck"

Most Ostensive Game
Most Emblemic Game
Best systems

Non-word of the Year will be a real slugfest.

It all makes sense in our head, it's just the part where you try to convince a room full of people that this massively multiplayer first person shooter is better than this 3 hour art game is the part where it becomes silly.

But then the final option will be:

Shepard is now ... A) The hero of the galaxy and the whole universe. B) A Hobo.

Perfect bittersweet ending. In his mind and to us he is a hero, but he is also an emotional wreck as he finds out none of it actually happens.

It also lets them have ME4 take place after ME3 with a new story that is not constrained by the events for 1-3.

GOTY is going to come down to XCOM vs The Walking Dead with the former likely taking it because it's the one game all 5 of them sincerely enjoyed.

Wow, not too shabby but I would be very surprised if ME 3 wasn't in Vinny's list. Every time it's brought up he speaks positively about it and the Leviathan DLC seems to have really rekindled his interest in the series.

Why would ME3 spoilers be in a game of the year podcast? The only logical reason would be ME3 being considered a candidate for GOTY, which is absolute madness.
You forget Giantbomb's zany award categories.

Last years:

  • 2011's 2010 Game of the Year
  • Best Mission/Level
  • Best New Character
  • Dave's Eastern Bloc Game of the Year
  • Best Music
  • Skylander of the Year
  • Best Debut
  • Best Surprise
  • Best Sky Game
  • Best Use of a Licensed Song
  • Best Competitive Multiplayer
  • Best Use of Nolan North
  • Best-Looking Game
  • The “Check Yourself Before You Wriggety-Wreck Yourself” Award for Things That Need to "Take a Break" Before They Become the “Worst Trend”
  • Best Use of 3

Even using that list (I'm sure there will be new ones for 2012), I could see ME3 come up for best new character with Javik.

Whoops.

Yeah, Mass Effect 3 is totally going to be on Vinny's list. Quite high up there too, I suspect. Gonna edit my post and either remove Transformers or Mark of the Ninja (he played it and liked it, but he wasn't singing the praises of it like Brad or Patrick).

Edit: Added my prediction for the site Top 10, as well.

Edit 2: I forgot how much Vinny was really into Fez, as well. Didn't he claim to have half a notebook filled with notes and stuff? That's definitely making his Top 10.

I had 1 bug the entire time I played Xcom yet dozens and dozens while playing Sleeping Dogs. Neither of them hindered the gameplay that much and didn't take away from them being my favourite games this year.

I hope they ressurect the Soulja Boy award for games to play when you drink and get drunk or smoke and get high*.

*Giant Bomb does not directly approve of smoking and getting high.

When do the northies become the bakies(for Troy baker)
Looking at imdb, North had 17 appearances this year, while Baker had 24. But Baker has more "additional voices" while North has more protagonists (most notably AC and Spec Ops).

But yeah, that joke's been played out.
