Brad's review, our perspective on the game, is very much from this very specific viewpoint of; maybe at one point finding the series interesting, losing the thread, not necessarily playing a whole lot of this kind of videogame. And if you're in that camp with us, we're basically saying this looks pretty interesting. If you're looking for this hardcore Devil May Cry player perspective, we're not really out there to provide that... We're not running reviews for DMCfans.com.

That quote is great to understand why there might be a disconnect between hardcore fans of a franchise and reviews for any niche franchise's sequels. And honestly, there are fan sites that do specific reviews for that kind of player, like for the Hitman or Splinter Cell games.

If you're that hardcore DMC fan, maybe give Bayonetta 2 money instead if this insults you.

Give B2 your money anyway

it's goddamn Bayonetta 2

I think we know that not everyone reviewing it would be a hardcore DMC/action game player. Brad clearly isn't. However, stating "The character action genre hasn't been this stylish or crazy in a good long while" having not played DMC3/4 or Bayonetta, probably the pinnacles of the "genre" it just comes off as uninformed and hyperbolic.

"Bayonetta 2 may be impenetrably difficult, but it will attract players with its flashy combat and insane Japanese weirdness. 3 stars, Brad Shoemaker, Giant Bomb.com"

"Bayonetta 2 is just more of the same old action game formula. For a game this unoriginal, the lowest score we will ever give is 5 out of 5."
-Shane Satterfield, GiantBomb.com

The same thing if it turns out great: Wii U owners praising it, Wii U haters crapping on it.

I love how owning a Wii U means I'll have to love Bayonetta 2 (a game we know pretty much nothing about at this point and a game whose predecessor didn't interest me in the least) according to you.

I think it's the same thing as DmC. People have already decided if it's good or bad and will rage if people don't agree with them

What I gather from the discussions going on is that old-school DmC fans are upset at the new direction the series has taken with their latest instalment. At this point, we don't know a single thing about Bayonetta 2: It's not the same situation at all.

They are angry not at how the game turned out but angry that a reviewer gave it a high score. I assume they hate the game and they want it to get bad reviews. It will be the exact same thing with B2; people will be raging both because they hate it and reviewers like it or that they love it and reviewer don't

I was responding to this:
What do you guys think will happen to the internet if Bayonetta 2 turns out to be a bad game?
That's what I THINK will happen. I don't recall saying you'll HAVE to love anything.

The announcement thread is evidence enough that many people have already written it off, as you say, before we know anything about it. I think for a lot of people, that'll stay the same whether the game lives up to the first or not.

If you are going to complain about the review of a game you haven't played yet because you think the score is too high (or the reviewer was), why do you even read reviews? Honest question, because I've felt for a long time that the only reason most people care about reviews is because they've already made up their mind and most people CRAVE affirmation of their opinions.

B-b-b-but 8.8!

Basically. No one gives a shit how the game turns out, it's about being 'right'. a review score they don't agree with prevents them from using it in a discussion about why the game is exactly what they say it is.

Woah, just blew my mind a little.

That's kinda sad that that's all most people care about...

So basically, what they are saying is if you are a fan of the franchise they are reviewing...don't listen to their review? What?

If you're a hardcore fan, take their review with a grain of salt. I'm sure there are hardcore DMC fans here like Dahbomb that can give that other perspective.

These critics play loads more games and don't spend as much free time delving hundreds of hours into some games as hardcore fans. There are some hardcore DMC fans who are also in that critic circle I'm sure.

Last one, I swear. I just couldn't leave Brad on a sad note.

I don't think that is true. I think a lot of people react poorly to bad review scores because they desperately want a game to be really good.

I think whether a game is 'good' or not is totally subjective and has nothing to do with the score. You could say it has to do with the actualy written review but it's still the opinion of each person that matters. Of course, a well written review that talks about how a game plays and it's up-sides and flaws can't be spammed and bitched at like a 1-2 digit number.

I am not saying it is rational.

I feel that is not really the point, at least for me personally. Also DMC is not a nice franchise, the games sold millions. I think this guy said it best in the DmC thread:

I'm willing to concede that DmC is a decent game. I was willing to concede months ago that it would be critically acclaimed and likely meet their sales projections. I also don't think that the most recent reception, regardless of how happy it makes you, excuses your previous actions as what essentially amounts to the role of a tenacious viral marketer.

And while you're celebrating the perceived success of this title (which may or may not be true sales-wise), you also celebrate the death of a franchise that defined and revolutionized this entire genre. The death of characters and settings that were unique and refreshing in a market filled with gritty soldiers, brown-haired caucasian everymen, and Hollywood cinematic experiences.

Classic DMC is still important to me. Maybe you've forgotten what its done, but I haven't. The series truly was something special, and now it simply is. I've played the demo extensively. I will rent the game at some point. I don't expect my opinion to change. DmC's existence is not worth the sacrifice of DMC. It never was, and it never will be.

I contend that a lot of people in here were desperate for another Stylish Action game and this one filled a necessary void for them. Launch day hype is a powerful thing. Let's see how things shake out in the end. I'm not giving up yet.

When I'm Dante

that DMC died long ago

True but I was alluding more to the fact that we got old style Dante in MvC3 but new Dante in Playstation All Stars. So the character that actually defined your previous console has been palette swapped for this new one because Capcom don't care.

Well, Capcom don't care about Playstation All Stars more like it

Anyway Marvel's a bad look if you want to talk about Capcom caring about their franchises yo. Joe and Amaterasu are in there, see if they ever get dragged out again.

If that guy said it best and is among the reasonable DMC fans, I don't want to hear from others. What a drama queen. Very close to that person who said Square Enix has shot themselves in the foot for FF 13 on 360 lol. No more DMC ever! It's dead! Capcom is dead to me! Consequences will never be the same!

I can't believe people get so upset about this stuff. Crazyness. Why would you want a game to be shitty? Even if you don't like it, or don't want to like, why get so upset that other people do?

I wonder if this type of ridiculousness happens on message boards about other products.

I hate honey nut cheerios! They taste like complete ass! The people who decided to add honey and nuts to my beloved toasted oat circles are traitors! Anyone who likes the way they taste is insulting the very existence of original cheerios and probably hates orphans too!

One time I wondered if there was a vacuum forum where they argue about vacuums the way we argue about video games.

Turns out there totally is.

We are not so different from other message boards and industries, it turns out.

Ha, I'd like to see that.

Also, Oreck? more like bOreck! amirite?!

Dyson Ball for life bitches!

edit: what have we done typo... what have we done? I nearly shot milk out my nose.

Dyson's trying too hard. It's a mediocre product, at best, but they get lots of sales with their hip, young approach to marketing.

Bissel? More like PISS-el. They used to stand for something, but just look at what they've become.

Kirby vacuums aren't kiddie vacuums, and they don't overheat and break like your junkie cleaning devices.

Everyone knows those trailers are faked, shot in a lab under perfect suction scenarios. I'll wait for the reviews.... as long as their not written by Brad Shoovermaker.

Man you're out of your mind. I've only used 1 or 2 vacuums in my life, but this new Bissell takes the company in a pretty sweet direction. In fact, I'd say that vacuums haven't been this stylish and crazy in a good long while.
