Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

I find articles like that worse than the torso preorder item. It's just so weird. Like, hey here's this figurine with boobs, and whoa you've got tits DO YOU WANT TO COMMENT ON THE TIT STATUE WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE BLOODY BOOBS CAUSE YOU GOT BOOBS AND YOURE A WOMAN SO LIKE WHAT DO YOU THINK????

I'm a guy, if they were selling a bloody torso of a guy I would find it gross. I dunno. Video game journalists continue to stumble all over themselves when anything related to women is involved.
...right. Because the article itself is about a random object and not the fact a major publisher was about to use it to promote and sell one of their biggest releases of the year which speaks volumes about the state of the industry as a whole.

I'm kinda loving the irony of this:

ArlI754.png

It's a good thing she brought it up on Twitter. Now it definitely won't be an issue.

I don't like Patrick's articles because they seem to be taking the place of actual content the site used to or needs to have. Less reading, more videos of stupid shit please. What happened to the idea of 'fun' over there?

What are you talking about? Patrick was hired to write articles like this for GiantBomb. Him existing as an additional member of the core crew and providing this type of content doesn't cause the site to have less video content than it used to (unless you have an explanation as to how this article prevents Jeff and Vinny and whoever else from recording a Quick Look).

I think the real issue here is where the hell is the DMC premium video?

also "went from hopefully to angry" doesn't make sense. games journalism!

Basically no female statue can ever portray a female in a sexualised manner or we have to go through this all over again?

The article is weird, the responses are to be expected. Basically it boils down to everyone is wrong.

It's just a European idea not thinking about the consequences of releasing it in the western market, who jump on top of anything like this with claws out.

It's a play on Venus De Milo is it not?

I don't find it appealing as a collector's item, it's a lapse in judgement by them. No need to write an article about it in my opinion.

I also am not sure why there needs to be pictures of each of the women, if you are going to write this article. What is the point that brings? To humanize the text? Seems to go against the point.

But not as permissive.

But almost equally as unprofessional...

This comes up a lot between me and mine, me belonging to a group of pretty avid cosplayers; even if you tell your professional world that you do cosplay, that doesn't mean you let it leak into every facet of your professional life. This was an interview for a news story, send a normal god damn headshot.

I appreciate that Patrick does make an attempt to get a female perspective on things like this, but I think it comes off a little heavy handed at times. I think the smarter thing for him to do if he wants there to be a greater female voice in the industry is not just to go to them for opinions on issues related to sexism, but just for all news. Get the female perspective on everything going on in the industry and not just certain things here and there.

Totally agree with this -- Patrick would take a lot less shit if he sourced female opinions on non-gender issues more frequently, like in his "Authorship of a Game" series.

Just a quick flip back through the archive, it's difficult to find a topic not about #1reasonwhy where a female member of the industry is interview.

Leading by example would be a far better way to address the issues torsogate reinforces about the industry's ambivalence toward women.

I agree. As an adult male the statue is slightly crass, and misjudged.

However I bore of Klepek's approach to journalism. His continuous struggle to ascertain the moral high ground through a conservative, politically correct and self-righteous attitude is tiresome, and to be quite frank ridiculous.

More than slightly crass.

Patrick might benefit from separating the editorial from the reporting. It's hard to tell when he's commenting and when he's just giving the facts, which leads to every story becoming about him.

I never claimed it was brilliant, but it's pretty obvious. Even if you're just looking at the famous full body one. It's a zombie game, go figure they would knock the head off for it.

This is a valid point. I am interested in reading the factual news. This allows me to form my own opinions on the matter which I will discuss if the matter is of some value to me.

What does not interest me Klepek's apparent need to constantly inject his opinion turning a simple exercise of reporting the news into an opinion piece.

And the statue being more than crass? In your opinion yes. To my friend? She thought it was ridiculous and funny. Not offensive.

But Patrick wouldn't write a story called "Eight Men, Eight Responses" about it.

Well that's because there's nothing sexual about a dude's chest. The difference is violent tones vs violent and sexual tones (two flavours that never really go well together). One you could get away with (although it'd be really fucking stupid still), and the other arguably makes the industry look bad.

I would hope he'd write an article headlined "How Dumb Is This Shit?" or "I Love Nonsense, But Come On Guys", though.

Wow, comparing the 'zombie bait' statuette to an actual statue just perfectly points out how fucking poorly the thing is made. It looks completely grotesque from an anatomical point of view.

Well that's because there's nothing sexual about a dude's chest.

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous, are you seriously suggesting there is absolutely no erotic imagery associated with a fit man's naked upper body? Do you not have hella semi-naked dudes on the packages of the brand of underwear you buy?

Yeah most people look at the Dead Island thing and go that's disgusting, i would never buy this, obviously using sex to sell in a torture porn kinda way. Doesnt need a pompous article written about it, like some poignant point is being made here.

True -- when the idiotic Hitman Facebook thing was announced, a piece not all the disimilar to the Torso stuff went up (minus any reactions, regardless of gender):

I think Patrick's intentions are fine -- soliciting opinions from women because he, in fact, is not a woman. He just needs to decide when he's reporting and when he's editorializing. The beginning of this piece is full of his opinion:

Deep Silver’s issued a questionable apology in response to the furor. The company did not discuss how this bundle even came into existence, and still hasn’t said whether it will be sold or not. One would hope not? I’ve asked the company for further clarification on that point, but as of publication, nothing has come back.

I don't disagree with his opinions, but I can't tell if he's reporting the reactions of the women sourced or using their opinions to solidify his stance. It's muddled, to the detriment of the conversation.

Zombi U should have been terrible. It's a reboot of an ancient IP nobody remembers on a new Nintendo console revolving around an unproven new controller gimmick that was reworked completely from a prior game, entirely changing its story and theme and graphics and mood and everything, in a relatively short period of time.
