The worth of the Gears remaster is how much you like Gears MP and Jeff really doesn't.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone based off playing the SP again.

Yeah, pretty much. I love gears multiplayer so for me the game is a good buy. Jeff hates it so for him it would be a really bad buy. The 2/5 is just Jeff's opinion, not an attempt at an "objective" score.

Anything would have been better than the ending to MGS4. Literally any single thing or combination of things.

It's not that he doesn't like it, he's expressed before how the multiplayer is fun against same skilled players or his example, which was playing against other journalists and people in the industry.

As someone who plays gears a lot, yeah the skill gap is huge compared to people who don't put the time into it and I can see why someone wouldn't like it, that's why I sort of agree with his review since it was mostly a SP review tbh.

It could have been worse. A full half of the ending could be devoted to closing the book on the guy what shits his pants a lot. Boy, that sure would be dumb.

I think Snake dying at the end of MGS4 would have been a lame attempt to get fans to cry at the end. People always expect the main character to die when a series comes to end so I'm glad they went another direction. Also, watching the MGS4 behind the scenes video his team was always fighting with Kojima about doing stuff and he got his way a lot. He was desperate to redo Sunny's voice acting and his team were so pissed because doing that as late in the development process as they were could have really fucked it up. I feel if he truly wanted to do that original ending, he would have.

That MGS talk could've been a lot more painful. I've actually been more frustrated with Dan's poor remembrance in the past, at least Jeff has the broad strokes down, more than I really expected him to recollect.

They should have two wheels: one for year and another for company. Whatever combination of press conference those wheels end on should be the subject of a streamed re-living.

I'd totally be down for some past conference commentaries. It would need to be a good mix between having enough dumb ass memorable moments while not being too recent or over-quoted.

And Jeff's suggestion of a wheel to put them on puts Giant Bomb one step closer to its inevitable merge with RedLetterMedia.

It's not though...

sure, technically, they recreated everything
but...they did it to suhc a degree that its EXACTLY the same but prettier

so really, for the player, whats the difference?
it's still the same game

jeff's point is valid

Oh man is that all they did? That is it? Really?

...you're missing the entire point of my post

when you PLAY the game, does it matter if they literally recreated the entire game? no, because you're essentially playing the SAME game

so besides being prettier than a straight up "remaster", its effectively the same thing for the player

thats jeff's entire point

It is a remaster of Gears of War. Of course you are playing the same game, what else would it be?

Jeff makes it pretty clear here and elsewhere that he doesn't think it's a particularly good remaster. The game's framerate being an inconsistent 30 seems to bother him a lot.

AI problems, fps drops and even bugs from the original are still present. Gears 1 gameplay haven't aged well and just doing a pretty copy paste is not gonna fix that you need to add, modify or remove mechanics to make the game feel good by 2015 standards.

Are you playing the game if your perspective has changed significantly? I don't think there is any way to capture or replicate that original experience in a way that you can say you're playing the same thing.

I was half listening to the podcast so I almost did a spit take when Jeff said "will not live past September 11th" when talking about the levels he created in the review copy.

And thank you Keyser Soze.

I thought Jason was joking when he said "Raised a kid on..." whatever it was, but now I'm listening to the Danswers podcast and he's 38 and and has a 22-ish year old son. Huh. Never would of thought.

God, that talk about Gabe brandishing a knife at his ISP to get the fastest internet speed made me lose it. In public.

Oh god Bombcrew, don't remind me about that death march to homogeneity last gen. God those were dark times.

If Snake were my real world friend, sure. I'd say live a little longer.

But narratively... I felt that everything, him being Old Snake, him holding a gun in his mouth in the trailer and saying "this is my final mission", him being infected with FoxDie which was going to kill him anyway.... I think everything about the setup and marketing of MGS4 was structured to give him that warrior's death to save the world... and they didn't do it. I felt robbed of what seemed to be the proper conclusion to the story they wanted to tell.

Even the "he's going to kill himself, but he doesn't" scene is kind of awkward. But they had to put something like that in there because they clearly teased that he was going to off himself.

It would have been the most memorable conclusion to a video game hero ever, that would have been talked about for generations. But what we got was a mixed bag of an ending that most people kind of forgot about.

Pretty much. It's the ME3 before there was a ME3.

Yeah, Jeff's fascination with Gabe's hobby leads to some real funny shit.
