Man Jeff asks the BEST fucking question about the original ending to MGS4 (spoiler for what did NOT happen)
where Snake would die.

"Do you think you would have had control during
the execution?
"

man.

MAN.

Absolutely that would have happened! And it would have given a totally different spin to the end of MGS3. First you (MGS3 spoilers)
killed the Boss]
. Then you
killed yourself.

I absolutely think the original plan for MGS4 was the better option. It fit better with everything they had done with the series and with the MGS4 marketing. The fact that they showed
Snake with a gun in his mouth in trailers years earlier meant that the audience was prepared
. Shying away from that was a big mistake.

Fuck. I wished that had happened. It's not like they spared Snake to appear in future sequels. He was a dying old man. What a waste. The "samurai" of the near-future military age deserved the samurai's ending....

I dunno, I never really agree about the concept of a soldier's death. A peaceful life after all that he has been through seemed like something he deserved.

I am of the opinion that if they didn't add in the final scene it would be a much more powerful ending.

I see MGS as a Japanese narrative at its core. The "western military soldier" theme is laid over top of it, but Snake is fundamentally a philosopher samurai to me.

And they always die at the end of the story. Preferably by their own hand.

I am of the opinion that if they didn't add in the final scene it would be a much more powerful ending.

Snake and
Big Boss
meeting was maybe the only thing I liked about the ending. It was hyper-indulgent to bring him back, but it was very satisfying to me as what was then the ending to the series.

I understand, which is why I said it would be much more powerful without the end bit. It would be a lot more poetic in a way.

I can't be mad at snake finally finding peace in another way other than through his death.

If Snake were my real world friend, sure. I'd say live a little longer.

But narratively... I felt that everything, him being Old Snake, him holding a gun in his mouth in the trailer and saying "this is my final mission", him being infected with FoxDie which was going to kill him anyway.... I think everything about the setup and marketing of MGS4 was structured to give him that warrior's death to save the world... and they didn't do it. I felt robbed of what seemed to be the proper conclusion to the story they wanted to tell.

Even the "he's going to kill himself, but he doesn't" scene is kind of awkward. But they had to put something like that in there because they clearly teased that he was going to off himself.

It would have been the most memorable conclusion to a video game hero ever, that would have been talked about for generations. But what we got was a mixed bag of an ending that most people kind of forgot about.

"We're motion-capturing this plant for the next week and a half."

Hahaha. Jeff's wit catches me off-guard sometimes. That kind of encapsulates Kojima's insanity perfectly.

How can Jason say that Heavy Rain has no real divergent paths? Characters can die in that and the story just continues.

It's the Telltale games where the choices don't matter.

For pretty much all these games you eventually loop back to the core story-line anyway though.

I always thought this was mostly a silly complaint anyway, as the choices definitely color your experience, even if they don't lead off into a completely separate story-line..

But Heavy Rain had different, explicit endings and had characters that could be permanently killed off.

Beyond Two Souls was much more linear in terms of its endings, but you could take so many different paths to get there that it did feel like a completely different game depending on your choices.

I mean, Quantic Dream games are far from perfect, but the narrative consequences thing is probably the one thing they did well.

I don't know if I play less than GB do, but every time I download a game on PS4 the next time I boot up the system it's always downloaded.
The only reason I don't go all in on digital is because of the stupid pricing.

Cool, guess I'll give this week's a listen. Need to go find the old MGS4 cast, interested to hear everyone's take when it was fresh.

Cannot believe Dan hasn't played Metal Gear Rising. Alright, there needs to be a Metal Gear Ryckert. Dan and Drew experiencing the insanity of MGR for the first time. Dan could play as he's more familiar with character action games than I assume Drew will be. Make it happen!

You can tell that Drew really has Metal Gear on the mind during the baby-delivery segment when he mentions Naomi. It's really great that he digs the series so much now.

I think he's predisposed to disliking it. He already said before it's not really Metal Gear so he doesn't really care.

Not much good can come from forcing him to play it.

The Draft Kings bit that aired during SummerSlam completely pushed me over the edge on the company. The whole thing looks so skeezy. This is coming from someone who does not mind gambling, and is happy to make a few sport releated bets on Paddy Power every now and then.

Dan thinks the story for God of War is good, so if he could look past his Metal Gear fandom, an action game that actually manages to do the murderous-psycho-versus-bigger-muderous-psychos story with the appropriate tone would probably blow him away.

But it's not written by Kojima so it can't be worth it.

Does anyone know what gamesradar page Jeff was referring to? All I found was a "Top 10 moments in Metal Gear" article. And god damn is that site hot garbage on android, fucking popup ad redirects you to the google play store, when you try to back out and go back to the article, the page is replaced with the redirecting ad and it closes the damn page

Most likely this http://www.gamesradar.com/metal-gear-solid-story/

What's wrong with gambling? Better than Loot Crap, where you're guaranteed to waste your money.

Skill based, fully legal.

I didn't say anything was wrong with gambling. Sorry to leave you disappointed if you are ready to rant. You can be like the rest of the Internet and just leave a rant anyway as if I was against gambling.

As somebody who has played fantasy sports for over a decade the idea that it is a "skill" is laughable.

I wrote a four word reply to you. If that's the makings of a rant, okay?

I cannot imagine Dan hating a game with Senator fucking Armstrong in it.

Do they have any plans to play Rising? I think it has the potential to be the craziest LP of the lot, there's scenes in Rising that could have come straight out of Air Force Gator, it's amazing.

Man, with PAX and the general length of MGSV, we're not getting a spoilercast till like...October at the earliest.

I REALLY want like, Jeff or someone to make Dan play Rising all the way through.

Come on, Metal Gear Ryck-sing. Book it.

I want Drew to decide for himself if he likes MGR. if we don't get a show out of it, I hope Drew takes a look at it himself when he has time.

I think his point was pretty valid though. If it's just an HD remaster with not much added is it really doing a service to the franchise? Especially at $40.

Yeah, he does have some valid arguments against it.
It seems like a decent package to me but I haven't played it yet.
