Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

rofl this is so funny, i bet lemon deleted the save file. he's always the sabotager.

lol they wasted 3 tonics again on the second playthrough that boss. and keep going back and forth in the forest

how come everyone is getting so hung up on them completing the game as fast as possible, the mistakes is what makes it interesting imo.

Continuing on with this on the original cartridge after the battery has already proved faulty seems like a horrible, horrible idea.

They should have the interns buy another cartridge, replace the battery, trace and repeat every step/mistake and play to the exact point in time as a back-up.

Yeah, they don't give a shit. I'm out.

Its weird, they find more entertainment in potentially losing their progress than actually playing the game. If they are playing the game to shrug it off and skip all dialogue like it's a chore only to stumble every step after that, I don't really see the point... other than cracking jokes here and there, which Patrick is terrible at that. Not feeling this one, honestly.

Mistakes can make it more entertaining. Repeating the mistakes just makes it tiring.

Watching Gamecenter CX, which is essentially an edited down version of the Endurance Run, I wonder if they wouldn't have been better served playing obscure Japanese games instead of Chrono Trigger.

Maybe if you've never played CT before it wouldn't be a problem, but if you know the game, it can be frustrating at times. I suppose the same thing happened with Persona 4, where I didn't know they were making mistakes until I started playing the game myself. (Although BUFU was amazing...)

It's not every single thing.

They've made the same exact mistake twice, from not reading the same exact text in the same exact place, and wasted probably a half hour's worth of time doing so.

I just don't see the point in saying "I'm going to play this game all the way through for 40 hours" and then refusing to pay attention to the game you're playing. You're skipping the text, you're barely engaging in the combat, what part of the game are you actually looking at?

Agreed, I was semi-on board with this ER but last episode was painful to watch and this most recent one was brutal seeing them carelessly fight the boss just so "It's okay, we can die again and just do the fight better"... What? Just fight properly or reset now. And then leaving without princess (question: Why are you guys in the dungeon? Why did you come to the past? There's someone integral to all of this right? Nope, killed the monster, let's leave.) And then forgetting where the princess was and that... they're even supposed to be finding her/that she's missing?

Ugh....

They should've done the Metal Gear HD collection for their ER. That would've been golden.

Also, it's been 15 years, but is Chrono Trigger really that hard? I seem to remember it being a fairly easy game, not nearly challenging as a couple of people made it out to be.

They'd be stuck at the beggining of MGS2 for hours trying to get in the hole in the fence.
I had no problem with that part when I played through MGS2 years ago but watching that QL I was as stumped as they were on what to do.

There are a few challenging parts, but for the most part, it's an easier game.

I didn't play it until the DS version, so I'm not sure if that has any balance changes or something, but I thought CT was pretty easy.

Chrono Trigger IS an easy game, first time I played through it was the DS version and I remember dying like once or twice in the whole game.

Why didn't they just replace the battery in the beginning............

That makes NO FUCKING SENSE.

LOLOLOL its funny because the save can die at any time!!!111!

Is there really anything weird about that?

Not only are they playing it while talking which no doubt distracts a bit at times.

But does how good they are at games really make any difference to how good they are judging their quality?

I don't think so.

hahahahahahahaha WOW.

A typically trollish move by Ryan. Sometimes I really do think he enjoys fucking with the Giant Bomb audience more than he does entertaining them.

I think the reason is because if the ER isn't well received they can say 'oops, battery died. All saves gone, saves no longer work :(' and be done with it. They'd have endured as long as they can and no longer have to spend time playing the game.

Given Patrick saying in the first episode that Halloween is coming up, sounds like these episodes have been sitting in the can for at least a month.

I'm guessing they've already recorded the entire ER.

True, but that specific part of the game is not very well telegraphed to player and there is very little room for error (like running back and forward through the same places and getting in the same fights for 20+ minutes). Once you figure it out, it's simple. Crawl under the wire. If they were treating that part like they're playing Chrono Trigger the colonel would come on codec and say "Raiden, crawl under the broken fence on the top left of the screen" then they would skip that five times and run in circles for an hour.
Aaaanyways, the sheer hilarity of the metal gear games (2,3, and I'm assuming Peace Walker) and outlandishness would make for a great ER no matter who was playing. Plus there would be actual voice acting for them to riff off of.

Didn't Patrick make a Chrono Trigger reference in the latest Bombcast that nobody even acknowledged?

It's like the Endurance Run is existing in a parallel universe.

Wait, the cartridge has failed already. :( I've only seen up to Part 2 at the moment.

I'm not entirely sure how long this is going to last, sometimes Ryan seems totally disinterested with other parts of GiantBomb sometimes. And Ryan seems terrible at JRPGs, he blows through text, never checks obscure things and I hated watching him in the first part fail to navigate the menu to equip things, it was painful.

:lol @ the battery failing them, and they don't even replace it. The ultimate game timer, risking your SAVES, man.

This is amusing for the wrong reasons.

After 4 episodes I can't take anymore of this, between ignoring text, wandering around aimlessly for extended periods, Patrick's bad jokes that he keeps repeating, and their blatant stupidity in not changing the battery after it failed once, it's just not fun to watch.

Good luck to them and the people who are actually going to watch this entire thing.

It's an easy game for anybody who doesn't work at Giant Bomb,

Or anyone that hasn't played a jrpg in a while and is used to health gen and other tropes of modern gaming.

I recall going to inn/sleeping anywhere pretty damn often, but Ryan seems to be on the ball somewhat. It doesn't hurt that the game seems to throw enough tonics about to keep the most aggressive players alive.

I pretty much fast forwarded this eps until the hilarious trial thing with Ryan flipping out.

God damn it. Phoenix Wright was one of my favorite QL's of the site, and I've been begging for a ER for that series for a while. Would work great....

I'd watch this three times. I'd probably rage three times too.

I've played Chrono Trigger so many times, I've realized if I ever watch somebody else play it for the first time I would be a terrible backseat driver/gamer. I have to resist yelling at the screen. Although forgetting Marle a second time is just....wow.

I am constantly yelling at the screen, but it's often times just for the amusement of my roommate, who bursts out laughing when I do it. It's fucking frustrating to watch these guys fail their way through this game. How can you forget the very reason you came to the past?! TWICE!

These guys are so horrible at video games it blows my mind. How can you suck so much at such an easy game? If they're having trouble now, they're going to get eaten alive later in the game.

"So, we're taking her home. Where is home?"

SHE'S THE PRINCESS! GOD DAMMIT!

The endurance run isn't canon, obviously.

I think I’m done with this ER until there is a best of youtube video.

I like my let’s plays to be either really informative or funny. This is neither.

I haven't watched today's episode yet. How many minutes does it take to get to new content?

23 minutes in.... out of a 33 minute video.

edit:
Technically 25 minutes in, if you want to skip the forest combat and Ryan's fear of mushrooms (which is actually pretty funny).

I find the bitching almost as entertaining as the videos themselves. :lol

The appropriate response to today's video is to laugh, shake your head a bit, and move on. Nobody cares that you find it so offensive that they screwed up.

You guys take video games too seriously.

Seriously why would they do this?

To have an excuse to quit the endurance run when it eventually happens.

(Not really, more likely it's just to increase the tension for viewers)

Without the moaning this thread would be less than a page. There just isn't a great deal to talk about other than the little annoyances of their play-style.

Little? How do you not remember something you did the very day before?

I am more amused by you guys going nuts than the Endurance Run itself.
Yeah must be a GAF thing... or nope I see it on the video talkback too, and the GB Forums and on twitter. Oh okay.

Given how little attention they pay and some of the completely obscure things to do in PW, that would be rough.

I'd pay double what I pay to subscribe to GiantBomb if they just cloned Vinny and changed the site to VinnyBomb.
If I wasn't lazy, I would do what the Russian GB site did, except it would simply be all of the Vinny content.

I did actually intend to watch the entirety of this episode, but after seeing how that first fight went down I skipped straight to the trial part.

I don't think I missed much.

Well, that's shitty, if it's true. The previous ERs, well at least P4's ER, were great because they were happening in quasi real time.

Recording them ahead of time is probably way easier from a logistics standpoint. Plus, there's nothing time-related about them so doing them in semi-real time gains nothing, and then they don't have people trying to send them spoilers or game guides all the time (or they do, but they don't matter by the time they get them).

plus if it's all in the can, they can just sit back and laugh at all the GAF bickering without having it influence the ER.

I agree, it's like how the best games are made without any sort of input from the fans/audience or playtesting....

This post doesn't even make sense. Apples and oranges, dude.

Besides, the point of the ER isn't to have the best run possible, or even an above-average run. It's to show two dudes playing through the game and enjoying the experience.
