Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Make the interns play up to where they are.
lol, you know what? This wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Put it up on their YouTube channel for the curious.

It's too bad they seem to have recorded a bunch of episodes already.

You guys, I just really want to see if they name Robo "Bobo" or "Brobo".

I don't know what you people are bitching about. You just want to see a bland ass playthrough of the game? The battery thing and them screwing up multiple times in a row was hilarious.

Word.

I find it pretty amusing to be honest. I've already played Chrono Trigger a million times through, so seeing them goof up is what I enjoy most about this endurance run. If you are watching for this complete experience and to soak in the story for the first time, I think you are doing it wrong.

This post doesn't even make sense. Apples and oranges, dude.

Besides, the point of the ER isn't to have the best run possible, or even an above-average run. It's to show two dudes playing through the game and enjoying the experience.

Obviously their different. I'm just making the simple point that "Advice from the fans/readers/audience can help improve the experience for everyone involved, thus creating a better use of everyone's time."

Serious business.

Well, that's shitty, if it's true. The previous ERs, well at least P4's ER, were great because they were happening in quasi real time.

Maybe I'm wrong?

Perusing Jeff's Formspring, I found this (question was about whether he's watching the ER):

Jeff said:
Nope! My only tip was to not record too many in advance because then the small talk is about things that happened waaay too long ago, which makes the whole thing sound weird when it's finally posted.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm laughing at how terrible they are.

I don't see how not sucking at the game precludes it from interesting. Maximillion is a great example of a gamer that is absolutely wicked at practically everything, yet all his videos are informative and insightful (though not particularly funny).

I would be fine if it were funny, but it's not. It's just frustrating to watch, because they're playing incredibly badly.

sux to be you, I'm really enjoying this endurance run so far.

Did you also like the Shadow of the Colossus QL? Painfully frustrating to watch.

Although to be fair their performance in CT is not as bad... yet. Ryan is definitely capable of Brad-levels of ineptitude, though.

edit: and I like the saving thing in theory, that's fun.

The SotC QL was infuriating, this is just funny. It's really not that bad.

it's a goat, it's a goat, it's a dancing goat, that goat's dancing, why are you dancing dancing goat, oh yeah girl tonic "tonic" """"tonic""""" get it because it's like gin and tonic, dancing goat, look at all the g's your getting, all the gold, you have so much gold, it's so much g's for so many tonics

Considering he takes forever to choose between Fire Whirl and X-Strike, and chose active mode, I can't wait to see him fight some future bosses.

And this is why Vinny should have been sitting in that second seat.

They should really choose Wait. Ryan chooses options slowly, but in some later battles (especially the sidequest battles if they're going to attempt them), that can probably lead to humorous outcomes. Hmm... haha, yeah, keep it on Active.

I miss Vinny. He would've read the text in funny voices. :(

I think Ryan and Patrick are a far better combo than I initially thought. My only complaint is they should pay more attention to what the game is telling them. I'm all for getting a kick out of watching them tackle a difficult situation (and there will be many), but when that situation comes from brushing past what the game is specifically telling them to do... well... that almost feels like manufactured difficulty. Like the MGS Collection QL :/

I decided to buy the DS version of Chrono Trigger (only $10 because of Amazon's $5 off!) because of the endurance run. I'm not loving this run, but I'm liking it enough. I don't get all the hate for Patrick, he's not the best, but he's not horrible. Cut him a little slack.

Mistakes can be funny, but I don't really see how it can continue being funny if they keep making the same one. I think Ryan and Patrick are all right together. I wish at least one of them would pay attention.

I still prefer Vinny + anybody

Same. But i already got the ds version... fuck, need to buy it again... only version I don't have is the upcoming ios version T____T

Its weird, they find more entertainment in potentially losing their progress than actually playing the game. If they are playing the game to shrug it off and skip all dialogue like it's a chore only to stumble every step after that, I don't really see the point... other than cracking jokes here and there, which Patrick is terrible at that. Not feeling this one, honestly.

Unfortunately, this is exactly how I'm starting to feel. Why are they just charging around blindly and not reading anything?

reading... in ... games?

I have no clue when the last time Ryan played a jrpg, and Patrick mentioned the last one he completed was FFX, which came out a decade ago.

And if people ever have a question for Patrick, just ask it here. http://www.formspring.me/patrickklepek

He does tend to respond within a day.

I don't mind Patrick too much. *shrug*

He should try to keep the "Oh, I remember this stuff about Zenan Bridge and
Zombor
" stuff under wraps more, though.

It doesn't help that Ryan, like Jeff, doesn't seem to care for story in games at all except in a "so bad it's good" sort of way.

I really enjoy them playing such an easy game so badly. This is entertaining to see them get confused by a game with really simple mechanics.

The number one thing Jeff loved the most about P4 was the story and the characters insofar as he's gone on record as not being interested in a Persona 5 so much a "Persona 4-2".

Somehow I feel this may be the first endurance run that ends before the game is actually finished for whatever reason (lack of interest/cartridge crapping out) etc

Maybe they're almost counting on that, and that's the reason why Ryan isn't taking Will up on his offer to replace the battery.

I agree, but not necessarily in the context of reviewers who's opinions on other games I trust. It is a little embarrassing, Ryan diffused the situation with humor, but still a little embarrassing.

I saw that coming the moment Ryan kept saying the endurance run was about "playing the game until you cant play it any more" ether because you finish it or you give up or the game breaks.

Dude said it a few times so I guess it was giving himself a out in case he gets bored.

The more I watch this endurance run the more painful it gets. It honestly feels like rape to see a pair of grown game industry veterans be THIS bad at a very easy game. I mean, come on how many of us got stuck in Chrono Trigger EVER, even as kids? It's a huge disservice to the game (since i'm sure it makes it look awful to anyone who hasn't played it, I would certainly think it does), and a huge disservice to the notion that these guys are remotely trustworthy in regards to forming opinions about a product.

I have not played it and I never thought they make the game look bad, they play the game badly, or they are really stuck. It's not as entertaining as the other two ER's yet though.

They aren't really, truly into it. Which means they do not care, they do not focus, they miss story bits and then wander around aimlessly whining about their own inability to concentrate.

This is a travesty of an endurance run.

watching this kind of makes me glad i never bought the DS version :/

So in other words, the fact that they can't take a game seriously and are HORRIBLE at it, is actually deterring you from probably a top 3 all time game?
I need to break things suddenly.
For whatever it's worth, their file that is like 2 hours now, is probably about 40 minutes into the game if you aren't a complete fucking retard. Even the first time through. For someone that's played the game they're like 20 minutes in.

Well, it does! This is the equivilent of me coming and posting a video playing...idk Modern Warfare (Or any other game generally liked, ocarina of time or something), and doing everything horrendously WRONG to make it look bad. Even if they don't intend it to, it DOES.

Dude, rape? Maybe it pisses you off, but it's a goddamned series of video-game playthrough videos on the internet. You come off sounding like a crazy person.

And that's not even going into the merit of the complaints. People are talking as if Ryan was holding his control backwards and going 'why can't I move?'. They're playing a little carelessly, but it's not like anything has happened in the game. This is still the intro, and people are going off into 'how can they be so bad at videogames' histrionics. They skipped a couple of text boxes. That's about it. And before people go 'Bu-bu-bu Jeff', in the P4 ER a couple of hours in they weren't sold on the game either. They were still very much in a 'oh, anime' mood. (Jeff's note about not skipping text was for our benefit, not necessarily theirs -- also note that some of the prize bitchers in this thread were also bitching about how they sucked at games during that ER.)

lol at comparing it to rape. Giantbomb threads always gets some pathetic posts (demanding excuse from Brad and crying at them for not playing PS3 version) but rape one beats most.

They're playing more than carelessly. Again, these are people that we actually trust opinions about games from? They can't even remotely pay attention to what is going on or use a little bit of deductive reasoning (I'll be nice and not call it common sense this time) in how to proceed. It makes the game look bad, it makes them look bad, what is there to like about it again?

The biggest problem with this video series is that Patrick has played the game. It defeats the whole purpose of it, if you ask me.

It honestly feels like rape to see a pair of grown game industry veterans be THIS bad at a very easy game. I mean, come on how many of us got stuck in Chrono Trigger EVER, even as kids?

God damn dude. It's honestly incredibly pathetic to see you write a post like this. To compare this to rape not only shows that you have no grasp on the reality of what rape is, but it also shows that you take your precious memories of a god damn video game far too seriously.

I remember getting stuck the first time I play Chrono Trigger. I have very strong memories of going through the forest a few too many times, to the point where when I replay the game, I actually dread going through the forest because it brings those memories back. So you can add one person to your list of people who got stuck at this very juncture the first time they played the game. Sorry I'm not a badass like you at video games.

Additionally, In episode four, Ryan and Patrick are deliberately trying to rush through the game to catch up to where they were before. We also don't know how long it's actually been since they played (between episode 3 and 4). It's obviously been at least been a day, perhaps more. Maybe they went on a bender over the weekend. Maybe they're really tired because they came into the office earlier to record. The point is that you don't know.

And this is to everybody with hyperbolic bitching in this thread.

Allow me to repeat something people: this is a freaking video game! When you get this worked up over how good or bad someone you don't even know is at the game, you reflect the absolute worst of the gamer stereotype.

Sorry for ranting. But you cannot toss the word rape out here so casually without getting me really riled up.

That might be why Patrick seems to be paying less attention, because he remembers the game. Except it turns out he doesn't seem to remember it that well.

No one says you have to like it. No one says you have to trust their opinions on games. I do, because as a whole so far I've agreed with them more than I've disagreed. And it's a non sequitur to state that somehow them not playing CT the way you'd like invalidates their opinion on games.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this ER. I think Patrick and Ryan(?) work pretty well together, and it's WAY better than the solo boring Let's Plays you find on YouTube. To those complaining you don't like Patrick and Ryan and you don't like Chrono Trigger....don't watch? If anything you should be grateful that Vinny and Jeff are free to do another ER of a game you probably won't hate as much. My worry is that the battery in the cart will die before they get far and then the ER will just end.

This is the internet, last I checked hyperbole was a major part of it. I could just as easily say you're getting too worked up over a post on a forum, at the end of the day it bothers me that people will watch these videos and OPT not to play the best game ever made, but I won't lose any sleep over it and you know it, so why make such a passionate response (to play devil's advocate to your own argument)?

You can say I'm over the top, but I find it hard to believe anyone can DEFEND the integrity of the journalism at play here. Even if you find this specific game to be unimportant, surely all of us can recognize that the connection between being respected game journalists and an expectation of some videogaming competency should exist. This is the kind of thing that if they had written an actual review showing it (Such as that old Mass Effect review by whoever-the-fuck-don't-want-to-look-it-up where he clearly was just incredibly bad at the game), we would burn any other reviewer alive for on these forums. Why should they get a pass because they're Giantbomb again? Even if they say they like the game despite it being thoroughly 'confusing' from their perspective, it really brings into question the capabilities of these individuals to be rating games in the first place when they can't experience them at a level even remotely approaching a standard gamer.

It's almost as bad as watching someone run into the first goomba on Mario Brothers over and over, and then realizing that this is the person whose opinions are disseminating to your peers. It SHOULD bother people.

That might be why Patrick seems to be paying less attention, because he remembers the game. Except it turns out he doesn't seem to remember it that well.

The way "I like" ? You mean...the only way to play it? Would you trust an opinion of someone who booted up Halo and ran around for 2 hours shooting at the walls in the first room? I ALMOST thought Patrick remembered the game clearly and was just trying not to be a nag early on (it kept seeming like he knew what to do but didn't want to say, or would suggest but back down when Ryan ignored him), but clearly that stopped being the case somewhere along the way. It's not that hard to carry on a conversation and still comprehend some basic text, even at 'skip it' speeds.

I am enjoying it but I just still don't think Chrono Trigger works that well with a endurance run. There's no dialogue that was hilarious in both Persona and Deadly Premonition ER's but instead lots of text which they often skip. It's better than the lets plays on youtube for sure, just not as good as the other ER's. Some criticism is not bad. Comparing it to rape is pretty fucking dumb though.

Also I really don't think Jeff and Vinny are going to make any ER's soon, Jeff sure sounds like he is not up for it everytime anyone has asked since the deadly premonition one.

Teenage girls complain less than some people in this thread.

Comparing the endurance run to rape...sigh. At least it's Friday.

I hope you people know that this thread is absolutely hilarious. Maybe more so than the Endurance Run. Everyone needs to chill out, especially since they haven't even fought the harder bosses yet :lol
