Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

You will never be under-leveled if you fight everything in your path; I don't consider that grinding. You should only avoid enemies if you are revisiting an area you passed through a long time ago or if you are running low on resources.

No, that's not grinding. I skipped battles and never went back through parts to fight extra enemies.

All I ask for out of an ER is enthusiasm. Pat and Ryan had that shit in spades this episode.
Such an important factor, yeah.

If they continue through the game halfway competently as they did in the last couple episodes, this should stay fun to watch. Patrick is nudging Ryan in the right direction more often and has been taking a more active role during the fights and it's improved the run by a lot.

I'll say first time playing CT fairly new to RPGs I struggled withat that point too. Of course now I just go
Buy a load of mid tonics and assign someone to be medic basically, IIRC Frog Crono and Lucca are the party I like there...during Castle Marle and Frog as Icy Water wrecks everything there; yes, backtracking to the end of time is faster than battling any other way)

I'll start watching the ER at this spot.

oh man, patrick, why

edit: gets better after the first 5 minutes, lolz. I think they're high when they do these videos.

Man that first Magus attempt...

Barrier Change / Only Water damages
Patrick: "Use Lightning"
Ryan: "I'm gonna try water"
*Ryan uses Water and deals damage

Barrier Change / Only Shadow damages
*Ryan uses Lightning
*Lightning heals Magus

Two rounds later:

Barrier Change / Only Water damages
Patrick: "Try Lightning again"
*Lightning heals Magus
*Ryan uses Water and deals damage
Patrick: "Use Shadow"
*Shadow heals Magus

*Party wipes.
Patrick: "So Lightning and Shadow heal him at all times?"

/facepalm

...They're not going to attack him with the sword that they needed to get before taking him on are they?

Y'know, the whole reason for the quest before fighting Magus.

Also some dual techs would be nice. It's fun to see them figure out the major mechanics though.

These last couple episodes were fine. They were figuring stuff out, making tactical adjustments, and only died to Magus once.

Good stuff.

I know. I mean, unless Patrick is trying to get Ryan to mess up he surely must remember what to do (use what it says damages him). I mean, Ryan had the right idea and the game seemed pretty clear with what element does damage.

7 minutes in and my opinion of Patrick is rapidly lowering. Why the fuck is he trying to over think the game obviously telling them what to do? I have enjoyed him on the bombcast for the most part, but come on son..

He misunderstood the barrier change as Magus changing to that type (He thinks the "Only Fire/Water/Lightning/Shadow damages" is referring to Magus only using that type of attack so therefore Magus is now a Fire/Water/Lightning/Shadow type) so he thinks you are supposed to use the weakness of that type e.g use lightning on water type Magus.
It isn't until Ryan tells him that he realises the "Only Fire/Water/Lightning/Shadow damages" is telling you what to do, not describing what Magus is doing.

Patrick made the Magus battle sound way more complicated than it was. Stop overanalyzing it. Just follow what the game says and attack accordingly. Easy battle...

That's it. I'm out!

I'm going to go watch dumb people fall down on a TV network from now on!

Yea I'm out. It's partly my fault for having played the game before but watching the Masamune fight was the breaking point. They don't understand enemy weakness even when the game tells them and still don't understand how dual techs work. They also seem to be trying to hard to funny and ignore text about where to go which really sucks when they later wander around for 10 minutes befuddled.

Outside of the first attempt, I think they did okay this episode. At least they were able to beat Magus the second time, and Ryan was finally able to get into an attack-heal pattern.

I think Ryan would've beaten Magus on the first try if Patrick didn't keep asking him to experiment.

This endurance run is reminding me just how great Chrono Trigger is. I played it quite a while ago and I think back then I didn't notice/realize all the good things it does. Even though Ryan/Patrick might be evidence to the contrary, I dig how it gradually and subtly teaches elements of the combat system which are then required to face the boss instead of overt tutorials. Lightning on the dinosaurs, or elemental weaknesses/strengths in Magus' Castle. Just strong fundamental game design that a lot of games don't always do. Also does a lot of great things story-wise, solid characters and lots of clever time travel situations.

Yeah, I think Patrick just expected it to be more complicated than it really was. I know I did when I first played.

Its just hilarious to me to see you all get so pissed about them trying to figure the game out. Its almost as if you are all in the room yelling like you want to play. I think the video is doing its job lol.

My favorite has got to be Patrick's claim that lightning is somehow the elemental opposite of Shadow.
Isn't Crono's element in the Japanese version something like "Heaven/Holy"? It actually makes a lot of sense.
"Barrier change / Only Water damages"
"Try lightning!"

edit: TelemachusD did it better.
He was thinking in Pokémon logic. He's using water attacks, so he obviously is weak to electricity!

You can tell how badly Patrick wants to grab the controller and play himself. I love how nonchalant Ryan is about everything. He doesn't care about the common RPG knowledge you can apply to the game, he's just playing what's in front him. Still, there's something very weirdly excruciating about watching these two as compared to Jeff and Vinnie. You also learn how terrible these guys (and probably most reviewers) are at games. I think Vinnie is the only one I'd trust to sit next to me and play co-op anything.

Decided to jump back into this ER after missing the last few episodes after how disappointed I felt in their performance in a previous episode... guess I picked a good time?

That made me lose my mind. Chrono Trigger's one of those good introductory RPGs because it implicitly teaches the player the core mechanics of how RPGs work (even if you don't go to the Mayor's House at the beginning of the game) by gathering data via talking to NPCs, learning enemy weaknesses, learning the elemental attributes and oppositions, etc. The Magus battle is essentially the game's final exam with regards to how well you know your characters' elemental attributes.

The game even tells the player what to do during the Magus battle. No need for overanalysis.

At least they seemed to learn the second time around. Ah, I'll keep watching because my favourite bits of the game are coming up and they seem more enthusiastic about the game now. :D

It is. The original Japanese was 天 (sky/heaven). Edit: And Luminaire, Crono's final spell, is also classified as a Light spell in Chrono Cross.
