Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I'm starting to feel like I'm getting trolled with this endurance run. There is no way these guys are genuinely playing this stupidly.

Magus
fits in better with the CT crew more then people let on. He just detached from civilization when he became the
fiendlord.
He also was a spoiled brat as a kid so you could say his people skills didn't have time to develop before zipping away.

I over-analyze CT but take a look at this pic to see where the boss fits.
http://i.imgur.com/YQOyg.png (SPOILERS)

He in there. He parallels quite closely with Brono IMO.

I think he fits in quite well. He is, after all, a misunderstood good guy. He intended on summoning Lavos in order to kill it.

All the same, Dr. Doom is sometimes a good guy. Magus is basically Chrono Trigger's Dr. Doom (Future Foundation era)

Also, I don't think there's any point in spoilering Magus' name. The game is almost 20 years old now.

"defense power up when attacked...I don't really know what that meeeaaaannsss...."

....WHAT?!

Jesus fucking Christ...

I read these sorts of comments before watching the current video sometimes, and it is never as bad as you make it seem.

So they are not playing the game exactly like you would, the sky is falling!

Lol at assuming Iron Helm is better than Rock Helm.

Sometimes logic just doesn't work in these games.

They're still having trouble with the physical/magical dichotomy, I see.

"What does that mean?"
"Try lasers."

I kid because I love.

Literally seconds later Patrick explains, people can have brain farts especially when it comes to battle systems in games.

They never correct their gameplay style though, they continue to use Cat Attack rather than Duel attacks like they should've done. Using the Robo/Ayla separately made the fight take longer than it had to. For every -1 to his defense from Chrono using Lightning they added +2 attacking separately with the other two.... and then there's the whole Volt Bite fiasco, he would've died far quicker had they been using that.

Well of course, but you are telling me that you have never been stuck in a system you think is working during a game and then you randomly find/read a whole different strategy that would have kicked the guy's ass so much quicker?

These guys are playing the game for basically the first time (I know Patrick played it a long time ago), they do not have the advantage of having this as one of their favorite games that they have played multiple times.

But in the end they won, and they won easily.

It's not like they're going 'gee, these fights suck, they're so long!'. It's Chrono Trigger. You can play as sloppily as Ryan does and still breeze through.

Even that doesn't hold, since I didn't make nearly as many mistakes as they have over the course of this ER. I'm not shouting at my monitor about how they're "doing it wrong", but nobody should really be defending their playstyle either.

I am not defending them per-se, more defending different play styles all around. So you didn't make nearly as many mistakes, that doesn't mean me or another person wouldn't make more than you.

People tend to take these videos very personally towards their own gameplay experience with the same game, which is understandable, but just not reasonable in the long run. This same syndrome happens with Quick Looks and the like.

Who gives a flying fuck about the speed and efficiency it takes for them to kill a boss? It would be one thing if they kept dying over and over and over because they were doing something wrong, but they're not, not even close. Honestly.

My favorite team was always Crono, Marle, Magus. Mostly because Magus is just a fucking badass.

/brofist

Crono-Marle-Magus or Crono-Frog-Magus has always been my final party build in Chrono Trigger. I also always save up all my Magic Tabs and just dump them into Magus as soon as I get him to make him a god.

I didn't like Marle until I found out her tech where she throws the giant ice block would do 4k later in the game. I used her to finish the game nearly every time.

Ever been to a football (or "soccer") match? I think the backseat gamers in here are cheering them on, maybe enjoy watching these episodes more than us well-meaning, modest observers. This is very typical fan behavior. If there's no Sun Tzu and tactical master plan behind every pass, tackle and shot -- you'll hear the vilest things pouring out of their mouths. They're the most ardent fans, nonetheless.

agreed. It's one thing to be annoyed when they were earlier ignoring directions from quest givers and whatnot, but getting angry over tactics even when their methods are still working? nuh uh.

Any landing you can walk away from...

I was watching my friend play Arkham City recently, and he fights by just mashing the attack button. Sure, he could be freely flowing between dudes, racking up insane combos, but he was perfectly happy playing in his current style.

I'm still suffering from Chrono Trigger withdrawal since finishing last week. I might have to stick a Dragon Quest game in just to scratch the Toriyama itch.

The Volt Bite discovery had me rolling...
KuGsj.gif
. And assuming Iron Helm was better than Rock Helm despite the stats showing differently. Amazing.

"Defense power up when attacked"

"I don't really know what that means... D:"

Okay, this episode was hilarious. I don't think they did so badly this time around. C'mon duders. They could've gotten it done efficiently, but I reeeeeally want to them to get to
Zeal
as quickly as possible. When I first played this game, that location blew my mind. Actually, I remember the Black Tyrano battle blowing my mind back then too.

I do, however, think they should feed Bobo some Speed Tabs when they get them if they insist on using him so they don't have to wait for this ATB bar to fill up.

I wonder whether they'll discover Ayla's charm ability later on and start stealing equipment, elixirs and tabs. I never played the game without doing that, maybe it'll be more challenging without artificial stat improvements.

I haven't watched a few episodes for a while until now, but they didn't discover Charm yet? Probably because they're busy bashing through enemies to get through the game easily. I don't think they're going to find Charm useful for their run, tbh.

Even though Charm is really useful and beneficial to you in the long run, I don't think they're going to use it. Even if you don't use Charm to steal stuff, or if you don't use Tabs to power up your characters, you can still get through the game without too much trouble. That's the beauty of the entire game, really. It's very accessible to both newcomers and veterans alike. And I guess it doesn't really hold the player's hand much either, lol.

I noticed that. There's never a reason to grind, unless you want to unlock all techniques for every character, and even then it's minor. If you don't run and simply fight the majority of the enemies you encounter, you'll beat the game and do all the side quests without ever fearing for your life, without ever being bored. Although, as I said, I'm always on tabs (steroids). I can't stand how slow Robo and Marle are.

Marle is not slow.

Lucca and Robo are slow. Marle is middle tier in speed but you should just be self-hasting. With the right setup it is 2mp and Marle will be ready for all of Crono's dual tech setups. You also boost her cure1 which will do full heal for 1mp (lolz). Giving Crono most of the tabs except magic is the best method.

I'll say it again, Marle + Crono is godlike. All those tabs that are being used to make the robot and ribbit acceptable in stats could be given to the real strength of CT. It's like giving special treatment to inferior players on a sports team so they can match the superstar instead of boosting the superstar to god-tier.

My tier lists for vanilla which I believe are quite accurate.

Player
S Tier - Crono
A Tier - Marle, Ayla
B Tier - Magus
Bottom Tier - Frog, Robo, Lucca
*Frog is extremely close to B tier

As always the disclaimer here is that there are NO bad teams in CT. My favorite team is 1000AD. There are simply teams that own harder then others. And that's what I've put time into figuring out many times over.
I haven't watched a few episodes for a while until now, but they didn't discover Charm yet? Probably because they're busy bashing through enemies to get through the game easily. I don't think they're going to find Charm useful for their run, tbh.
You have to know the ins and outs of the game. Experienced players would be bat-shit insane not to have Ayla on their team @ boss fights except on NG+. There is a certain charm I think around 3/4 of the play-through that is a MUST steal. It's like stealing an ultimate weapon in FF.

Also, it appears I can't resist the party convoys. Retirement can wait.

I was just gonna say... :lol I thought you were going to stay out of these!

Since they want to power through the game, that's why I don't think they're going to use Charm often... unless they're going to keep Ayla in their party (which I could see them doing and using Robo to heal). Since boss encounters seem to be a bit of an endurance for them right now--especially since they set the engine to Active rather than Wait and they take their time to select commands--I wonder if they'll ever use Charm during boss battles since they're busy trying to survive + get rid of it.

I wonder if they're even going to do the sidequests +
Black Omen
...

There's just way to much negative Marle comments... I got to defend the princess like Glenn would want.
I always used Frog, I don't care if you guys say he sucks.
How can anyone not use Frog is beyond me.
He is a very good all around character. You just can't really do insane stuff with him. As an overall utility character, which are Marle/Robo/Frog, he would be #2. He is only beaten by Magus since Magus is fucking broken.

No characters are bad.

I think I always end up going with Team 1000 AD.

Next time I play, I may play differently.

1000AD is a very elemental multi-tech team. If you want to mix it up try a physical team like Brono/Brog/Byla. Brog is your utility healer and you get high party damage from standard attacks along with multi-techs. You can sub in Bobo for either Brog/Byla if you choose but I personally wouldn't. I only play Bobo with Bucca for team science. Brog is better and Byla is WAY better. But some people like the iron, IDK.

Always. ;)

Team ancestry is the shit. Bar-none the best synergy in the game.

Am I the only person who likes
ditching Crono entirely and making teams up of the other characters once that's possible? Also using the triple techs that require rocks? I know it isn't as strong a team but I find it fun to go without Crono.

Major plot spoilers (there are still people in this thread who haven't played the game, I guess):

Well, there's a lot you can try to do to use those teams to your advantage. You can totally try an Ayla/Magus/Marle team and have an easy go at it. I haven't tried a Robo/Lucca/Marle team before. I imagine that team would be harder just because all three have slower speed stats.

Without Crono, there's a lot of experimentation to be had when trying to configure your party to have adequate strength, speed and defense... especially when fighting Zeal, going through the Black Omen and fighting Lavos. Having Magus on your side would be ideal, though trying your hand at harder battles sans Magus (and even Ayla) might be more satisfying to the player after getting the most out of making the game more difficult. Again, this is a beauty of Chrono Trigger's flexibility for players: they can pick whomever they want to battle with... if they're veterans, they'd want to pick parties they're familiar with, or parties they want to experiment with; if they're newcomers, they can analyse each party member to see who brings whichever assets they deem appropriate for battle or suitable for the way they battle (ex: buffing/attacking, or brute strength, or elemental flexibility). There is never a "wrong" party to pick. Ever. Everyone brings a lot of great skills to the table.

I imagine that was Squaresoft's way of trying to enforce to the player that they lost a great asset when Crono died... not just plotwise, but gameplay-wise too. Giving the player access to Triple Tech rocks makes the journey a little easier; it encourages party synergy, or working together to make up for Crono's loss in terms of stats/brute force.

Whats the deal with them using different video hosting?

The happy fun ideology that launched Whiskey Media and GiantBomb is fading away a little as the reality of needing to money to keep the site running begins to creep in around the edges.

Offloading video content to Youtube for non-paying users undoubtedly reduces operating costs a fair amount. Subscribers who pay GiantBomb for premium content don't have to watch video through Youtube.

You keep a print copy of that spreadsheet in your front pocket, don't you?

My favorite team's Crono, Ayla and Marle, :)

Shit yeah, this is the best team hands down.

Falcon Hit is god tier. Can clean up lines of enemies easily. Cube Toss and Ice Sword 2 do massive, massive damage in areas. Marle has the best buff in the game (Haste) and two people have revive spells. Marle and Ayla can both heal, and have the best steal attack. AOE healing can be covered by Crono/Marle

Whats the deal with them using different video hosting?

Evilore has said avatars on GAF take up 8TB/month, so with that in mind the amount of data Giant Bomb goes through a month for their video content must be astounding. They simply could not justify the cost of that to non-pay users going forward - they hinted the move to YouTube saved $10,000 per month in a Whiskey Radio podcast, but never gave a accurate number. It was a needed change for the site to keep it alive. The cost to keep the wiki going to is probably massive to when you think about it.

I started a new run under certain criteria. Sort of a battle run to check out the system...once...again. ;)

Rules
  1. Skip dialog
  2. No cut-scenes
  3. Fight pretty much everything at least once
  4. No grinding

Current Status
  • 2:35
  • 3 Power Tabs to Crono
  • Location - End of Time (back from the future)
  • No deaths
  • 6:1 guilty fail at trial since it increases play-through speed
  • Got all three wins at house of horrors (135 silver points)

Tips for this section
  • Eating the guy's lunch at the fair is a good way to fight Gato without stopping
  • Fire whirl is the best dual tech for the first few hours, try to get two enemies at first, then three later
  • Wind slash is the best single tech
  • Healing is rarely required if the run is done properly
  • Prioritize speed for accessories e.g. speed belt for Crono

Party Switches
2:08 (Crono, Marle, Robo)
2:35 (Crono, Marle, Lucca)

  • Location - 65m BC (after tyrano lair)
  • No deaths

Tips for this section
  • Marle becomes godlike @ level 17 if she learns haste, plus find silver stud @ Denadoro Mountains for 50% MP off, cure1 does 100% heal per character with a few tabs as well
  • Cr/Fr/Mar team is great using ice water plus direct damage with Cr
