Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Part 27

And I do have a question.

Reading all these build tips has me wondering. How do you build effective characters and teams in CT? Is it really stuffing certain characters with all sorts of tabs, proper leveling, or is it something else?

Some people here are overthinking the "builds". The game is flexible enough that you can use any members and they will work fine in the group. I pretty much used Chrono/Marle/Lucca through most of my playthrough unless the story restricts me. I tried out other members during NG+ and they work as well.

As for tabs, I used to just give all Power Tabs to Chrono and all Magic tabs to Marle. Worked out for me.

After watching this, I forgot how much I loved this dungeon music.

It's a combination of things. But basically because of CT's use of dual/triple tech, it is about synergy, then equipment, build type, and tabbing. Leveling is not a focus.

Why? Some people play CT multiple times, I've lost count. Do you expect people to really not put thought into making fun and proper builds?

Okay. All you guys who are getting onto them about not reading the text are seriously going to have an aneurism today. Take your blood pressure medicine before you watch.

It's really bad. Reeeeeally bad.

At this point they're just trolling, so it doesn't bug me any more.

I thought they did fine against Giga Gaia, some of you need to relax.

What is considered proper? People could play it any way they like and it works out. It's all preference, imo. I'm referring to earlier posts where people posted that only a certain combo is the "best."

At the very least they should put the Gold Stud on Brono. It doesn't make any sense that they don't have the MP-saving accessory on the one dude that is using all the MP.

I love it when they get their arses handed back to them.

That was hilarious, they're losing to one of the easiest enemies in that dungeon. I can't wait until they start getting deeper in and finally reach the end boss. That just might bring Ryan and Patrick to tears.

Proper would be efficiency in my book. I personally am going to make the best build I can with my team in an RPG. Isn't that common practice? Now, the level of thought put in can vary of course. Like slap on some shit that sounds good and go. But when you play a game a lot, you mix things up and find what works better. So you end up with an efficient build, which I would call properly put together.

Yea, there was a ton of what works "best" posts. I was posting about broken builds earlier but I try to never recommend anything. Unless we are talking about tips. But I don't think it is out of the question to think through the builds you make. Truthfully though, I am someone who always looks to break everything I play.

It's not even the fact that they aren't reading the hints. They find a tech that does good damage in one instance and then assume it will do the same for everything else. Relying on Lightning 2 as their go-to spell is simply retarded. I don't play RPG that way and I certainly hope most people don't either.

Regardless, the bottom line is MP conservation should be important. However, they do not understand that concept so there really isn't any point to get work up about it now.

Have to admit, I laughed my ass off at them dying on the blue and red Scouts. Still, it's pretty god damn incredible that:
1. They don't seem to grasp the colour coding. Yellow scout gets hit by lightning, kills them in 1 hit, yet they never wonder if casting water on the blue scout would be a good idea.
2. They don't grasp the colour coding even when the text is telling them quite clearly to only cast a certain type of magic.

Ooh well. Hopefully they'll make it to the Mammon machine tomorrow.

oh ok, I see your point.

After watching this episode, am I the only one who actually wonders about their ability to review games if that's how they play them?

(Not sure if serious)

Hell no, the endurance run is all about messing around and having fun. I'm glad they're not playing it super seriously with the best builds and whatnot, it's much more fun to watch that way. Obviously they take their day job far more seriously.

After watching this episode, am I the only one who actually wonders about their ability to review games if that's how they play them?
Not really. Reviewers are generally shit at games and guess what, so is the majority of the gaming public. In a way watching other people play games like this makes it clear to me why virtually every game today is made with idiots in mind. You want to know why Fi in Skyward Sword constantly bugs your ass to remind you of the obvious? Here's exactly why. People either don't pay attention, can't be arsed to use their brain whilst gaming or are too dumb to figure out the obvious. I think Ryan even said it in one of the ER episodes. Games of today have made him lazy, because these days its barely a requirement to pay attention to the in game text.

I really would love it see a panel of 10-25 gamers. around 10-16 years of age, who only grew up with this generation's games, sit down and play some SNES or PS1/N64 games. I would love to see how much difficulty they would have playing these games when they aren't led by the hand all the way to the end. I'm all the more grateful for the Demon's Souls and Dark Souls of this world, who demand the player to pay full attention and reward the player accordingly with a real sense of accomplishment.

Catching up and saw ep 25. I called it at them dying at that boss. I just knew the way they've been playing would not be up to snuff for Giga. Also lightning 2, please stop spamming it but whatever. This ER is still enjoyable.

I've got Chrono Trigger DS coming in the mail today. I know nothing about it, have never played a Final Fantasy game but I have played and love Super Mario RPG. I have been in the mood for a fun traditional RPG with magic and cool weapons and upgrades and a cool story. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and try to play all the major classic games so that's the main reason I decided to grab this game.

What can I expect?

A grand adventure if you can avoid major spoilers.

Are they at the Ocean Palace now?! That's my other favourite part of the game. :O

But not really... I personally love tinkering with every single battle system I come across and exhausting it so much that I know the advantages and disadvantages of certain party members. That's why team builds that increase efficiency are important to me, but also team builds that make the game more difficult to me are just as important.

You're right in saying that any team works no matter your playstyle, but there are certainly more efficient party builds out there.

You're kidding... Mmm...

Trying to grasp how one dies at those enemies, but that sounds hilarious.

Yep! Totally agreed with all of this. I've played Chrono Trigger a lot so mixing up the playstyle to go with harder teams or more efficient teams every now and then make ATB 2.0 really damn fun to play with again and again.

One perfect Hiroyuki Ito-designed battle system in ATB 2.0 (the other perfect one is ATB Kai/Dresspheres). Play with it a little bit, you'll have lots of fun if you do.

Nice responses :)

Does this game have magic? Like, can I cast a fireball or magic missile or something with one of my characters?

And does it have those timed hits like in Mario RPG/Paper Mario?

Basically it's just the result of Ryan spamming full-screen attacks against low-level enemies like he normally does, except this time the low-level enemies have immunity and a counter-spell and by the time he realizes it he's already cast three all-enemy attacks which results in death across the board. The fun part is that he does it twice.

It's absolutely hilarious to watch.

I'm very interested to see what happens when they get to
Magus
and if they choose to swap out either Frog or Robo at that point. My final team is usually Crono and
Magus
along with either Frog or Marle. Robo is so slow, I never am able to use him in any capacity once I don't have to.

Well, he never realizes it. Late in the episode it looks like they've started piecing it together (which is bad enough since the game is telling them what's happening) but we'll see how long that sticks. I think they'll just keep using only physical attacks against the red and blue ones.

I actually just finished the DS version with Crono-Marle-Robo. Stealing speed tabs makes everything easier and Marle-Robo have that great heal all Double Tech.

Honestly any character build works in this game, but for specific areas like THE ONE THEY'RE AT RIGHT NOW I purposely swapped in Lucca for fire. I also hoarded all the tabs as a kid until the end side quests and then split them between Crono/Magus. With Magus in the party you really have no issue with elemental stuff. Actually I can't even imagine anyone not playing the game with Crono+Magus+Healer..it's..just not...fathomable..

This is the only area of the game that is keenly locked on using a team. In this case team 1000AD. No other area is it a big deal unless you for some reason don't have any lightning for the future, for dinos, etc... But even that is manageable.

Not using Magus is easy because he is friggin broken.

Oy, I had to skip a bit after seeing them die twice. It definitely is frustrating seeing the text clearly flash across the screen while they seem to pay no attention to it at all, like it's not there.

Except for the cutscene the first time, this episode was pretty much skippable.

I'm glad I don't treat it like a media event, I generally put ER's up on my second screen while I'm doing something.

I don't normally give them shit for playing poorly, but that wasn't poor play. The game was giving them the answer right there on the screen and they ignored it. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fuccccccccccccccccccccccck

So I finally watched this episode because I wanted to hear a reaction to the awesome Undersea Palace music and...

Oh my God... I had to turn it off after the second death because it was just ridiculous.

*game telling them the Scouts' weaknesses*
"What just happened?"
"I don't know!"

"Don't use magic! Use physical attacks instead!"

What about FFIVDS? I'd say together they make the ATB trinity.
Absolutely. Augments are probably the best thing that ever happened to that game, and definitely made the system far more enjoyable than it originally was. Though I played it without a FAQ, so I guess people who used external references probably found it easier. I just really dislike the look of that game, but the gameplay is pretty solid.

I also like ADB, but that mostly goes for the IZJS version of FFXII.

Ah, don't worry about the speed tabs argument, but you know that I totally agree with you. By the time he finishes playing catch up, the other guys are even more efficient. I just like using vanilla Robo to make the game harder. Excluding Magus from a team also makes the game feel more balanced since both he and Ayla are powerhouses in their respective strengths (magic and physical respectively). Crono has a lot of speed (which is why I wonder Ryan and Patrick have the speed belt on him rather than Robo).

And yes--Ocean Palace is where Team 1000 AD truly shines, especially with Delta Attack. I'm a little surprised that they haven't gotten Luminaire at this point. I had that spell the first time that I had ever played through Ocean Palace and it made the place a piece of cake along with Delta Attack. You need all three elements to get through the place quickly and efficiently.

Heh, I wonder what they're going to do for the next segment of the game when they don't have
a certain character
along for the ride to start spamming physical attacks like they seem to have been doing this dungeon.

Haha. I stopped watching roughly 15 episodes ago. It's kind of amazing, I mean, reading this thread and seeing people react to their play style exactly the same as a few weeks ago. Have they actually learnt anything?

At this point in the game. They're sticking with Robo and Frog for life. Even if they did switch for Ayla, Lucca or Marle. Their tech skills would be so far behind. If they get Magus, they wouldn't use him sadly.

GB fans vote en masse for new ER.

They get their ER along with a massive dose of trolling because I don't think anyone at GB was really that enthusiastic about doing another one. I'm positive that's what's going on.

They NEVER read text during battle. I'd assume it's because their TV is horrible, but they can read everything else just fine.

Well, Ryan is really open to criticism and suggestion, so go tell him on twitter and... BLOCKED.

Yes, some fans are stupid and obnoxious, but some offer legitimate help and criticism, and some members of GB take it all the same, with scorn.

Remember how Vinny and Jeff were thankful and receptive to comments made during Persona 4 even after some jerks kept whining about their playing, and then spoiling the game for jeff?

(that said, I have no idea how i would react after years of people commenting and criticizing my work.)

I think the main problem with this endurance run is that it's been pre-recorded too much. No point in leaving any useful comments or tips because they probably have finished the game already.

There were a few episodes in the past endurance runs where you could tell they recorded a couple of episodes together but this one and Ryan not reading anything is terrible.

This doesn't really have to do with the endurance run but does anyone else think the sealed chests look like a face with a mustache

perhaps a beaver

Aren't they not reading the comments sections on purpose?

And what do you suggest they do with the huge holiday break and GOTY awards and the like?
